What are the SEO implications of URLs that use a # in them?
-
I have several clients who have begun to ask questions about sites that are designed to look like a single page. When you click on a link, the URL changes but it uses a # before (i.e. http://www.kelloggs.com/teamusa**/#**/teamusa/athletes/kerri-walsh.html. What are the SEO implications of having a page set up this way?
I noticed that Google has indexed this page but the indexed URL does not include a #. Is Google indexing a separate version of this page?
Any insights would be really helpful!
Thanks

they are not ranking, the pages that are ranking are here:
do a search for "kerri walsh kelloggs" and look at your URL. when you click on the URL you are being redirected in some fashion to the one URL with the hash.
Has this been like this for a while, because if this is a new implementation it may not be SEO friendly, that's why I suggest you talk to the engineering dept and find out how it was implemented.

Checked link: http://www.kelloggs.com/teamusa/athletes/rebe
cca-soni.htmlType of link: direct link
If google spiders these pages only to get tossed to other unindexable page (also I cannot see your robots.txt by the way) then these pages that are now indexed may wind up getting deindexed:
-
That URL is not even indexed in Google
And this is the code in the source of that URL
<title>Team USAtitle>
<meta name="<a class="attribute-value">description</a>" content="">
This is the real page though:
http://www.kelloggs.com/teamusa/athletes/kerr
i-walsh.htmlI checked to see if it is doing a 301 redirect, which it is not so for some reason they are appending /#/teamusa/
All athletes URLs are this way
for some reason (probably taking a short cut on installing the CMS that they built out to create these pages) someone in engineering decided they would do it this way. I would ask around the engineering dept and find out who set this up and maybe you can get some more insight into how it functions to get a better idea of the SEO implications.
As you can see, nothing past the hash is indexed in Google
If this helped you out, please mark the question answered thanks!

Thanks for the response Irving.
http://www.kelloggs.com/teamusa/#/teamusa/athletes/kerri-walsh.html
The hash is above in this location (teamusa/#/teamusa)
What is interesting is that in this example, individual athlete stories are ranking separately in the SERPs, despite the fact that they use a # to break up the URLs.

I don't see the hash tag (#) in your example, but anything in the URL from the hash tag and after is ignored. There are no negative implications other than maybe you would be better in breaking up that one page into a few individually targeted pages for better SEO.

Will adding /blog/ to my urls affect SEO rankings?
Following advice from an external SEO agency I removed /blog/ from our permalinks late last year. The logic was that it a) doesn't help SEO and b) reduces the character count for the slug. Both points make sense. However, it makes segmenting blog posts from other content in Google Analytics impossible. If I were to add /blog/ back into my URLs, and redirected the permalinks, would it harm my rankings? Thanks!

Negative SEO
I have got some idiot bombarding my site with spam links, most likely a negative SEO attempt. It started off very small and has ramped up to between five and 10 spam links per day. I think it may be having a slightly negative affect although difficult to tell. I can do a link cleanup, but I'm not sure that is a long term solution, I'm just going have to do it again in a few weeks time. Does anyone have any experience?

Rel Canonical tag using Wordpress SEO plugin
Hi team I hope this is the right forum for asking this question. I have a site http://hurunuivillage.com built on Wordpress 3.5.1 using a child theme on Genesis 1.9. We're using Joost's Wordpress SEO plugin and I thought it was configured correctly but the Crawl Diagnostics report has identified an issue with the Rel Canonical tag on the sites pages. I have not edited the plugin settings so am surprised the SEOMoz Crawl has picked up a problem. Example: Page URL is http://hurunuivillage.com/ Tag Value http://hurunuivillage.com/ (exactly the same) Page Authority 39 Linking Root Domains 23 Source Code Considering the popularity of the plugin I'm surprised I have not been able to find tutorials to find what I'm doing wrong or should be doing better. Thanks in advance. Best Nic

Should I rename URLs to use hyphens instead of underscores?
Hello. We are about to launch a redesigned and significantly expanded site that has traditionally used underscores as separators between words in its URLs. Would you recommend replacing all the underscores with hyphens? That would then require many 301 redirects to maintain any links that might be out there. Thank you!

Are there negative SEO implications to pages without any images?
Hi Mozzers, Do you think there are any negative effects of having no images on a page but several hundreds words of text? (There is a logo image and call to action buttons). Thanks!

I own a company for teams Ex myteams.com . A team registers and they get a site at team1.myteams.com. Content on each sub team site is mostly unique and I have several back links on each to the main site myteams.com. I also provide them with a unique URl team1.com will show team1.myteams.com. So couple questions As far as SEO should i be pushing the team1.com url or team1.myteams.com url? Is a link from team1.com or team1.myteams.com better for my site, their site or both How many back links should the sub sites have? Thanks

URL Structure Question
Hey folks, I have a weird problem and currently no idea how to fix it. We have a lot of pages showing up as duplicates although they are the same page, the only difference is the url structure. They seem to show up like: http://www.example.com/page/ and http://www.example.com/page What would I need to do to force the URLs into one format or the other to avoid having that one page counting as two? The same issue pops up with upper and lower case: http://www.example.com/Page and http://www.example.com/page Is there any solution to this or would I need to forward them with 301s or similar? Thanks, Mike

Sub Domain SEO
I am thinking to Add Sub Domains to get better rankings for Local Searches. So I will develop City Specific Sites with Specific Language. For Example qatar.wisnetsol.com. IT will be in Arabic. If my Good standing and Ranking on Google for wisnetsol.com will help my subdomain to rank better? if we setup wisnetsol.com/qatar, how it can target Qatar in Google Webmaster tools? Will links for qatar.wisnetsol.com and wisnetsol.com are seprate? What do you think about this strategy? Is it good or bad?
