SEO Over-optimization
-
How do you know when your doing too much SEO?
Started back on a couple of sites in which I had done very little to no Seo.
Dont want to get an over-optimization penalty.
-
I totally agree Matt. When we take a step back and ask "do these pages look like they're written for a search engine", that allows us to start to see the unnatural patterns that come from that type of approach that's geared toward ranking and not users.
I also put a lot of emphasis on that concept though - unnatural patterns. Think about the greater web outside the small world of SEO driven sites. Is it natural for someone who has NO clue about SEO, to repetitively use the same keywords over and over in link anchor text? Absolutely not.
Apply that same rule to every other aspect of the work.
Do NOT however, throw out the principles of Information Retrieval in the process. Proper page titles, proper (and appropriate use) of keyword specific anchor text, H1s, H2s, breadcrumbs, content and topical organization -these are all CRITICAL to Information Retrieval, going back to the days of library index card systems (adapted to web content). And that's true even without SEO.
-
Ah...ok I see that point and did not obviously look at the link profile.
I am afraid I am quite cynical about the penguin update. While I appreciate that it would be difficult to create an algorithm that does a 100% good job based on what you are seeing the algorithm is quite flawed.
There were a number of things written about EDMs and how they were being punished but perhaps the fact that it is an EDM in this case helped.

ranking high for cowboys tickets
site does not look similar however
The backlink profile = thousands upon thousands of spam links

For keyword cowboy tickets ?
For that term that site looks very similar to the other sites on page one? In fact for my money it is more relevant than all the national sites that are above it.
Hard to judge without knowing more details.
-
I would say they went up because:
1. some site above you were unjustly removed. It is happening. Yes this is my opinion.
2. Some really crappy sites were removed. What people say penguin was suppose to do and I support if in fact they get it sorted out to the point were the stop doing #1.
-
Well then I would say you are on the right lines - keep up the good work and as I mentioned look how you can build you sites authority online through positive link building efforts - as this will help with your rankings...
-
Yeah they went up after Penguin - but I did not do any SEO on them in the past.
The content in the past was minimal but had more keyword stuffing.
Now im adding fresh content and removed all the keyword stufffing.
-
Have they seen an increase or decrease in ranking over the past few weeks? From what you have written it sounds like you are going about it in the right way. Just be careful with you link profile as Egol has mentioned, but do work on gaining exposure through means such as social media etc - refer to advice on link building given throughout the SeoMoz blog and on recent Q and A's
-
Content is all fresh - keywords are integrated into the content minimally
1 site is ranked #12 for main keyword Im targeting
Other sites are ranked -
29
42
49
-
I think you are right Egol - link profiles are under more scrutiny than ever and that is where the biggest risk of gaining a penalty lays.
Spend time and create decent content rather than spammy keyword laden pages - I have seen you push this point many times on here and elsewhere.
I also think people can take a big clue as to the quality of their content from their bounce rates and time on page stats - pages ranking for keywords but having a relatively high bounce rate and a low time on page.
-
I think that the biggest risk is doing a heavy attack using keyword anchor text on inbound links.
If you avoid that along with spamming keywords in content and title tags, I think that you will be OK.
-
The best way to think of this is as follows:
Do your pages look like they are written for a visitor or a search engine? Is it clear to any visitor that you are aiming for a certain keyword on your page and that you have created your page for this purpose alone, if so I would look at rewriting things to make them look more natural. I have found that it is fine to optimize all the on-page factors but you need to make sure that you are clearly creating a site that serves quality information but contains the keyword you are targeting rather than just aiming at that keyword. Be good but not perfect.
How I look at it is Google wants to serve the most relevant content for a search term so they are not going to penalize a site that clearly fulfills this with decent relevant content even if the page is well optimized for a keyword. Yes Matt Cutts has said that they are leveling the playing field for overly optimized websites - however I don't see them doing this a the expense of the quality of Google's index so just make sure you are creating a decent information rich site and not a spammy keyword bucket!
Now is a time when those that have worked hard and spent time creating content are being rewarded.
I think this post by Matt Cutts highlights the ever increasing importance of creating decent content in relation to over optimization - http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/another-step-to-reward-high-quality.html

