Duplicate Articles

We submit articles to a magazine which either get posted as text or in a flash container. Management would like to post it to our site as well. I'm sure this has been asked a million times but is this a bad thing to do? Do I need to a rel=canonical tag to the articles? Most of the articles posted to that other site do not contain a link back to our site.

The magazine has already given us the ok, like I said they're much more offline focused so it's more about what Google thinks. I think I agree about playing it safe with the canonical tag though. Thanks!
-
If it's really just for your own reference or limited use, I'd probably set up the cross-domain canonical and keep it off of Google's radar. Later, if you wanted to self-publish, you could remove that.
If it's just your site and theirs, it's probably not a high-risk situation. In some ways, it's more about the relationship. If your pages started ranking instead of theirs, I don't know if that goes against your general agreement with them. I'd probably play it safe for now.

Our site doesn't have the largest audience yet but management simply wants a place they can go or send clients to easily find everything in one place. The magazine is more for offline advertising but they post it online as well.

I'd just add to what Jason said, which I think is generally on-target. If the magazine really is the "source", then posting all those articles again on your site could look "thin" to both users and search engines. In general, you're not ranking for them now, so you probably won't lose out, from an SEO standpoint. There is some risk if you copy a lot of articles, though. You don't want to look like you're scraping your own content, in essence.
The cross-domain rel-canonical should remove the risk of any sort of search penalty or problems. So, again, it's a question of whether it provides value to your site.
At some point, you have to ask - would it make sense to only post them on your site? In other words, if you're building an audience, does it make sense to build it for someone else? Granted, that's a much larger business and marketing decision (far beyond SEO).

It's nots a "bad" thing to post the articles in two places, as this type of syndication is somewhat commonplace in the corporate world. Provided your site already as a lot of content and is generally good quality, there's no risk of a penalty for syndicating content.
However, I would encourage management to look at it from the user's perspective: If the user reads the article in the magazine, they're not going to find it very useful to see the same article again on your site. Conversely, if your website visitors aren't going to see the article in the magazine first, why send it to the magazine at all?
One solution is to quote a snippet of the original magazine article on your site, and then write a 200+ word summary or intro for the magazine article that perhaps summarizes the key points, introduces the article in a different way, etc., and then links to the magazine.
From a user's perspective, all the content you've published on your site and in the magazine is unique and potentially useful. From the SEO perspective, there's no possibility of an issue and - unlike syndication - you're adding a unique page of content to your site that is highly likely to be indexed and help you in the long run.
Syndication isn't bad, but you have to ask why you're doing it in the first place. It's often just as easy to create a short "What You'll Learn In This Article" intro on your site than it is to cut-and-paste.

Duplicate content site not penalized
Was reviewing a site, www.adspecialtyproductscatalog.com, and noted that even though there are over 50,000 total issues found by automated crawls, including 3000 pages with duplicate titles and 6,000 with duplicate content this site still ranks high for primary keywords. The same essay's worth of content is pasted at the bottom of every single page. What gives, Google?

Difference between anchor text pointing to an article in our section pages and the title of our article
My concern is described more in details in the following hypothetic scenario(basically this is the same method that CNN site applies to its site): In one page i have a specific anchor text e.g. "A firefighter rescued a young boy" and this one is linked to an article which if you enter you will see that it has a different title than the anchor text/short title that i mentioned above. So the internal titlte of the article is "A firefighte rescued a young boy in Philippines while it was rainy". I want to know whether this is a good SEO practice or not. Regards, Christos

Somebody took an article from my site and posted it on there own site but gave it credit back to my site is this duplicate content?
Hey guys, This question may sound a bit drunk, but someone copied our article and re-posted it on their site the exact article, however the article was credited to our site and the original author of the article had approved the other site could do this. We created the article first though, Will this still be regarded as duplicate content? The owner of the other site has told us it wasn't because they credited it. Any advice would be awesome Thanks

Plugin to duplicate CMS pages, changing the location
Hi all, We have recently noticed a rise in local business websites using a plugin to duplicate hundreds of pages changing only the location in the h1 tag and the page description, we're pretty sure this is a black hat technique allowing them to rank for all locations (although the duplicate page content must not be doing them any favours). An example of this is http://www.essexcarrecovery.co.uk We would like to know what plugin they are using as we think there may be better ways to use this, we may be able to create original location pages faster than we do now? Also why does not seem to be too detrimental to the businesses SEO as surely this method should be damaging?

On-site duplication working - not penalised - any ideas?
I've noticed a website that has been set up with many virtually identical pages. For example many of them have the same content (minimal text, three video clips) and only the town name varies. Surely this is something that Google would be against? However the site is consistently ranking near the top of Google page 1, e.g. http://www.maxcurd.co.uk/magician-guildford.html for "magician Guildford", http://www.maxcurd.co.uk/magician-ascot.html for "magician Ascot" and so on (even when searching without localisation or personalisation). For years I've heard SEO experts say that this sort of thing is frowned on and that they will get penalised, but it never seems to happen. I guess there must be some other reason that this site is ranked highly - any ideas? The content is massively duplicated and the blog hasn't been updated since 2012 but it is ranking above many established older sites that have lots of varied content, good quality backlinks and regular updates. Thanks.

Duplicate content for product pages
Say you have two separate pages, each featuring a different product. They have so many common features, that their content is virtually duplicated when you get to the bullets to break it all down. To avoid a penalty, is it advised to paraphrase? It seems to me it would benefit the user to see it all laid out the same, apples to apples. Thanks. I've considered combining the products on one page, but will be examining the data to see if there's a lost benefit to not having separate pages. Ditto for just not indexing the one that I suspect may not have much traction (requesting data to see).

Disavow tool for blocking 4 to 5 sites for Article Republishing
Am finding some very low authority sites (recently picked our articles from ezine and other article sites - written over a year back) and pasted on to there site. The number of articles copies are not 1 or 2, but more than 10-12 in all these domains This has also led to our anchor based url - backlink to us from them (a part of article). Have Wrote down to remove my author profile and articles - but there has been no response from webmaster of these sites. Is Disavow a right approach. The number of such sites are 4 or 5 in nature !!

Links In Blog Posts: 1 Paragraph VS. Full Article
Hey guys, I've been using an article network to post unique articles (not spun). Been posting 1 paragraph articles with 1 text link. Just wondering what the main difference would be if I were to post a full article with 2 or 3 text links vs 1 paragraph with 1 text link, besides the fact that you get more links and save more time writing only 1 paragraph. Will the full article with 3 backlinks improve keyword ranks more or not by much? Cheers!
