Do you think it will be a good idea to delete old blog pages off the server
-
I paid somebody to build my website using Dreamweaver, and at one point I didn't know how to use the template which automatically updates every page in the menu section so I stupidly broke the template on every new page when I made the websites blog and put the pages into a subfolder. I realised this was a silly thing to do and now and I now know how to use the template correctly I've copied every single page over from the subfolder and put it into the main template.
Now I can update the template menu and every page changes automatically. The only problem is I've now got two versions of every page of my blog on the website.
For some reason when I do a sitemap it comes up with a links to the old blog pages I, don't know why when I've removed the links from the blog page? and also the new copies also. I have basically got a copys of all blog pages.
Do you think it will be a good idea to delete old indexed blog pages off the server so that when Google spiders the site it will pick up only the new links to the copy pages?

The 301 redirects was quite easy to set up, but I've actually found a better solution using Dreamweaver for my problem. I replaced all the old pages where I'd broken the template in the sub folder with new versions which are attached to the template with the correct copy and paste the content and title tags. So all the pages which are indexed and now the new looking version.
The one thing I've learnt from this episode is that if you don't know how to operate a particular piece of software and you can't get the answers you require immediately, be patient until you know how to do things correctly.
It saves time in the long run..............

A good description of how to solve your www vs non-www problem can be found here.
My .htaccess code looks like this...
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^example.com
RewriteRule (.*) http://www.example.com/$1 [R=301,L]===============================================
Redirecting an old page to a new page is described here.
My .htaccess code looks like this.....
redirect 301 /old/old.htm http://www.you.com/new.htm

I have no idea what htaccess files are, but I guess I will have to learn.
If a 301 redirect can simply transfer the old webpage directly through to the new one that surely must be the simple answer. Along of course within the incoming link juice.
Is that the case and if so that it will be my project for tomorrow morning as it's 2 AM in the UK

The 301 redirect will be very valuable.
You also have some canonical problems......
Both of these URLs display.

http://endeavourcottage.co.uk/Whitby-lifeboats.html
Do you know if your server can use .htaccess files?

I have just deleted the name of the subdirectory and kept the new blog webpages within the template of the website the same url.
It's very likely that there will be some back links coming into the old blog pages so would it be worthwhile to in the redirect 301?
or just deete the old indexed pages ..

In my opinion, it is very important to delete anything that might be a duplicate.
Also, if the old URLs have any external links their value can be transferred to your new page - making your site compete better almost immediately.

The original blog webpages were created about six months ago and they are indexed if you search etc.
I have just today updated the blog entirely so that it is part of the Dreamweaver template by copying the content from the old pages to the new, painful boring!
So the online website blog now has links going to the new pages moved from the subfolder address.
To people that drop into the blog page now see only the new version only, which matches the rest of the website design and template. I forgot to mention the updated in design recently to list other holiday cottages that are clients and that is why I primarily wanted to change these old blog posts to match the new template which now advertises the new holiday cottages I represent as a letting agent.
If I leave the updated blog page now will Google update the URLs of the blog posts links to the new URLs of the blog posts?
Or should redirect the old original blog posts with a 301 the redirect? I've never done a 301 redirects is it difficult?
-
Question: How long ago did you do this? Was your site established and pulling traffic when the change was done?
Question: If you grab a unique sentence from one of those pages and search for it do you see two copies on google? or bing?
If this was my site I would do 301 redirects of the old URLs to the new URLs and delete the old pages.

2 Menu links to same page. Is this a problem?
One of my clients wants to link to the same page from several places in the navigation menu. Does this create any crawl issues or indexing problems? It's the same page (same url) so there is no duplicate content problems. Since the page is promotional, the client wants the page accessible from different places in the nav bar. Thanks, Dino

Does an age verification home page hurt SEO?
There's a microbrewery in our area that just launched its first website. It has the "verify your age" homepage (which is not really their homepage, but I don't know what it's called) before you can enter. It looks like this: http://angrychairbrewing.com/ Anyway, does this hurt them at all from a rankings standpoint? Also, assuming bots/spiders/ROGER can crawl sites like this, (which I think they would have to be able to do) how do they get around this verification? Thanks, Ruben

Does my font look good in this?
Apologies for the title, but a serious point here.... We (like a lot of people) spend time on almost mechanical on-page optimisation. However, we are finally moving our thinking to our visitors and what works for them - not the search engines. I know, about time. With that in mind we have de-cluttered our content pages and increased font sizes - focussing on usability more. This is an example of a tweaked page - http://www.compactlaw.co.uk/free-legal-information/employment-law/exceptions-for-unfair-dismissal.html This is an un-tweaked page - http://www.compactlaw.co.uk/agency-agreement.html Which do you prefer to read/look at??

Still too many internal links reported on page
Hi Guys I am new here, and very much learning a lot, and enjoying the benefits of being an SEOMoz user. So here goes with my first question (probably of many). I have known for sometime that our website has a top heavy number of links in the primary navigation. But I wasn't too sure how important this was. Our main objective was to make an east to use nav for customers. All of the feedback we have had says that customers really like our navigation, as it is easy to use etc etc. However, when running an SEOMoz campaign on our site, again we got back that there are too many links on the pages. Example, home page has 500+ links. So I decided to do something about this. I have implemented what I think is a good solution where by the drop down navigation isn't loaded on first load. If the user then hovers over one of our "departments" the sub navigation is loaded via Ajax and dropped in. This means if the user wants it, they get it, if not then it's not loaded with the page. My theory being that Google loads the page without all the links, but a user gets the links as and when they need them. I tested with the SEOMoz toolbar and this tells me that when I load the home page there is 167 links in it vs 500+ previously. However, the my campaign still tells me that my home page has 450+ links (and this is a recent crawl of the page). Our site is here: www.uniquemagazines.co.uk Can you tell me is what I have done is a) a good solution and b) does the SEOMoz crawler have the ability to trigger the hover event and cause the AJAX load of the sub navigation content?

Too Many On-Page Links
Most of my pages have "Too Many On-Page Links". If you view the website you will see this is mainly down to the top navigation drop down menu: http://www.cwesolutions.co.uk So if I wanted to reduce the number of links I would have to have category links with landing pages. How much does having "Too Many On-Page Links" effect my website ranking? Is it really important and would I notice a difference if I changed it?

How not to get penalized by having a Single Page Interface (SPI) ?
Guys, I run a real estate website where my clients pay me to advertise their properties. The thing is, from the beginning, I had this idea about a user interface that would remain entirely on the same page. On my site the user can filter the properties on the left panel, and the listings (4 properties at each time) are refreshed on the right side, where there is pagination. So when the user clicks on one property ad, the ad is loaded by ajax below the search panel in the same page .. there's a "back up" button that the user clicks to go back to the search panel and click on another property. People are loving our implementation and the user experience, so I simply can't let go of this UI "inovation" just for SEO, because it really is something that makes us stand out from our competitors. My question, then, is: how not to get penalized in SEO by having this Single Page Interface, because in the eyes of Google users might not be browsing my site deep enough ?

How to Add canonical tags on .ASPX pages?
What is the proper way (or is it possible) to add canonical tags on website pages that end in .aspx? If you add a canonical tag to the Master Page it will put that exact canonical tag on every page, which is bad. Is there a different version of the tag to put on individual pages? And one to put on the home page without the Master Page error?
