What if my brand name is my keyword?

Referencing the new 'over optimization' penalties.. What if your company name was "Buy a Burrito" and your website website was buyaburrito.com (not a real site), and your main keyphrase was "buy a burrito". Will Google treat all Branded Terms as exact or phrase match keywords and penalize you?
-
That makes sense. So basically the answer is that Google is smart enough to tell that it is your actual business name, and not a website you bought to rank with. Thanks!

Hi David,
Google's semantic processing has gotten pretty sophisticated - If the name of the website is on every page and is the URL, and also makes up a significant portion of the anchor text, those are all pretty clear signals that "this is the name of the site."
With an exact match domain you want to make it clear that you're not a fly-by-night site just set up to quickly take advantage of a single keyword. Some ways to do this are:
- Make sure you have deep content on every page - Panda can be particularly brutal to EMDs.
- REALLY watch your usage of your brand name - give it the "read out loud" test to see if you're using it too much and giving the appearance of keyword stuffing.
- Optimize non-home-page pages for other, related keywords and create content accordingly
- Build a history of social mentions - search engines look to social mentions and interactions as proof that "this is a real company."
- Focus less on anchor text when building links, and more on creating sharable content that people want to link to. People will be more likely to use your keyword as anchor text than would be typical, since it's already the name of the site, so I would focus link building efforts on other keywords and just on general link volume, even if the anchor text is "click here."
Basically, do everything you can to show Google that you're a legit site that deserves to rank, and not a keyword spammer.

Thanks for the response, but the diversity of locations doesn't answer the problem. Those links, if I am linking as branding, would be exact matches to my keyword. So in the anchor text diversity examples some professionals give of:
40% Branding
40% Random
20% Keywordthat would automatically make the branding fit in the category of Keyword which gives:
60% Keyword
40% RandomHow do we know that Google knows the difference? I'm not just referencing the domain name... but more importantly, the business name is the same as the keyword, which gives the branding issue.
-
This is called a "exact match" domain name, and a lot has been written about the subject. From my experience Google will most likely not treat it as a branded keyword in the beginning. When you are ranking #1 for your term and there are sitelinks under your domain name, then it's a different story.
But even if you don't have an EMD your linkbuilding techniques should still be the same;
- Get diverse backlinks. Some social, some blogs, some directories, you know the game!
- Don't build links to only 1 page (like your Homepage)
- Change around the anchor text
Edit: Grammar.

Keyword research, creating copy, fixing on-page optimisation - what next?
Hello - Wondered if I could get people's thoughts. We/I have started working on a client's website to improve everything - a general overhaul across SEO, on-page optimisation etc. I'm relatively new to this although picking things up and learning on the job which is great, and Moz is so helpful! So far we have conducted a review of the website, created a large list of keywords and analysed these, started overhauling the copy and adding the new keywords within this, have plans to overhaul the other elements of the site (headings, tags etc) and improve the design, functionality and customer journey through the website. My question is: where do I go from here in terms of keywords and SEO? Is it a case of plugging in the keywords we've researched, watch how they perform, and then switch things up with different keywords if they aren't performing as well as we expected? Is it really a lot of trial and error or is there an exact science behind it that I'm missing? I just feel a little as though we've pulled these keywords out of thin-air to a degree, and are adding them into our copy because the numbers on Moz show they should perform well, and they are what we are trying to promote on the website. But I don't know if this is right?! Perhaps I'm over-thinking it...

Please take a look at my keyword usage
Hi All, Traffic to few pages of my site is dipping from last couple of months. When I analyzed one of the web page (http://ow.ly/IEkt307dfNr) in Moz tools, it is warning that the keyword "dance classes" is used excessively in the page (30+ times). But, it is used in genuine manner; because that page is a listing page of "dance class teachers" who provide the service, we added "dance classes" under each of the provider. It helps users to connect with the teach easily. Is this okay or will it fall under keyword stuffing? Should I change something?

Google Listing Brand Name as Page Title rather than actual set Title
Any search result including our website is displaying our search result title like this: "Brand Name: Partial Page Title" instead of what it should be "Page Title" (as an example). Where is the "Brand Name:" coming from? We've verified we don't have any code that could cause this, and we're blocking in robots.txt directory listings being used for our search result title/meta. This isn't happening for our competitors. Any ideas on why this is, and if it's something we can control?

Using meta keywords
Hello, I've read conflicting opinions regarding the use of meta keywords. I know Matt Cutts stated a few years ago that Google does not use them as a ranking signal but many still use them. This raises a few questions: 1. Is there any reason to still use meta keywords? 2. Isn't it just a way to let your competitors know what you're optimizing for? 3. How do other search engines treat meta keywords? Thanks!

Why Does this Site Rank for so Many Keywords?
I was doing some research today and kept coming across this site sylvane.com I checked OSE and found that it only has a DA of 37 PA of 35, and only 79 linking domains (966 links total). I got to looking and there are a few links like this http://lulala.us/twxoops/html/userinfo.php?uid=303 Anyway, accroding to SEMRush, this site ranks for over 6,000 keywords. I ran content on a couple of their high ranking pages and the content is not unique, at least not very unique on the pages I checked. What is so special about that site that google is giving it so much love? I am not trying to call them out, I just want to know what this site is doing to garner the favor of google when I have a site in the same niche with a higher DA, PA, linking domains, and social signals.

301 redirects and old domain names
Thanks to the great advice i've received on this forum, I'm combining 50 different truck sites into a single, ultimate truck website. So my question is how long should I make a website 301 redirect to the appropriate page on my new website? My thought is that if it works well to have a single website, it might be nice to eventually sell off some of the old domain names that I won't be using anymore. Thanks! Andy
