Google ranks better apps over articles

Hello,
On my quest to recover from Goolge´s updates I found out that the serps show apps and software downloads ranking better than content (articles or similar) for one of my most popular keywords.
When the ads above the fold update hit my site (I can only assume that because of the date) I lost about 50% of my traffic). This keyword dopped from the first or second position to a steady fifth or sixth page position.
Today, I was trying to research which sites outranked me and to my surprise no result in the first 15 position was an article, just apps and software downloads.
It is not that is wrong. Let´s say that we are talking about an area similar to instagram software (although it doesn´t rank in this keyword).
I´m not asking about my site. I simply want to know if the web apps (social sites) and mobile apps are taking over the content in serps.
Is it that now you can´t go for a high place in the rankings (for certain keywords) if you are not a social site or an app?

Nope, it is not an application name. The keyword is broad and generic, but by no means is an application name.
I used to rank in the first places with content (a blog post) and now there are no articles ranking in the first 15 places, just web apps and social sites.
Let´s say that the keyword is more a "category", very popular in the last year or so.

when the search is for something like "app name" then the app shows up which is what search visitors would expect . But if you cater for reviews , video review , etc you can rank for those

My articles aren't ranking for keywords

Do references to neighborhoods and local attractions in body copy provide any benefit to geographic rankings for the city in which those neighborhoods/attractions exist?
A few years ago, some SEOs encouraged the mentioning of local points of interest in the copy of a page to improve localized rankings for the city in question. The argument was that a page mentioning "Wrigley Field" (in a natural-seeming manner) would be more likely to be ranked for "Chicago" searches. A similar argument promoted the use of maps (assuming they have a meaningful purpose) because of the neighborhoods, streets, etc mentioned on the map. Was this ever actually a benefit, and if so is it still?

Wrong page ranking for keyword.
I have a page i'm trying to rank for certain keywords around "emergency vet clinic" the page is domain.com/emergency-vet-care but my home page is the one that is ranking better and better. How can I get the other page to rank for e.g. "emergency vet care" , "emergency animal care" and the main page to rank for just regular vet care? My on page looks pretty good. I've also taken out most references to emergency care on the main home page except for the one link to it. Thanks

Influencing which page google chooses as the authority for a certain keyword
I have spent the last year optimizing my site for a specific keyword that I believed would do well with respect to conversions. The good news is that my efforts have somewhat succeed. I am now ranking second for a pretty popular keyword, and this effort has definitely increased my traffic. The bad news is that the target page that shows up for the optimized keywords isn't really the authoritative page on my site for the given keywords. As a result, it is my belief that my bounce rate is increasing and my conversions are decreasing. To be more specific, let's say I have optimized my site for the keywords "cool widgets". On my site, I am referencing "cool widgets" in key areas such as title, meta keywords etc. I am referencing the above both on my homepage as well as the cool-widgets page. So, http://www.mysite.com and http://www.mysite.com both contain pretty heavy optimization for "cool widgets". When a user searches "cool widgets", google is displaying mysite.com - however, i'd like it to display mysite.com/cool-widgets like all my competitors. Is there any advice or light the community can shed on how I might go about correcting this issue? I don't think I want to de-optimize my home page, as I am afraid I might lose that position and not have it replaced with the more relevant target page. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Specific Keyword Ranking Advice
Hi Folks, We're trying to optimize the page (http://alabu.com/goat-milk-soap/) for the keyword "goat milk soap". Our page used to rank #1 before Panda (actually our home page did, not the page I'm trying to optimize on now). Now we're around rank 25. I've followed all the guidelines for on-page optimization I know, and I've done everything I can think of. We're currently executing a link building campaign but that obviously takes time. Does anyone have any advice? Is there anything else I can do to improve our ranking? Thanks, Hal

So you have a keyword, and you want to see what page a competitor ranks
Say you are looking at a bunch of keywords and you think a competitor ranks for one of them. Is there any simple tool you can use to 1. put in keyword 2. put in domain of site RESULT - it tells you exactly where the site ranks. Like **The site UpperYupper.com shows up on Page 3 at position 35 for the keyword "yupper undies" **
