What is the best way to consolidate two websites into one?
-
Someone within our company's IT department just sent me some SEO advice that I believe is bogus. Can someone let me know if my initial gut-check is correct?
We have two websites selling two identical catalogs of products but branded differently (color scheme, wording, etc.) like this:
We want to shut down the second website.
I think we should set up 301 redirects from all pages on the second site to corresponding (relevant) pages on the first. In theory, this would pass over 90% of the earned link juice from one to the other.
Here is what my IT peer said:
"We could keep www.two.com set up indefinitely and just have it as the same web site as www.one.com (so two URLs but one site). This would help alleviate any issues with search engine results, etc. (Although I believe Ryan would agree this does impact www.one.com's rankings a bit, but shouldn't be a problem as long as we don't advertise both.) Google doesn't know they are on the same site, so you could technically get away with it. And it helps in indexing multiple pages on our sites."
... but wouldn't this be a big no-no because of the massive amounts of duplicate content it would create?

Hey Ryan
Just finally getting to this, thanks for reaching out on Twitter and asking for my input. It seems like everyone here has already helped you out, and I do agree
Only thing I'd add, is remember 301 redirects are not only for engines but for the users so always be sure they make sense from a UX point of view.
And also, be sure this doesn't create a chain of redirects. If 301s were already in place on the site you're redirecting from, always try to redirect from the original source, like this;
DO THIS:
www.one.com/original-page.html ----> www.two.com/real-page/
www.one.com/new-same-as-original/ ----> www.two.com/real-page/
NOT THIS:
www.one.com/original-page.html ---> www.one.com/new-same-as-original/ ----> www.two.com/real-page/
Communicate this to IT as best as you can, as its been said by Cutts to avoid chains of 301s if possible.
Hope this all helps, let us know!

Thanks, Keri! Yeah... sometimes I think SEO needs to be a certification for IT folks...
-
Wow, that reminds me of the time developers told me Matt Cutts was wrong, that I should not redirect non-www to www, that any redirects were bad for search engines, and the more pages in the search engine the better, and wondered why my real issue with my support request was.
I'd push for the 301s, and I'm also interested to hear what others have to say.
-
Thanks for the validation, Highland. I'm hoping others will chime in, too!

I agree with you. Keeping a second site with duplicate content makes no sense. Just 301 two.com to one.com (preserving URLs like two.com/widgets redirects to one.com/widgets) and you should have no problems.
Advertising has nothing to do with indexation. Google actively looks for domains (they are a registrar after all) and spiders them unless you explicitly tell them not to (i.e. robots.txt)

Local business with two separate websites...what to do?
Hey Mozzers! I have a client that I'm helping with some online ad campaigns for lead generation, but they recently had an SEO issue pop up I'm looking into for them. For whatever reason, they have 2 websites. Those are: http://www.healthsourceofroyalpalmbeach.com/ (newer site) http://www.healthsourcedecompression.com/ (older site) Their local listing is connected to the older site (above) and that's where they have all of their reviews. I know the BEST solution is probably to nix one of the sites and setup proper redirects, but how can they keep BOTH sites without damaging their SEO efforts? Currently, BOTH sites rank on page one for their primary kw target "chiropractors royal palm beach fl" Appreciate the help! Ricky

Consolidate Local sites to one larger site
I am a partner in a real estate company that operates in 10 different markets across the country. Each of these markets has it's own individual domain. My question is should we consolidate each of these markets into one domain that services all markets? What would we possibly gain or lose from an organic traffic standpoint? In some of our more established markets (Indianapolis, Las Vegas, Tampa, Orlando and Charlotte) our organic traffic accounts for 50-60% of our total traffic. In some of our newer markets (Denver, Phoenix, San Diego) it accounts for less than 15%. We do operate under two different brand names. EasyStreet Realty and Highgarden Real Estate. EasyStreet has been around since 2000 with most of our Highgarden sites only up for 6-24 months. Another question is we are considering converting all EasyStreet divisions to Highgarden. I am a little reluctant to do so, since most of our organic traffic is coming from our EasyStreet sites. Thoughts? You can find links to all our sites at www.easystreetrealty.com or www.highgarden.com Thank you in advance for your insight.

Merging two existing company sites into one
Hi Moz community, I have recently started a new job for a Fire & Security company in the UK to help with their non existent SEO efforts. Currently they have two separate websites. One of the websites is for their services and the other website is for their eCommerce store selling fire alarm equipment etc. The eCommerce store is higher up in the SERPs and overall has a lot more links. It also uses a better branded domain name. As I have never attempted such a project I have a few questions. The current eCommerce store is hosted and maintained by another web company which uses their bespoke CMS. What I want to do is take the service website and merge it with the ecommerce domain, however the service site runs on wordpress, which I want to continue for its flexibility. The service page wants to be the new homepage with a link on it to go to the store. I just cant get my head around the whole operation so if anyone could give me some advice to point me in the right direction that would be great. Thanks

Best way to transfer pagerank from one site to another
We currently own two sites (with unique domains) that accomplish a similar goal, but are completely different (so there's no duplicate content, etc) and were developed independently. Both sites have very good pagerank due to great press and inbound links over several years. Also both have thousands of pages and get a lot of inbound deep links. We plan on shutting one of the sites down so we can focus on the other. We'd like to transfer as much traffic and SEO/pagerank value from the one we're shutting down to the one we're continuing to focus on. What's the best way to do that? Should we just do a 301 redirect? Or keep the site running in some diminished form and link it to the site we're focusing on? I saw SEOmoz has a good guide on moving sites http://www.seomoz.org/learn-seo/redirection which recommends a 301 redirect, but I wanted to see if the same applies when merging sites as we are in this case.

Safest way to launch a redesign
Hey MozFolk, I was wondering what the best and SAFEST way to handle this situation is; I am doing a redesign of our current website, but the new site will have different content. Should we just forward the entire root domain in the HT Access file? Or redirect each and every URL using a 301? I know these, terms but never actually done it myself, and cannot risk losing the SEO weight of this website. How do I handle a group of pages that they don't want to continue to use also? Do I just leave those URLs be, or do I forward all of them to one new page (or homepage) on the new site? Please help me look like a rockstar and save the ship from sinking itself!

Best website structure for product benefits and features.
I'm in disagreement with my partner over how best to represent our products' benefits and features on the homepage of our website. I'm interested in this from primarily a SEO perspective but it obviously has an impact on conversions as well. I believe that a homepage shouldn't contain too much information so as not to overwhelm the user, a brief sentence or two about each benefit with a link to another page with in depth info about the related feature. Each of these inner pages would be optimized and contain much more content that you could put on the homepage example below. Each Please see wireframe A He believes in more information on the homepage. There is more content to index which he believes is important for the homepage. Also, by using tabs most of the content is hidden from initial view so its doesn't clutter the page and the user doesn't have to leave the page to decide whether he is interested in the software. Please see wireframe B below. I'd really love to hear from other Moz'ers which they would choose and why?
