Does Google penalize for duplicate blog posts?
-
Occasionally, I get asked by another blogger if they can repost (in full) one of our blog posts on their blog as a guest post. I've always been under the impression that Google penalizes this type of behavior, but I haven't seen any evidence. Is this true?

Would you recommend the rel=canonical tag for other page types as well, like informational pages?
For example, Website B has been given permission by the content-creating Website A to use A's original content on B's site. Should site B be required to include the rel=canonical tag on each URL where they are using copied content?
The content still exists on Website A - is using rel=canonical the best way to ensure they continue to get credit for it?

Brilliant, thank you!

This should answer your question. Kat rose is asking the question and rand fishkin is answering
The following quote is taken from http://www.katroseconsulting.com/search-engine-optimization/attention-bloggers-should-you-be-worried-about-duplicate-content/
KR: Does reposting blogs on other’s blog sites hurt search engine rankings?
RF: It is possible that if you re-publish your content on another site, it could rank in the search engines rather than your own, original version. A link back is often enough to negate this, but there’s also a technical way to make it work 99.9% of the time and that’s with the “Rel = canonical” tag (http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2009/12/handling-legitimate-cross-domain.html). If you use this (or have those blogs you guest post on use it), you can feel very confident that your own post will be the one to rank.
If you feel a little lost at the mention of rel: canonical tags, as many do, I’m going to break it down for you with the help of another great source—my friend and SEO guru, Tisho Richardson, Web Associate at ThomasNet.com (formerly the Thomas Register). Very simply, you put this type of html tag between the “head” tags on the blog post page of the ORIGINAL post; this way the search engines know that this is the one true original version and should rank this version above all others. This is an example of what a rel: canonical tag looks like behind the scenes of a website:
For example, with the first scenario I referred to–guest posting on another blog, the rel: canonical tag should appear on their site on the page where the blog is posted. In the second, where others are sharing your already published content, the tag should appear on your blog page (and always be sure that they link back to your original post).
If you have a wordpress blog, as I do, there is a plugin called “Canonical URL’s”. Once the plugin is installed, you will see a box under the post marked “Canonical”. In there you put the link to the post."

Duplicate Content for Non-SEO Purposes
Duplicate Content for Non-SEO Purposes There are a few layers to this question, but at the most basic level the question is... -Will having the same article (in the form of archived e-newsletter issues) on multiple different websites' newsletter archives HURT those sites? I'm fairly sure it won't HELP any of them in terms of SEO, but will having these back issues of their e-newsletters archived on their websites get them penalized? For the purpose of this question, these are not clients we are doing SEO for, just hosting and their e-newsletters. So it's fine if the archives provide no SEO benefit, we just don't want to leave them up if they will become LIABILITIES for the websites. -If having the same article in archived issues of e-newsletters on multiple different websites WOULD be harmful, would moving these archives to a sub-domain change anything or would it be best to simply take the archives down altogether? -Alternately, would spinning these articles make any difference in whether or not these sites get penalized? -Lastly, would spinning make the articles usable for archived e-newsletters for clients that ARE signed on for SEO services? I have a hunch about this, but I'd love to hear your expert opinions. Thanks!

Exchanging Guest Blog Opportunities - SEO Implications?
Haven't found a clear, recent answer on this. What are the SEO implications of exchanging guest blogging opportunities (in other words, we write an article for a partner blog with a backlink, and they write an article on on our blog with a backlink)? The partner site has a 57 domain authority and we have a 24 domain authority.

Duplicate Content- Archives
Our site is showing duplicate content for about 20 pages, they are all on the site as regular pages and in the "Archive" section. So the URL is different by one word but all the content is the same, is there a way to fix this and make it to where Google doesn't see it as duplicate content? Thanks!

I allow authority sites to republish my blog articles, which then outrank me
Hey everyone. This is my first question here, I apologize if it has been covered before. I have a health and nutrition blog [authority nutrition] that has been up since December 1st, 2012. I've managed to write quite a few viral articles which have given me a bunch of natural links and a domain authority of 49, which I think is pretty great for such a new site. Haven't done any link building and everything is 100% white hat. Getting good rankings and good traffic already, so I can't complain. My only (1st world) problem is that sometimes major authority sites (DA of 70-95) republish my content. I always say yes if they ask me first, but some of them just republish without even asking. My articles are always indexed on my blog before they get republished, but it doesn't seem to make a difference. These sites always clearly link to the original URL, but they often tend to outrank me for the keywords I was targeting in the articles. They tend to rank in the top 5, but my original article is nowhere to be found. I plan on continuing to allow these sites to republish as I get powerful links and good traffic from them, but it's a bit frustrating that I don't seem to get the credit as the original source. I've already set up Google Authorship, but it doesn't seem to help. Is there anything I can do to make sure Google recognizes my article as the original and chooses to rank my site instead of the authority site that simply republished my article?

Why my competitors posts rank well if those posts have lower SEOMoz?
Hello SEOMoz forum! I have a smart phone related blog, but it's not publish new related posts. I saw that most of my competitors rank well than me, even if they don't have a higher rank on SEOMoz (PA and DA). Most of their post's SEOMoz PA rank is lower than (1-5), but similar post on my blog have higher PA rank (10-15. Thanks!

Google RSS Feed News Feed To Inner Pages
Ive been working on a large ecommerce website that has thousands of pages, although we are working on adding custom content daily to the largest pages, we have "defaul content" with dynamic tags matching search query. Someone recommend we add a google Rss feed where they can also add some type of tag. Is this a bad idea? Ive asked in the past but my main concern is issue with duplicate content, It would be next to impossible to have all pages filled with custom content. Any help much appreciated!! Thank you!