Recommendations on SEO Tools, Strategies and References
Hello all, I have been doing SEO/SEM work on some sites I own for a few years but now I am in a position where I need to handle these tasks for a significant numbers of clients on a freelance basis. Obviously, this requires much more work and organization as well as some additional tools to help. I was wondering if the experts on here could help me with the following: Does anyone know of any online step-by-step guides or checklists that highlight a comprehensive SEO and digital marketing strategy? This could be helpful while trying to juggle multiple projects at once and provide a blueprint that I can follow and alter as I go. What free project management tools do you recommend? I was thinking of using Wunderlist, Trello or Evernote to keep track of projects, but there may be other suggestions I am not aware of. I have it in my budget to spend about $200/month worth of paid tools. Which tools are best for keyword research, backlink analysis, search rankings etc.? I am currently testing out Moz and SEM Rush, but would like a wide variety of information that helps me efficiently execute a plan but without too much white noise. What are the best paid (or free) tools to accomplish this? What are the best references for Q&As and reference materials on strategies, etc. for when I need to deep dive and do some learning on the fly? Besides this website of course. Thanks for any help!!

What are Best Practices for Ault Site SEO
Has anyone here had experience doing SEO for an Adult DVD website? A company has approached me and they obviously only want White Hat practices. I have used open site explorer to do research on some competitors. The top competitors of this company seem to have only a few high PR links from High Authority industry sites and almost all have a link from the Yahoo Directory. Does anyone know where or how to create high authority content links from this niche? It seems that most of the competitor links are on sub par pages and are single links in the side nav of other sites. I am not sure if I can post a link to the company here but any suggestions on link building for adult sites would be great. Please remember they are a retailer and don't have pop up advertising or any illegal content. Thanks,

SEO Package: Good Value?
I'm having a real hard time trying to dig through all the BS and find a reputable SEO company that delivers quality and value. Anyway, here's a package that I'm considering from a company called eBrandz. It seems a bit overpriced to me, but I don't have a lot of experience with reputable SEO companies, so I'm hoping someone can weigh in - on both the package itself for the price, and the company (if you have any information about them). $1500/month 8 Guest Posts (With 80 Bookmarks) 8 Articles with Syndication (With 80 Bookmarks) 1 Press Release (With Bookmarking) 75 "Curated Business Directory Submissions" Social Bookmarking for 5 Urls (Each Url to 20 Sites) 1 (every other month) Video Creation (45 to 90 seconds) With Submission and Bookmarking.

What is the best white hat seo link building strategy?
My goal is to build links that comply with Google's Quality Guidelines. I am wondering what is the best way to approach webmasters or bloggers about submitting guest posts or writing content. I have done a competitive analysis, and have a list of potential link sources, but I am not sure what approach to take next. Any advice or strategy would be appreciated.

SEO in multiple languages
I'm doing SEO for an apartment rental web-site. We have one web-site for each destination. And for some (popular) destinations we have a separate domain for some languages. For instance: http://www.barcelonacheckin.com/en for English and http://www.barcelonacheckin.com/fr for French In another destination we have http://costabrava-ok-apartment.com/en for English and http://www.location-costabrava.fr/ for French. We have good result with the separate domains for languages. But I'm facing two problems: We do not get any progress in the ranks in English in any Web-site There's a lot written about SEO in English and there are many opportunities to build relevant links. But we are out of sources for eg. French. Our SEO routine exists of participating in forums on famous travel web-sites, guest post exchange with our blogs, link exchange and presence in Social media. Can anybody give us some suggestions?

Should we fire our SEO Vendor?
Dear SeoMozers, We are working on ranking towards some hyper competitive keywords (each query has millions of searches a month) and working with an external SEO Vendor. We were not satisfied with the progress, therefore we asked them to send a revised SEO Plan. Here's what they proposed: 1. On Page Optimization (standard techniques) Off Page Optimization 1. Directory Submissions (100) 2. Article Marketing (Two unique 300 word articles to be submitted to 300 directories) 3. Press Release (Two Press Releases to 100 PR Sites) 4. Classified Ads Submissions 5. Business Listings 6. Link Reinforcement (Create wheel to circulate traffic) 7. Blog Submissions, Commenting, Forum Posting 8. Web 2.0 Link Building (Squidoo Lens, Hub Page, Link Wheel etc) 9. One Way Links (Not Specified how many) Our concern is that this sounds like low quality link building. We've given them 19 top keywords to achieve rankings for and will be paying $20-25K to achieve Top 3-5 rankings for the targeted terms. Do you think this strategy would work or should we change the SEO Vendor?
