Should I put a No follow on each link in a Javascript dropdown menu?
-
I have a javascript dropdown menu on every page of my site. It lists all the wineries I write about and sell. About 300 links. I've been told that google doesn't like so many links on a page, but that it doesn't spider javascrpt. Then I hear that it does.
Am I being penalized by all the links? Or does the spider really not see them?
I don't want to give up my javascript menus, unless I have to. Should I put a no follow on each link inside the code?
And on the other hand, am I losing google juice by not letting it see all the pages on my site that I link to in the javascript menu?
Thanks in advance for your help!

No worries... you can give me a thumbs up and a "this answered my question" if you like... I want that SEOmoz t-shirt lol.

Thank you very much. You've been very generous with your knowledge. It is most appreciated. Now it's time to get on to the coding!

Yeah you can do that with the search listings page, but make sure that's not the only links in to the content that you do want spidered. Alternatively if you do go with the CSS menu then you'd need to reduce the number of links by linking to the categories first, then from the categories to the pages. It's not ideal as the architecture wouldn't be as flat but it would still be better then having too many links I think.
Have a look at www.martinco.com as one example of how you could do the stuff with the search listings. The search listings page returns results as queries and that page is noindex, nofollow... but at the bottom of the page there are also links to different regions which then go on to link to the offices within those regions. That was done as a solution for the same problems you're having... plus of course you will need to make sure you get lots of in-content text links from relevant pages to the pages you want indexed where you can.

I sell wine from Oregon, so I'm thinking of dividing the wineries up into regions/AVAs, one AVA on each page.
I'm afraid people might have a hard time finding the winery they are looking for, so maybe I should supplement the regional pages with a "search" page listing all the wineries with links, maybe putting a no follow on that page, figuring that I don't care if that page is spidered.
Good ideas or not so good?
I know how to do a css menu that looks the same as my javascript pulldown, but aren't I going to run into the same problem with too many links on the page?

Hehe, I think you might be right
Try "Smashing Magazine" for CSS menus, or there's "CSSplay.co.uk" but they charge

Thanks so much you are very helpful.
I've had the same pull down menus on my site since 1998! I guess it's time to try something new.

You should definitely just give up the Javascript menu, if the reason you don't want to is due to design, etc... then look into CSS as an alternative, you'll find you can probably replicate the current Javascript nav to appear exactly the same with CSS instead.
With regards to the nofollows, it depends... do you want those pages to get indexed and gain any position in the SERP's? For long-tail terms perhaps? If so then you don't want to nofollow them.
Can you not break them down somehow into better categories, because what you have heard is correct... that is too many links on a page.
Look at "siloing" I only recently came across siloing myself and asked about it on here, where I was referred to this article http://www.seomoz.org/blog/site-architecture-for-seo

Should links on a family bar be no follows?
I have a network of sites that we use a family bar for to get the user to where they want to go but as I am looking at my link profile, i keep on seeing these links everywhere. (DUH, of course) Question is, should these links be no follow? Could these links hurt me?

Need suggestion: Should the user profile link be disallowed in robots.txt
I maintain a myBB based forum here. The user profile links look something like this http://www.learnqtp.com/forums/User-Ankur Now in my GWT, I can see many 404 errors for user profile links. This is primarily because we have tight control over spam and auto-profiles generated by bots. Either our moderators or our spam control software delete such spammy member profiles on a periodic basis but by then Google indexes those profiles. I am wondering, would it be a good idea to disallow User profiles links using robots.txt? Something like Disallow: /forums/User-*

Too many on page links
Hello, I have a page that isn't ranking very well. http://nicontrols.com/uk/drives-motors/variable-speed-drives According to the MOZ research tools I have too many on page links. I believe most of these are a result of the advanced filtration options on the left hand side of the page. I don't want to remove the filters as they are extremely useful for customers but I am also worried about the number of links Anyone get any ideas about the number of links? Should I care?

Too many links on home page
SEOmoz crawl states I have 3 pages with too many links. My sites are hosted on Yahoo small business. One page they state is too long is the home page/ind. with 600 links to each page on the web site ( I think). Is this really a problem and how do I fix it? The other two pages are product categories that link to the products under the main product type. What I do not understand is that we have many larger product categories that SEOmoz crawl is not stating too many.

Are there to many internal links here?
This is our main Motorcycle Parts page. In my opinion there are to many links on this page. They have put links to all the top brands after products. Do you think having all these links could be hurting our rankings/ ability for google to crawl the site efficiently? The links are good for navigation, I just think there are way to many there like over 200. Here is the page you can see what i am talking about http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/s/49/61/Motorcycle-Parts

Followed seomoz advice for on page tweaks but dropped
Hi all We followed seomoz advice regarding on-page tweaks for this page: http://www.compactlaw.co.uk/agency-agreement.html Dropped 10 places by Google UK. Obviously could be a coincidence, but any on-page critique very gladly received. (But also seem to have been dropped by Google across the board in the past week or so. Usual trouble of trying to find causes. But specific page advice would be a start and much appreciated.) Regards P

Should I include my help desk link?
My website has a link to our help desk. I was considering a 'do not follow' since I don't think it should be included. However, are there any benefits to including it since there are A LOT of articles and pages on our help desk (though it's aimed at our curent customers, not new or potential customers)?

If I have too many on-page links can I reduce it with nofollow tags or do the links have to be removed?
On my site I have a top nav drop down menu but once visitors go to one particularly large subsection, that menu is repeated on the left for easier viewing. As a result, I shoot over 100 links on page. Can I put nofollow or noindex tags on the left side links and reduce my "official" on-page links count or do I have to actually eliminate some of the links? Thanks, Oak
