Are Directory Links a Good Source of Branded Links?
-
I am trying to increase the number of branded links for a few of my sites since the links are too heavily weighted on anchor text. If so, would you recommend a service like Directory Maximizer?

Good quality directories are indeed a perfect fit for your needs, but I would not use that company or any company at all.
Do your own research for quality directories in your niche and/or locale/country/state, which will take a while, but IS worth it. Try not to use general directories, as there are so many directories out there it is hardly necessary. Do not use any kind of list made available anywhere, just check for "your niche directory" and if you find some high quality ones, do a related:domain.com search, both to check for new opportunities and to check what Google thinks of that directory. If related:domain.com doesn't return any results or returns websites that are not about that niche or locale, I would not submit to that one.
Then check if the exact page your link will be on is indexed in Bing, if it is, then it is pretty likely of good enough quality to carry some weight as Bing only seems to index high quality pages and leaves all the low quality out of the index, in stark contract to Google which indexes every crappy page their bot sees.
This way I find it still safe and functional to use directories, as Google sees that directory as part of your niche/locale AND Bing thinks the quality of the specific page is enough to be indexed. If both these conditions are met, the directory link will carry weight and because you can specify the anchor text, you will make your backlink profile more natural.
Many people are saying don't use directories, but don't believe everything you read, do your own research. If you do enough research you will find good ones and they will help you.

nope

I'd keep my distance. Google has been clamping down on paid directories, and any sort of automated service like what you're describing would be awfully risky.
-
I would stay away as well. The best way to get links is to earn them and links that are "given" away typically do not carry much weight as anyone could get them.
-
Under no conditions would I ever use any service which submitted links to my site to various directories. The only reason a site owner would do such is an attempt to manipulate search engine ranking, which is the definition of black hat SEO. You are likely to incur a penalty at some point with such a tactic.

I am looking for a software to keep track of the back links or link building
Hi Guys, I am very new hear. I just joined. I have a few websites that I need to manage. I am looking for a software that will allow me to manually add the links that I have been able to acquire. It would also be a bonus if it could search for the links to my site and to see if its still active. Because I have a freelancer working a few hours a week on link building and I need to keep track of the links. I am looking for something simple and good. Any suggestions? By the way, I used Raven Tools many years ago, and it had this feature. But since joining Moz, I don't want to be paying for 2 subscriptions. And I don't know if Raven still has this feature. Your suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you. Ryan

Links from sites with iffy link profiles?
So the site http://www.cadenas.de/ appears to have good decent scores from the various Moz ranks, but when I check out the site in OSE there are a lot of really sketchy links that jump out, online pharmacy/drug type links. I should also add that the negative links are seemingly going to a weird blog deep in the site and only appear when I select all links to the root domain in OSE. Everything about the site appears very legitimate except for the link profile which has me nervous. Would you guys pursue a link from this site?

What should I look for when choosing a good article directory for SEO purposes?
I have been writing SEO content for blogs for the past year or so, but I am fairly new to article directories. With SEO in mind, what makes a particular article directory valuable? Currently I'm using EzineArticles and Squidoo; I liked Ezine in particular because of their thorough review process. I saw that recently Squidoo also amped up their checks for original content as a result of Google's stricter policies. I was interested in using HubPages also since they are good about reviewing content. I'm just curious how much factors like this reflect on an article directory SEO-wise. Are there any additional factors that set a a good article directory apart?

Are you careful about linking back to sites that link to you?
Suppose that a trusted website added you to their recommended links page. Do you worry that linking back to them from a page on your site will diminish the value of the original link?

Panda Update: Isn't a link still a link?
I was doing some link building and some SEO's said that the Panda update affected many websites. I am going to use eZineArticles.com as my example. EzineArticles was affected by the Panda update and does not show up in the SERPs as much as before. But they still have doFollow Links coming from the articles I am submitting. QUESTION: Regardless if EzineArticles was affected by the Panda Update, isn't a "Follow Link" still a "Follow Link" OR am I completely wasting my time on this devalued website? Edit: Yes I know a PR 0 page is not as valuable as a PR 9 page. I am asking from the standpoint of the affected Panda Update domains overall.
