Significance of SEOmoz`s keyword difficulty
-
Hello everybody,
currently, I am working on a project that will be available in multiple languages. My problem concerns the difference of the German and English language in relation to the SEOmoz`s Keyword difficulty (KWD).
I just finished my German keyword research and got a satisfying collection of keywords I can use according to the KWD, page/ domain authority, Backlinks and Onpage-check.
Now, as I am doing my research for the English market I find it hard to find any appropriate keywords with a satisfying KWD.
I imagined the ranking on the English market to be much harder but now I doubt to ever rank for any useful, effective keyword on my list, because most of them are over 70 (some important over 80). According to the research it seems to have something to do with the authority strength of the pages, trust, etc, because they do not have more backlinks. Since they are query independent it is very hard for me to get a feeling for those metrics (I am new at SEO).
So here are my questions:
Due to your experiences, is it even possible to derank such pages or should I simply save the effort?
How significant is the SEOmoz`s KWD?
Would you always do Onpage optimization (text, internal linking) in case you earn more trust, authority, etc in the future, just to have your site optimized on the best keyword possible, even though you know that you cannot rank for that keyword (Cue: User-experience)? Or would you switch to less significant words (e.g. flashcards -> index cards) where you have a chance to rank but which is not that effective with traffic? Or focus on longtail, if possible?
Many thanks

Thank you Stubby, much appreciated!

As I have watched you respond numerous times, I once again am impressed with your awesomeness.
You should change your avatar to have a bright light shining around your head or something...
Hopefully this does not come off as sarcastic, it is intended to be actual praise, and lighthearted

Everyone has their own philosophy on this. Here is what I use... (this is for an information site, but same philosophy could be used for informative content on a retail site)
I do not fear competition, because where there is competition there is usually a lot of money changing hands. Also where there is competition there is usually a lot of search volume. So, I attack the high volume keywords with high quality substantive content. High quality content will be shared, liked and linked - and that will help your rankings. Substantive content (meaning long copy covering all details of the subject) will attract long tail traffic because it will contain a diversity of keywords.
I do use the SEOmoz KWD tool, however, my way of gauging the competition is to go out in the the SERPs and see what content I will be competing against. If I can beat their content then I am going to attack. KWD makes no difference.
If you have great content that beats the competition don't hesitate to go after those difficult keywords. A year after your content goes up you might be surprised at where your page is ranking. Then you will say that you are glad that you were not a chicken.

Comparing New vs. Old Keyword Difficulty Scores
We've had a few questions regarding the new Keyword Difficulty score used in Keyword Explorer, and how it compares to the old score in our stand-alone Keyword Difficulty tool. Specifically, people want to know why some scores are much lower using the new tool. There a general discussion of the math behind the tool in this post: Keyword Research in 2016: Going Beyond Guesswork One of the problems we had with the original Keyword Difficulty score is that, because it's based on our Page Authority (PA) score and PA tends toward the middle of the 0-100 range, Difficulty got a bit bunched up. A Difficulty score in the low-to-mid 20s (via the old tool) is actually very low. So, we set out to re-scale the new tool to broaden that score and use more of the 0-100 range. We hoped this would allow more granularity and better comparisons. While the logic is sound, we're concerned that we may have been too aggressive in this re-scaling, given recent feedback. So, we're going to be analyzing a large set of keywords (anonymously, of course) that people have run through the tool to see if too many Difficulty scores seem too low. If they do, we'll make some adjustments to the math. In the meantime, please be aware that low scores may appear lower in the new tool and very high scores may appear higher. We wanted to address some of the limitations in V1 and feedback over the years, and so the old and new scores really can't be compared directly in a meaningful way. We're sorry for any confusion that has caused, and we will re-evaluate if necessary.

Functionality of SEOmoz crawl page reports
I am trying to find a way to ask SEOmoz staff to answer this question because I think it is a functionality question so I checked SEOmoz pro resources. I also have had no responses in the Forum too it either. So here it is again. Thanks much for your consideration! Is it possible to configure the SEOMoz Rogerbot error-finding bot (that make the crawl diagnostic reports) to obey the instructions in the individual page headers and http://client.com/robots.txt file? For example, there is a page at http://truthbook.com/quotes/index.cfm month=5&day=14&year=2007 that has – in the header -

<meta name="robots" content="noindex"> </meta name="robots" content="noindex"> This page is themed Quote of the Day page and is duplicated twice intentionally at http://truthbook.com/quotes/index.cfm?month=5&day=14&year=2004 and also at http://truthbook.com/quotes/index.cfm?month=5&day=14&year=2010 but they all have <meta name="robots" content="noindex"> in them. So Google should not see them as duplicates right. Google does not in Webmaster Tools.</meta name="robots" content="noindex"> So it should not be counted 3 times? But it seems to be? How do we gen a report of the actual pages shown in the report as dups so we can check? We do not believe Google sees it as a duplicate page but Roger appears too. Similarly, one can use http://truthbook.com/contemplative_prayer/ , here also the http://truthbook.com/robots.txt tells Google to stay clear. Yet we are showing thousands of dup. page content errors when Google Webmaster tools as shown only a few hundred configured as described. Anyone? Jim0 -

On Page URL's not updating?
I recently moved my site to Shopify which completely changed the URL structure. I went to my old pages and created permanent 301 redirects to my new pages on shopify. For some reason, the On Page reports are not picking up on one of the new pages. This is effecting my grading. Just wondering why this is happening & whether this may be an indication of a larger problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

On Page missing keywords
I setup my keywords on SEOMoz properly but the On Page result just shows me 2 keywords instead of the 7 that I set for my campaign. I was expecting the application to score the other keywords on wednesday but it did not add the missing keywords. Is this a bug?
