ASP.net to Wordpress - Conserving the Backlink Profile
-
I am converting a site from ASP.net to wordpress. The ASP site has a decent backlink profile. Most links are pointing to their homepage.
Is there anything I should be on the lookout so I do not lose their link profiles? I believe we are using the same server.
-
I agree. The client has been doing linkbuilding internally and adhoc. The anchor text is his website name. That is why he is bringing me into the picture.
Paul, Thanks for your input.

In that case, going forward, I would drop the .asp extension and 301 redirect, just ensure they're all working. Even if that means going through one by one.
Slightly off topic, but moving forward I would work on ways to increase the back links to internal pages.

Paul,
Thanks for the reply. I believe option 1 will be good for the home page, but interior pages end with an .asp extention, which complicate things. I usually set the permalinks to /%postname%/, but on this case it will not help me with interior pages.
I would say that 90% of the backlinks are to the homepage, so in that case the structure will be the same. I would probably 301 the interior pages.

Hi Roberto, to conserve your back link profile, you must conserve your websites archetecture. Most importantly your URL structure.
If you have a page on blue widgets, /category/blue-widgets.html that has 10 back links and your new url structure is /category/blue-widgets/ then you'll lose the back links and history. /category/blue-widgets/ will be seen as a brand new page.
Wordpress has various permalink options, but whether any of those fit in with your current structure is another thing.
This will mean you'll have to do 1 of 2 things.
- Create a custom solution, to ensure url structure is kept the same.
- Create 301 redirects from old pages to new pages.
Both solutions will work, but number 1 is definitely most preferable. But if all else fails, number 2 is at least going to forward the link juice to your new pages.
Hope that helps
Paul

Should I use a canonical tag or 301 with Wordpress posts?
Hi all, I'm trying to determine if canonical or 301 is a better way of handling an issue on my site. The Background I've got a Wordpress website where pages are in-depth reference articles and the posts are for short news blurbs. When I produce a new resource page, I also make a short post telling readers about the new resource. I use Yoast's Wordpress SEO plug in. Sometimes, Google will rank the 200 word post higher than the 2000 word resource page. I suspect that is because of the order in which they were crawled by Google, but I do not know for sure. The Question To make sure that the resource page is seen as the most important location on the site for the topic, should I use the canonical section in the Yoast plugin on the post to point to the page? Or should I wait, and after a few days (when the news blurb is off of the first page) just 301 the post to the page? Are there any link juice considerations when using the canonical option? Thanks for the help! Richard

Wordpress Robots.txt Sitemap submission?
Alright, my question comes directly from this article by SEOmoz http://www.seomoz.org/learn-seo/r... Yes, I have submitted the sitemap to google, bing's webmaster tools and and I want to add the location of our site's sitemaps and does it mean that I erase everything in the robots.txt right now and replace it with? <code>User-agent: * Disallow: Sitemap: http://www.example.com/none-standard-location/sitemap.xml</code> <code>???</code> because Wordpress comes with some default disallows like wp-admin, trackback, plugins. I have also read this, but was wondering if this is the correct way to add sitemap on Wordpress Robots.txt. [http://www.seomoz.org/q/removing-...](http://www.seomoz.org/q/removing-robots-txt-on-wordpress-site-problem) I am using Multisite with Yoast plugin so I have more than one sitemap.xml to submit Do I erase everything in Robots.txt and replace it with how SEOmoz recommended? hmm that sounds not right. like <code> <code>
