Linkspamming through references widget?
-
Dear Mozzers,
I have a question concerning a references widget. Im not sure if this should be seen as linkspamming.
The reason im asking this is when i check out some linkdata one referring site pops up 100's of times because they've put a widget on their site showing clients they worked with in slideshow form.
How is this handled by Google. Do they consider this spamming or do they just see this as one link? Im just curious how damaging this could be or how beneficial and what to hold in mind regarding these situations.
Thx!
Sander

Hi Sander,
Sitewide links, although not hugely popular with Google, do appear naturally in the link profile of quite a large number of sites, and you're not going to suffer any spam issues if these types of links only appear in moderation.
If one referring domain is sending links from hundreds of pages, then you're not going to have any problems. It would only become an issue if an unnatural proportion of your overall link profile was being made up of these site-wide links, as that's not natural.
It also depends on the type of site you're running, it's quite natural for Bloggers to have a higher % of site-wide links as they tend to be linked to via blogrolls, however this same % would look unusual for an ecommerce site.
In terms of benefits; sadly you won't receive the same link benefit of receiving 100's of unique links, in fact you'll receive no-where near this benefit. Essentially, as the anchor text, placement and style of the link is the same across the site, I would treat them as a single link.
Hope that all makes sense.
David

Do links on Reference.com and Ask.com count as backlinks?
Hi there Just had a quick question about links on Reference.com or Ask.com. I have been looking at my competitors link profiles to get ideas of who and where I should/could be linking from. One of my main competitors seems to have links on Reference.com and Ask.com which are being listed in there profile. Reference.com are dofollow. Our site is also appearing on these sites, but the links are being listed under our profile. We have been up and running for more that 3 years now. The obviously have high DR and I think must be a contributing factor to their rank, having looked at other links in their profile. It seems strange because I thought these sites are effectively search engines and therefore wouldn't count towards your backlink profile? Can anyone explain? Would be most grateful if someone can. Many thanks in advance. Clojo

Recommendations on SEO Tools, Strategies and References
Hello all, I have been doing SEO/SEM work on some sites I own for a few years but now I am in a position where I need to handle these tasks for a significant numbers of clients on a freelance basis. Obviously, this requires much more work and organization as well as some additional tools to help. I was wondering if the experts on here could help me with the following: Does anyone know of any online step-by-step guides or checklists that highlight a comprehensive SEO and digital marketing strategy? This could be helpful while trying to juggle multiple projects at once and provide a blueprint that I can follow and alter as I go. What free project management tools do you recommend? I was thinking of using Wunderlist, Trello or Evernote to keep track of projects, but there may be other suggestions I am not aware of. I have it in my budget to spend about $200/month worth of paid tools. Which tools are best for keyword research, backlink analysis, search rankings etc.? I am currently testing out Moz and SEM Rush, but would like a wide variety of information that helps me efficiently execute a plan but without too much white noise. What are the best paid (or free) tools to accomplish this? What are the best references for Q&As and reference materials on strategies, etc. for when I need to deep dive and do some learning on the fly? Besides this website of course. Thanks for any help!!

When writing content, is it good to reference wikipedia for some definitions?
Example...we write a unique article about the materials used in our products, giving a more in depth insight into the types of metals and minerals used in the products. Such articles are aimed at a small number of customers that ask more detailed questions about some of our material. In explaining some of these materials, we reference, and credit for, classifications used from the definitions given in wikipedia. The rest of article is ours and unique. Is getting these links from an authority such as wikipedia a good idea? Thank you.

In light of penguin - what are your thoughts on widget based link-building?
Hi all, I thought it would be interesting to see if people's perceptions of widget based link building have changed. By that I mean - Do you think it's ok to give somebody a tool to use oon their website with a reference to the creator of that tool or will that count as 'manipulative or unnatural' link building? I'll start the discussion off by saying... I think this type of link building is ok and legitimate as you are merely referencing the creator of the tool whose widget you are using on your website. My only caveat would be to ensure that the anchor text is not manipulative but relevant. Looking forward to hearing what you all think about this as I'm sure many people maybe put off by doing this.
