Total Linking Root Domins
-
I'm still very new to link building and SEO, (only one month in!) I have a reasonable starting point as our web site is fairly well designed but I have a long way to go to catch up in what is a very competitive market! (Music Retail).
My question is regarding Open Site explorer and its ability to accurately reflect back links. Looking at total quantity of unique back link domains Open Site currently has me at 36 domains, Google webmaster tools has me at 187!! The one site that all my 'watched' competitors has is DMOZ, this gives them a great boost on the SEOmoz and open site rankings. I have 3 links on DMOZ and they all show up on my Webmaster tools yet don't show on either SEOmoz or open site. I've left it for a couple of months to see if it caught up but no real change.
My worry is that there seems little value in the SEOmoz tools if their not at least as complete as Google webmaster is to allow me a fair comparison! Is there anything wrong with my setup on SEOmoz??

Your link is 5 clicks away from the home page which, for DMOZ, should be sufficient enough for the link to be discovered. I checked the AHREFS and Raven but neither show the link either which causes me to suspect this link is new. Can you confirm what date the link was first created?
I checked some other links from the same DMOZ page and they are not being seen by OSE either, but they do appear in AHREFS and Raven. I therefore opened a ticket with the SEOmoz help desk to investigate this issue.
Hopefully, the link will appear on 5/29 after the next update.

Across the board, SEO tools can benefit from significant improvements, including the SEOmoz tool set. I was excited to learn about SEOmoz recent acquisition of $18 million. I am hopeful a significant portion of that budget will be allocated towards the development and improvement of SEO tools.
With the above stated, I do not anticipate any SEO tool to be able to keep up with the massively number and type of changes made by search engines. Just look at the past year. The following changes were HUGE: Panda, G+, Local, Bing taking over Yahoo, HTML5, a massive increase in mobile usage, Penguin and much more.
I too am seeking better tools and if you find them please share them with the community.
With respect to your DMOZ link, was it earned in the past 60 days? If it is older then 90 days and has not shown up in OSE, it is unlikely to appear after the next update. That's about all the information I can share without examining the link.

In response to the DMOZ depth, it is no deeper than my competitors, in some cases less deep but theirs are showing in Open Site and SEOmoz. The only reason I highlight that particular link is simply that it has reasonable value and my competitors have it in their link profiles on Open site.
I'm guessing my only choice is to wait another month to see if it appears.
I just want to state that I wasn't trying to rubbish SEOmoz as such, It's a fantastic website with excellent content, invaluble for a new starter. I was just finding it difficult to make a valid comparison particularly when there was so much disparity between the Google Webmaster results and Open site explorer.

All of the SEOmoz tools are based upon the Linkscape crawl of the web. The crawler takes 2-3 weeks to crawl the web and then another 1-2 weeks to process the data. The SEOmoz tools and Open Site Explorer (OSE) are updated about once per month. The next update is scheduled for May 29th. You can view the update schedule here: https://seomoz.zendesk.com/entries/345964-linkscape-update-schedule. In summary, the backlinks you see are always going to be 1 - 2 months behind.
You should also know the link profile shown is not 100% complete, nor even 90%. The last I heard Linkscape crawls about the top 40% of web pages. That is perfectly fine in that, for the most part, if a link is not visible in OSE it likely has little to no value.
There are numerous other tools out there that also crawl the web in a similar manner to Linkscape. I have researched many of them and, in my opinion, the next two best crawlers are Raven and AHREFS. All of them have the same issues. They are not complete. The internet involves tens of millions of websites. There are single websites which offer millions of pages so the total volume of pages to crawl reaches incredibly high numbers.
My worry is that there seems little value in the SEOmoz tools if their not at least as complete as Google webmaster is to allow me a fair comparison!
Google had $38 billion in sales in 2011. They have the ability to index a page in seconds where it would take SEOmoz at least weeks to capture that same link. Your expectation is that a group of companies whose combined sales is less then 1% of Google be able to produce results which are "at least as complete"? It's simply not reasonable.
If you wish to try Raven and AHREFS tools you can. Perhaps they will even see a specific link you desire such as the one from DMOZ.
If you can share the URL of the DMOZ link and your site, we can offer a more complete analysis. The problem with DMOZ is the depth of it's site. Web crawlers, including Google, only go so deep into a site. The question is, using your mouse, how many clicks would it take to get to your DMOZ link from the DMOZ home page. The design of a site like Wikipedia, for example, is very flat. The design of DMOZ is very deep. The page which contains your link matters a lot.

Link Activity to site keeps decreasing
Recently I have started seeing daily declines in the total inbound links to my site. 4 of my top 5 sources are all experiencing pretty significant declines and in fact, Pinterest has declined from a high of 16,295 links in Nov '15 to a current number that is 8,479 on 1/6/16. Any ideas on what could be causing these declines? I did upload a new sitemap in Nov, could this be the cause?

