Any opinions about the common anchor text?
-
Hey guys so I was reviewing my website to make sure there are no exact anchor texts repeated throughout the site.
But I was wondering what are your thoughts about the common (and useless) anchor text like "read more", "learn more", "see more information", "contact us", and things of that nature. These are usually repeated across the majority of sites out there, how does Google differentiate between over optimized anchor text and these common anchor texts?
-
I wouldn't worry too much about those. Just focus on keeping your site natural.
-
You are going to see very little benefit from optimized anchor text on internal links. Use the anchor text that will most encourage your users to keep clicking through. This doesn't mean necessarily "read more", though. Think about calls to action in anchor text that are more compelling.
-
These common or 'useless' anchor texts are what search engines grew up with. Before marketers started using anchor text to manipulate search engines, "read more," "learn more" etc was fairly common. Try focusing less on anchor text and more on the proximity of words around anchor text instead.
I'm not sure how Google differentiates between the two, but then again I don't really care because I don't use anchor text to improve rankings. I let my quality content do that.

Combining adjacent image and text links
Hey, The pages on one of our sites has a lot of links on it, which I have read a couple of times can be bad for SEO, although many say don't worry too much about it. However, I was thinking to reduce links and also reduce code size combining adjacent image and text links. For example they current look like this:

"
Products page" I am thinking maybe I should change to the following:
"Products page" However, is this bad code and therefore could be bad for SEO? I have tried Googling this but couldn't seem to find anything on it.0 -
When trying to sculpt an internal link structure, is there any point in placing text links to top level pages that are already in the main menu?
Does Google recognise a link in the content if there is already a link in the menu? My understanding is that Google only counts the first link it finds.

Background Images and ALT text
We pretty much exclusively use background images for our sites. How do I add in alt text? I tried a Google search for this issue and the best answer I could find was "Use the 'title' tag in the containing div", but that was from 2010. Is there a better way to do it? And no, we're not going to switch to using standard images, because background images are way more slick for UX.

Can I use the same text in my meta description as I put in my post excerpt?
Hi, I'm just trying to understand the right way to optimise my blog posts and this is likely a dumb question... but to what extent should the text in my meta description differ from the text in my post excerpts? cheers, Andrew

Category Anchor Text - all the same - should I worry?
I have analyzed several websites and have come across sites that have many backlinks from their category pages and those all have the anchor text of the blog title. Should I worry that categories in WordPress can have different Titles and Descriptions and there are plugins to help with the variation. I haven't found any good recommendations regarding if the anchor text should be changed for categories or how to accomplish that. (I have scoured SEOMOZ for answers but may have missed the answer.) Thanks, Linda

Text Placement?
We have an eCommerce site. We have noticed several of our competitors are moving their text to the top of the page. How much of a difference to you think it makes in googles eyes to have the text at the top above the products vs bellow them? Here is an example of how one of them moved the text to the top http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/119/MNGR/Motorcycle-Jackets.aspx

Opinions please on Duplicate page titles & too many on-page links warnings.-
Hello folks, I'm a total SEO newbe but totally enjoying
On-Page Optimization | | CSC
using SEOmoz to learn more. We have ecommerce sites and the 1st crawl flags – as appears typical too many on-page links. We display up to 20 products (each with three links!)
and I’m trying to push to have fewer but meeting resistance from colleagues.
We have links duplicated all over the site believing it eases navigation. My question is just how critical is the number of products displayed
and the resulting volume of links to SEO results? Also we currently have collections of products displayed
across several pages which of course have the same page title and this is flagged
as a duplication error. I wonder if product auto-scrolling help as this means only a certain number of products are displayed at one time on one page thus reducing links and the need for duplicate page titles? My superiors are resisting change (perhaps nervous of spoiling
what already works) and I need to know where to direct my persuasive powers! Many thanks in anticipation, Spence0 -
Is anchor text link juice passed in internal links?
Let's say I have www.bobswidgets.com. If I have "widgets for sale in tuscon arizona' be the anchor text on an internal link on www.bobswidgets.com/page1 which goes to www.bobswidgets.com/page2 - does the value of the anchor text (widgets for sale in tuscon arizona) get passed internally? External links pass the value of the anchor text but do internal links?
