Who is beating you on Google (after Penguin)?
-
Hi,
After about a month of Penguin and 1 update, I am starting to notice an annoying pattern as to who is beating me in the rankings on google. I was wondering if anybody else has noticed this.
The sites who are beating me - almost without exception - fall into these 2 categories.1) Super sites that have little or nothing to do with the service I am offering. Now it is not the homepages that are beating me. In almost all cases they are simply pages hidden in their forums where somebody in passing mentioned something relating to what I do.
2) Nobodies. Sites that have absolutely no links back to them, and look like they were made by a 5 year old.
Has anybody else noticed this? I am just wondering if what I see only apply to my sites or if this is a pattern across the web. Does this mean that for small sites to rank, it is now all about on-page SEO?
If it all about on-page, well that is great... much easier than link building. But I want to make sure others see the same thing before dedicating a lot of time to overhaul my sites and create new content.|
Thanks!

For long tail queries I don't worry about junk sites beating me. Because I know that I will get them over time.

Hi Egol,
Thanks for the feedback. I appreciate your insight.I forgot to add that I am actually seeing this more for my long-tail keywords. Luckily not for my primary keywords where I am still ranking pretty well (#1 for most). But the confusing part is that the sites I am being beaten by don't seem to be optimized for these long-tail keywords either. In fact, one of the sites is only 3 months old and a lot of his content is stolen from other sites.
But not to whine, I know this is part of the game, I just wanted to know if this was something other people were seeing as well in order to make a game plan. I am still planning on being in a holding pattern for about 2-3 more months to get more info on Penguin. But every little bit helps.
Thanks.

I see what you describe on four types of sites:
-
new sites
-
sites that need better on-page optimization
-
older sites that have not gained a lot of popularity
-
sites that are being held back by some problem

Google Manual Action Disappear
Hi Guys, I have a website that received unnatural link message. We had started link removal process, disavowed not approachable links and file reconsideration four times but all the times Google sent some samples of unnatural links and rejected our reconsideration. Last week we again disavowed non approachable links and planned to file reconsideration after a week but today when i tried to file reconsideration, Manual action message was disappeared. We haven't received any message from Google. The same case was happened with one more of our site earlier. Manual action disappeared means it has been revoked or something else??

Penguin Recovery Possible Solution (when all fails...)?
Hi, INTRO We were hit pretty bad - first with unnatural links warning and then (we assume) by penguin. We removed a lot of links and disavowed the removed along with all others we couldn't.

The manual penalization was revoked but the site is still down. I understand that Penguin and Unnatural links are not the same.
I assume that while our removal and fixes were enough for the manual penalty to be removed the penguin algorithm still disapproves us. Also, I am not expecting to be where we were but we know our current locations don't make sense (several pages seem to be de-indexed). AND THE QUESTION... SINCE ALL HAS FAILED, we consider removing the main landing pages (which were the target for link-building) and build new ones with new URLs. In the old ones placing 404 and not 301. This means that all the spammy links that were built will point to non-existing pages (404)
(besides for those that point to the homepage...) Do you think it will resolve the problem? Or since the spammy links still point to our domain we are still in a problem? (even if to 404 pages). The way we see it, it is the last resort prior to dropping the domain! Thanks0 -
Google Places Listing Active In Two Seperate Google Places Accounts?
Hi is there any issues with having a google places listing in two seperate google places accounts. For example we have a client who cannot access their old google places account (ex-employee had their login details which they can't get) and want us to take control over the listing. If we click the "is this your listing" manage this page button - and claim the listing, will this transfer the listing to our control? Or will it create a duplicate? Are there any problems having the listing in different separate accounts. Is it a situation in which the last person who manages the listing takes control? And the listing automatically deactivates from the old account? Do all the images remain aswell? Thanks,

Recent Penguin Update
Hi SEOMoz, Today www.carrentalbuddy.com.au was hit pretty big by the Penguin 2.0 update (I believe). We had some pretty strong rankings for multiple search terms and we believe we have done everything by the book for Google. We can't seem to figure out why our rankings have dropped so dramatically recently and was hoping that some SEOMoz's could take a quick look to help us fix this problem. Kindest Regards, Chris

Multiple Google+ Local (Google Place) under one email address
As a automotive dealership group, we have 15+ business listings set up under one Google+ local account. Google+ Local (Google Places) offers the ability to upload a data file for 10+ listings, so we've kept all listings under one login for efficiency. Is there any specific local SEO benefit or any general benefit at all to having each business listing set up under their own separate email address?

Is Google mad at me for redirecting...?
Hi, I have an e-commerce website that sells unique items (one of a kind). We have hundreds of items and the items are rapidly sold. Up till now I kept the sold items under our "sold items" section but it started to get back at me as we have more "sold" than non sold and we are having duplication problems (the items are quite similar besides to sizes etc.). What should we do? Should we redirect 100 pages each week? Will Google be upset with that? (for driving it crazy) Thanks