Curious, anyone ever had over half of their indexed links drop on an e-commerce site?
In a year went from around 300k indexed pages to around >100k according to GWT. Could this be duplicate content issue, lost links, spam, aged links or all of the above? either way an audit is in order. Thanks! Chris

How Am I Linked to These Sites?
I was going through Google Analytics, specifically looking at the Channels under Acquisition. I found a number of sites that Google is giving credit as sources of traffic.

When I went to the sites, however, and searched the page source for links to my site, I could not find any. My site is www.towermarketing.net. The sites being listed by GA are:
blackhawkhardware.com
musicas.baixar-musicas-gratis.com If anyone can tell me how Tower is getting traffic from these sites, and what I can do to fix it - because at this point I am considering them spam - I would appreciate it. Thanks!0 -
I only have 65 extrernal links after 8 months of link building?
I am currently employing an SEO consultant who has been carrying out link building for the past 8 months. having signed up to SEOmoz i noticed that i only have 65 external links when my competitors have 13,000+. My consultant gave me a list of over 300 links he has putting into place but SEOmoz only shows 65. What I am concerned about is why I have only so few and where the others have gone? And how do i catch up to my competitors and put a proper (better) strategy in place.

Any thoughts on why Nextag and MonsterMarketPlace are linking to our site?
I'm looking in WMT at the crawl errors and I noticed that our website has gotten a lot of Not Found crawl errors that seem strange. A lot of these not found pages are Display URLs that I use in PPC advertising, but not actual redirects (i.e. explorica.com/EducationalTrips). When I looked at how these links were being found, the inbound links were coming from Nextag.com and monstermarketplace.com, two sites that our company has never had a relationship with. We're an educational travel company, so we'd have no reason to. When I followed the links, it looks like it's coming from their "Sponsored Links," but these aren't Google or Bing Ads. We don't even advertise on the content network. Example link: http://www.monstermarketplace.com/starters-and-alternators/alternator-motorola-style-12v-51a-10376 (the ads do rotate so my site might not appear when you check it out). Anyone ever had experience with this type of issue?

Backlinks vs Incoming links
Hi, I've been getting stuck into some SEO analysis for a company I work for and I am a little confused. I've tried a search to get an answer but this has ended up being more confusing. The company has been around for decades and their website since 1996. I read everywhere about 'backlinks'. My SEO toolbar shows ZERO backlinks in Google but 218 in Bing. Google Webmaster tools shows nearly 2,000 incoming links from other sites. Is a backlink the same as an incoming link? Why is this tool showing zero? I am even getting email from SEO spammers saying my backlink count is ZERO. But I can see links everywhere I look to the site. Also, on the link analysis tool with SEOMOZ a competitor is showing 3000 external showing links with 250,000 total links. My site is showing 50 and 470 respectively. I have spent the best part of two years getting the site listed in industry related directories. We have paid for entries in Yahoo and some other high (PR) -ranking directories. Prior to me there was someone else adding the site to directories and getting incoming links from industry related sites. So this has been going on a while. Why are the backlings showing as zero but links from external sites showing over 1800? Thanks TT

Links are not found in OSE or am I missing ?
Hi.. All of our targeted pages have gone through serious Blog Posting and Social Bookmarking. All the sites were more than PR1 or 2 and all of them had a dofollow link with the perfect anchor texts. But when I trying to check our pages on OSE, it doesnt any of them. Why is that ? Im getting worried now. We have spent our last 7 months on this .

What is the most effective link building technique?
Hi seomoz community! My question is this: Which is more effective in a) generating traffic and b) increasing authority in the long and short term? Press releases or back-linking through blogs and forums? Some more detail: You have $6000 to spend over a 6 month period on which ever technique you choose. $6000 can buy you 20 press releases, each distributed to over 250 online news outlets (yahoo finance, td waterhouse, ABC, etc), emailed to editors of publications in your industry niche, and tweeted by 10 to-15 influential tweeters. Every release is published by the same news organization plus 5-10 new sources per release. The news organizations all have relatively high domain authorities (60-90) and generate 2500-3000 unique pageviews in total for each article. They also all link back to my site through the articles. $6000 can buy you 6 months of back-link building - outsourced overseas in India. Based on keywords that our target audience are using to find our competitors (long-tail included), we post links through blog/forum comments that appear in results when those search terms are queried. The blog/forums have varying domain authorities in our industry but none higher than 60. Again the question: Which technique is more effective in a) generating traffic and b) increasing authority in the long and short term? Press releases or back-linking through blogs and forums? My current website has a domain authority of 66. Please share your opinions or thoughts. Thanks 🙂
