Local SEO Issue: Google Places Listing on Page 8
-
Hello,
I'm having an issue with a client's Google Places listing. It's showing on page 8 for one of the main keyword terms but their main site is on page 1. Having looked into competitors' places listings ranking above, I've ruled out the following;
- lack of citations
- inconsistent citations
- incomplete profile
- incorrect category listing
- details not matching places landing page
- incorrect location
- and any form of keyword stuffing
Other places listings ranking above have fewer citations, incomplete profiles, details inconsistent with their main site, one is no longer trading as a business and one has no website! In the past, our client had had two listings simultaneously but we addressed this waaaay back. Is it possible we could still be getting punished? I'm at a bit of a loss otherwise.
Any thoughts would be hugely appreciated.
Thankyou!

Hi Jasarrow,
Agree, this is a tough one. You mention that there was a duplicate listing way back when. Are you sure there was only one. Go to Google Maps and do a search for the business name, any variants on the business name that ever existed, a search for any addresses associated with the business in the past 10 years and any phone numbers associated with the business in the past 10 years. See if anything odd turns up, such as duplicates of which you weren't previously aware.
Martin has given you some very good suggestions, too!
Let us know how it goes.

Thanks Martin! You've raised a couple of things I hadn't thought of. I'll have a look into those. In the meantime, if anything else comes to mind, I'm all ears.
Cheers

This is a tough one, particularly as Google Places is one of big G's most inconsistent products. The additions I would have would be
- Are other websites listing the business in precisely the same location/address?
- Have you used microformats on the address on-site?
- Have you submitted a geositemap.xml file?
- Has the business got ratings and reviews from their customers/clients?
If I think of anything else I'll edit this post

How to add local
When you have reviews of local stores, how can you upload them to Google+ Local (former Google Places) so they will show up on stores/compagnies Google+ Local page? Like this one for example: https://plus.google.com/116525083278574120722/about?hl=nl. It says 'Revies from internet: schilder-adres.nl'. So schilder-adres.nl somehow imported there reviews to Google+ Local. How can you add your local reviews?

How do you fix a Google Places category issue?
I have a Google Places listing that has the category set to 'Garage Door Supplier', yet if you do a search in Maps on this same phrase and zoom into the area of the map where the business is located, it doesn't get flagged as a garage door supplier. If you just search on the business name, is does get flagged in the right location. I spoke with Google (yeah, an actual human) and they were baffled. The only suggestion they had was to try adding a few more categories to see if maybe that would force an update. Has anyone ran into this, and if so, did you find a fix?

Timeline For Local Prospect
Hi Mozzers, I need a judgement. I've been approached by a deck building company whose business is local. They do have an existing web site, but almost no content or indexed content. Their visibility online is very close to zero. They are also a seasonal business, with people getting interested in decks from April through June by which time they would be expecting a result. There is one very large competitor and many smaller ones. This gives me 6 months, starting from very close to scratch. Would you take it on? Discussion and debate welcome.

Australian Service that Allows you to Control all your Local Listings
Hey, After a few stumbles upon a variety of services that allows you to manage all your local listings from the one profile (the latest one was Yext.com). It got me thinking - is there an Australian equivalent? My research revealed nothing. Thanks.

Google local - is 7 pack really gone
According to a searchengineland post, Google has replaced "7 pack" results. But they are still appearing for local queries. Like for  query "pizza restaurant new delhi"  ( in Google.co.in ), i can still see 7 pack results. Has local and general search algorithms merged ?

How should I resolve duplicate Google Places listings?
I am doing work for a local business who has duplicate Google Places listings.  I would like some input from those with experience in this as to how I should go about consolidating these listings. Listing 1 created ~3 years ago by someone in the local business. They don't have the login/password info for this listing. listing has inaccurate info, including the wrong url (it points to their old website which is no longer active, but redirects to the new site) 124 reviews associated with this listing listing is on 3rd page of Local Business results Listing 2 one year old All listing info is current and accurate and I have the login info 18 reviews associated with this listing listing is on 6th page of Local Business results Up until a week or two ago Listing 2 was ranked between 1-3 in the local business results along side the map.  Listing 1 was ranked around #6.  I assume that the duplicate listings with their conflicting info (different url's associated with each) hit some tripwire in Google and they have now been penalized.  Does this sound correct? What is the best method for consolidating the two listings and reestablishing the ranking?  Here are my thoughts, please let me know if there is a better way... gain access to Listing 1 by having the business claim/verify the listing update all info in Listing 1 so that it is current and accurate deactivate and/or delete Listing 2 Is this the best course of action?  Thanks!
