Over-optimized title tags and location
-
Hi,
Question 1) I have gotten in the habit of putting e.g. Pizzas Birmingham, Pizzas Coventry, Brand name, for pizza outlets that straddle 2 towns / cities (which is often the case) - in title tags.
I tried, for example, Pizzas, Birmingham & Coventry, Brand Name - and it didn't work as well.
PS The Brand Name includes the word Pizzeria, not Pizzas.
Both towns / cities will be key markets when I use the above format.
But could this be seen as an over-optimization I'm thinking?
Question 2) In one of my title tags, I have Pizzerias, Restaurants, City, Brand name
which is working well, but that's 4 elements - is that too many? Is that an over optimization signal?
Thanks in advance for your help

Thanks Anthony - that's very helpful feedback - I'll have a go with those formats and see how it goes. I have quite a few pages to play with so I'm gonna test, test, and test again...

Hi Luke,
I don't believe that this would be considered over optimization but there's probably a better solution for your titles for a couple of reasons.
- Google places more relevance on keywords closer to the beginning of the Meta Title, so you'll want to keep that in mind. Also do a little keyword research. I would think that Pizza would be searched more than Pizzas or Pizzerias. If I were searching for a Pizza place I'd search simply for Pizza in Birmingham, or Pizza Restaurant in Birmingham.
I'd recommend XXXX Pizzeria | Pizza Restaurant in Birmingham AL and Coventry AL
XXXX = Brand Name
- If a user is signed in to a Google account, or Google recognizes the location of the user's IP, it will usually automatically display listings relevant to that location, which is why I recommended putting those near the end. Using your Meta Descriptions to help users know that the location is near them.
"XXXX Pizzeria is conveniently located near Birmingham and Coventry at 1234 Whatever St, Birmingham, AL. Delivery, Carryout, and Dine In available... so on and so on.
- For local businesses, Google Places results usually display before actual websites, so do your best to optimize your local listing by completely filling out the profile and by linking to the Google Places listing from your actual website.
Hope this helps.
Thanks!
Anthony

Domain and Sub-Domain Question
Hi, My company owns the domains www.NYSTATEMLS.COM and www.MYSTATEMLS.COM both of these sites are already on there way with a lot going on. I did just review video 5 on technical SEO and Rand was talking about how much harder it is to rank two websites. So i'm wondering what could be done in this area? Should something be done? The website nystatemls.com is necessary because it's dedicated to the state of new york & has been around for a long time. mystatemls.com came later because the business grew and we opened up to the national market. Looking for some insight. Thanks so much, Chris Farcher

Internal linking: Global Nav Bar obscuring link authority?
I was watching Rand's whiteboard on how links in the headers/footers can impact SEO: moz.com/blog/links-headers-footers-navigation-impact-seo If I understood correctly: 1) Google will use the first link in the html that it sees for a given page. Additional links will not be considered for passing weight. 2) Text links in body (carry more weight than) > image links > nav links > footer links If we want to use a global nav bar, is there a simple solution for not obscuring the links in the body content? (It seems very awkward to load the header nav last (and bring it up via css after the page loads), and this also goes against Google wanting people to load above-the-fold content quickly.) If I internally link to a page that was not important enough to get a spot in the global nav, but I include this link in the body as a text link (for example, an accessory specific to that item), is this internal link really getting more weight in Google's eyes because it wasn't in the nav? This seems strange to me. Thanks!

Affiliate links with hash tags
We are setting up a brand new internal affiliate program for our site. When creating the affiliate URLs I learned that we can use hash tags (#) instead of question marks (?). I remember Rand did a White Board Friday years ago (http://www.seomoz.org/blog/whiteboard-friday-using-the-hash) saying that this was a better way to build affiliate URLs because it basically acts as a stop and/or canonical for the URL. We already have canonical tags but I was thinking of using this in hopes of getting a little extra juice from the affiliate links. Questions: Does Google still treat hash tags the same as they did 3-4 years ago? Does anyone see using hash tags as worse than something else, like a question mark? Thanks!
