Ranking Problem (my most important Q so far on here)
-
Hi,
I have a keyword which is location specific and without any work doing to it, it ranked page 4 position 7.
I did 4 guest posts all in one go and the it moved to page 3 position 5, I then left it for a week (position didn't move) and did another guest post a day after the guest post had been indexed I lost rankings and moved back to page 4, position 4.
Has anyone got an idea why this happened? Is it a case its just fluxing and I could see in a few days it come back to page 3 position 2 or do you think I got an initial boost because the guest posts all went up and its just a fluke that it dropped when the 5th one went up?
This is a big deal for me because I rely on guest posting a lot, I've even got a copy writer pumping out 500 quids worth of content a month just for guest blogging.
I need to understand what is happening, this is one of the most important questions so far on here so I would appreciate some talk on the matter.
-
I mentioned the copy writer because guest blogging is a big part of what I do and have seen good rankings from it for other keywords.
The keyword in question is connected to a brand new page with only 4 guest posts going to it so your answer helped me understand that flux will happen but if I carry on I should move up but carry on fluxing to the point where I will stabilise over time.
The money spent on guest blogging is spread out across multiple keywords, a small amount is being used for this new page.
But because I do so much of it, I need to understand as much as possible about guest blogging, thus spawning this thread.

Can you provide more details of the your site and the keyword your targeting?
If you're spending lots of money on blog posts and still lurking down on Page 3/4 then I'd be worried that you're not getting the return on investment. Are you getting ANY traffic to this keyword?
If you don't want to post the info here, then feel free to drop me a private message.

Thanks.
The page 1 results seem to never move really maybe a few swaps over a month but the top 5 are pretty much concreted in.
After page 2, targeting of the term dilutes, maybe 4/10 don't use the exact term in the title tag.
I guess the guest posts I put on the blogs would have been on the homepage of these sites for about a week until new guest posts pushed mine off the homepage and into the achieve.

I wouldn't worry too much. You really want to look at the ongoing trends rather than just one weeks results. I've got certain keywords I'm tracking where I seem to swap position with my SERP neighbour every week!
If you see a trend where your slipping down the SERPS week after week then I'd start investigating why.
Remember the pages you're creating don't exist in a vacuum on the net and there are lots of factors affecting your ranking. What are the other sites in the SERPS for you keywork doing?
Blog posts may rank higher when they're new. Google has a freshness factor that it'll use when ranking so you can often see news worthy content slowly drifting down the SERPS over time.
As you build an authentic, diverse link profile I would expect to see more stability.
Hope this helps.

Within the Q&A forum, is it spam to include a website in our signature?
Hello Mozzers! I've seen several contributors that end their questions and responses with a website. Just for the sake of the argument, this is an example: -- Some text about the response/question --- Hope I've helped. Gaston Riera www.domain-Gaston-company.com To clarify more, the URL does never have a link. I've always considered that this is a place to share and help other by ours/others expertise not to self promote implicitly our company.

So, my question is related to the rules and best practices in the forum: Is it spam to include a website in the signature of a message? Does Moz's community staff take some action about those? Thanks!

A Sudden Drop in Keyword Ranking but why?
Hi, I wondered if anyone has ever experienced anything like this before, one of our customers has a website JDB Events (http://www.jdb-events.com/). When he first came to us he was using Fast Hosts and he was experiencing down time pretty much every day in periods of up to an hour. The first step before carrying out any SEO was to place the website on our VPS so that the downtime issue was resolved. It did resolve the issue and the speed of the website was also increased. My next issue was to address the length of the Title on the home page because it was 157 characters, I usually keep these to 70 characters. This is the old Meta Title: JDB Events Limited - Event, Production & AV Hire Specialists | The West Midlands Dance Floor Hire, LED Furniture, DJ, Disco Hire & Event Services Specialists Here is the my new Meta Title: JDB Events | LED Furniture Hire for Parties and Corporate Events I have attached a screenshot of the drop that I have experienced, would anyone recommend that it's ok to keep the title longer so that I can cram more search terms into it, I use Woo Rank as a bench mark and this recommends shortening the title but I would be interested in hearing anyone's views. Other steps that I have taken: Shortened the home page description WWW Resolve Added Robots.txt Crawled all of the pages for 404 errors etc The next step I'm thinking of taking is replacing the amended meta title and description for the old one and monitoring that, other than that I can't see why I have taken such a hit. Has anyone found a best practice for ranking a client who has one central office location, but a large, regional service area that they want to rank for?
All the most recent local search ranking is based upon physical addresses, but what happens when someone provides services and has staff 100 miles from that central office location, but no physical address to work with?

My satellite website is ranking better than my actual site. Why and what to do?
This is our website: www.sauspiel.de and this is the satellite website. As the satellite site has a better ranking for the keyword "schafkopf" since two or three weeks we wonder how this could happen and what would be best to change it or improve the situation. Shall we take down the satellite site, redirect to the "real" site or try to downgrade? And what would you consider to be the (strongest) reason? Any suggestions? Thanks a lot for your help and assessment!

Local vs Global Search Results Yield Very Different Rankings Lately
When I monitor my website's rankings, I always do it from Canada (direct connection) and from the USA (using a VPN in Arizona). I've been monitoring rankings this way for the last 3 years. Most of the time, I got similar results (-5 / +5) from both location. My website is a ".com" and targets an international audience. Lately (is it since Panda 22?), I've seen dramatic differences in rankings from both locations. Some keywords will rank in the top 10 on Google.com (from the USA) while they will appear on page 3, 4, 5 and even lower on Google.ca (from Canada). The thing is, the top 10 results on Google.ca are not even from canadian websites. Fact of the matter, there are even some results from India websites (.in) in the top 10! I understand that Google.ca will give advantage to websites from Canada (or targeting the canadian market / .ca domain name) over international / US websites but there's never been such a huge difference in rankings until lately. Has anybody else experienced this? What are your thoughts?
