What is my next step for SEO?
-
My SEOMoz trial is drawing to a close and I have spent the month doing a ton of cleanup on my sites to remove errors and warning and otherwise comply with the basics of what I need to do to help position them. What I need to do now is take the next step and move them "up the ladder."
SEOMoz looks good and I don't want this to sound like an ultimatum but I am also getting better at Google Analytics and their Webmaster tools. The question is, "Should I pay the money to SEOMoz or just work with google?" I am a very small shop with a very limited budget. Also, time is of the essence...I am prepared to continue my subscription if I can get an answer to the question: "What do I do next and how can SEOMoz help me where just knowing Google Analytics and Webmaster Tools can not?"
Thanks a ton in advance!

One of the most valuable things for me is the 'seo toolbar', I use this ALL THE TIME for checking blogs to guest post on - I use myblogguest and usually receive between 5-10 offers, when 2 offers are very similar I use the tool bar to make my decision.
When I do this for guest blogging I see very good results, sometimes a blog may look visually better but could have a DA/PA 18-23 against a blog that looks rubbish but has DA/PA 50-60, I would have never known this without the tool bar.
I also use it to work out roughly how much more work is involved to jump rankings by comparing my stats against ones above me in the results.

I always want to be empathetic to the fact that for a small business, $99/month is a serious expense. Put in your shoes, I'd be thinking about your usage of the following:
- Use of http://opensiteexplorer.org for link evaluations, identify opportunities, analyzing the competition, etc.
- Use of http://pro.seomoz.org/tools/keyword-difficulty for SERPs analysis, choosing keywords, doing research, etc.
- Use of http://seomoz.org/seo-toolbar for on-the-fly analysis
- Use of http://pro.seomoz.org/ to keep track of KPIs over time, watch your six on error/warnings, track rankings, track social account growth, etc.
- Use of PRO Perks, Q+A, the PRO webinars, etc
If you're using 2+ of these regularly, it's likely worth staying and examining whether you're getting value and keep coming back. If not, then probably wise to drop the service (and hopefully we'll earn back your business as we keep growing our value/tools/data/info and your business scales, too).
Hope that helps!

The question I would ask is how important is it for you to get your sites 'up that ladder' and what is your time worth? If the answer is very and more than $10/hr, then I would say keep SEOMoz. It sounds like you've spend quite a bit of time on on-site seo...where I would now focus some time on is using the competitive analysis within SEOmoz to fully understand why your competitors for each of your sites are further 'up the ladder' as you put it. Then work backwords from there....I've find that tool in particular to be a valuable time saver. Also the reports are very useful in tracking and sharing your progress. Just my .02.

First off it's a monthly fee of $99 so your not locked into a 12 month contract, if you decide in 2 months time it's not for you, you can just end the account.
But more to the point, do you feel using SEOmoz has earned your company $99 in the knowledge you have gained?
Personally if your into SEO or do it for a living then SEOmoz is a must, if you want to learn how to climb the rankings or have a problem then I cant think of a better place to get an accurate answer.

SEO impact of redirecting high ranking mirror site to the main website
During SEO audit for a client I noticed that they had over a dozen duplicate websites that are carbon copies of the main website. This was done via CMS platform and DNS. One of the mirror sites has about 400 indexed pages and has Moz DA of 42 and 137k External Equity-Passing Links. Full metrics comparison is attached. I originally planned on doing rel="canonical" on the mirror site but the CMS vendor never even heard of it and is refusing to implement it in the header. My only other option is doing one to one 301 redirects. Since the mirror site ranks well, even competes with main domain for some positions on the 1st page of SERP, what will be the impact after the redirects? Is doing 301's still the best option? Thanks! Competitor outranking us despite all SEO metrics in our favour
Hi, We are trying to outrank a competitor of ours on Google for around 100 terms that we are both clearly targetting. Our competitor currently 'wins' in the SERPS around 70% of the time, often ranking in the top 3 positions. The problem is, we are absolutely convinced that all onsite and offsite SEO metrics we are monitoring would suggest that our content should almost always place higher than theirs. Here is what I know: All pages on both websites are rated 'A' by the Moz on-page-grader tool for the phrases we are targetting, with virtually no tech issues to be addressed on either site Our domain authority is 10 points higher than theirs Neither of us have external links to the relevant pages on our sites (although we are working on some for ours) Our Page Authority is considerably higher on average - often by 10 points or more We have considerably more linking route domains, from better sites. Also many more total external links The HTML title and H1 headings of our pages contain the target phrases at the beginning - our competitors are the same. Although they often ONLY include the target phrases in their title, wheras in our title they might only take up 1/3 of the total characters We have images optimised for the target phrases on our pages. As do they. We use the target phrases roughly the same number of times in our copy text, as do they I have totally run out of ideas now for further optimising our site/pages to consistently rank better for these target phrases, although maybe these are a couple of factors that could be having an impact on the rankings: The structure of their website is perhaps optimised more for these target phrases - our site is much bigger, so perhaps our 100 pages are given less relevance on our site than their 100 pages? - but surely our stronger page authority would suggest otherwise? Perhaps Google is using page engagement statistics to determine that their site is 'betteer' than ours in terms of user appeal and engagment? Can anyone think of something that I might have missed? Is there another major ranking factor I have perhaps neglected in my research? I know link building strategies are a good way to approach this in the long run, but we are currently just concerned about why we are not already ranking better when clearly they are not undertaking any link building strategies of their own. Any help or pointers here would be enormously appreciated. Thanks Lou

Find a 4xx or 5xx link referenced in an SEO Crawl Report
So I just got the Crawl Diagnostics report for a client site and it came back with a number of 4xx errors and even 1 5xx error. So while I can find the URL that has the problem, I cannot find the pages that have the links pointing to these non-existent or problematic pages. Normally I would just search the database for the site, but in this case I don't have access to it as the site is on a proprietary platform with no access other than to the CMS. Is there anyway to get the linking URL from the report? Thanks!

New on SEO Moz and need help regarding panda recover.
Hello Dear Members, I am a new member to not only seomoz but to the SEO World as well. I was learning and implementing SEO from the last 5,6 months and got my website on Google.com page 1. I was quite happy with all the results. I recently got adsense approved on my site and was quite happy with the earnings as well. Unfortunately the most recent Panda update has effected most of my SEO efforts I was doing from the last 5,6 months. My rankings are effected a lot and same with my earnings from adsense. My rankings are effected in this manner. A couple of keywords that were in top 3 spots (1st page Google.com) are now at 7,8 (1st page Google.com) position. There are 3,4 pages that were previously on 5,6 spot (1st page Google.com) are now on 15, 16 spot (2nd page Google.com). Now I want to ask what tools from seomoz can help me to regain my lost positions in Google? Secondly what type of strategy (backlinks) can help me to regain the lost rankings? Best Regards Sam

SEO Targeting: Ideal monthly keyword search volume?
What's your SEO sweet spot for monthly keyword search volume*? At what volume do you actually expect to see traffic? (I know this depends heavily on competition for said keywords). (*Currently measuring volume via Google AdWords Keyword Tool / SEOmoz keyword difficulty tool. || Comparing exact match and broad match.)
