Links in the Classifieds
-
We rent apartments. One way we use to find clients is to advertize these apartments in Classifieds. Generally, we use free ads. Sometimes, for very popular sites ( like Kijiji), we pay so our ads can be seen first. Could this be a problem with Google?
Some sites send us clients, many of them never do. We keep putting ads there because of their PR. What is the worth of this kind of links?
Thanks for your answers.

Hi Caru,
Firstly, paying for advertising space isn't a problem with Google, it's what funds most web businesses, including theirs. The issue they have is with people purchasing links with the sole purpose of passing PageRank to manipulate the search results.
So in your scenario; paying for a premium classified ad to be seen first is just good business, and most sites will make these links 'no follow' anyway to give a clear indication to Google that it is an advertisement. Even if they don't no-follow, it will be pretty clear on any kind of manual inspection that you are paying for advertising rather than PageRank.
That's the gauge you need to use really, as without seeing each site you are talking about it's difficult to say. Have a look at each site subjectively, and ask yourself if you'd be comfortable in having a member of the Google Webspam team manually inspecting your link there.
If, like you say, it's purely for PageRank, then you might be setting yourself up for trouble.
It's a similar situation to directories. It's far too simplistic to say all web directories are dangerous, as some of them are genuinely great links from hand curated niche enthusiasts. It is the same with classifieds, there will be some great ones to be on for both marketing and SEO purposes, but there will be a great deal that exist solely for SEO manipulation and these are the ones you want to avoid.
In a way, I think you answered your own question when you said 'some sites send us clients, many of them never do. We keep putting ads there because of their PR'
So when you ask what is the worth of these links, I would say very little. They are unlikely to pass any PR, and they could potentially land you in hot water in the future. How could you explain in a reconsideration request to Google that you advertised on a platform that you knew no one visited?
Another quick thing to remember is that there's diminishing returns on links from any single domain. So once you have got a link or two from a domain, whether great or spammy, there is very little value from a purely SEO point of view from achieving future links.
Thanks
David

Disavow links from legit sites but have spammy link profiles?
I'm currently doing a backlink audit for our site with a LOT of backlinks. Some of the linking sites are legitimate business websites in our industry who have linked to us for a totally legitimate reason (we have good content!). However, these businesses themselves have a spammy backlink profile—that is, the only sites linking to that site are obvious link farm sites. Here is an illustration: spammyseolinks.com; payforseo.xyz; blackhat.ru ==all link to==> legitbusiness.com ==links to==> mysite.com Should I disavow this backlink? I guess it's not really giving me much SEO worth since it surely been branded a spammy junk domain, but then again, it's a real website that we've earned a link from because we're doing stuff the right way. Is it hurting or helping me?

If you discount a subscription when the client links to you, does that classify as a paid link?
For example, we all subscribe to MOZ, but if we received a 25% discount on our subscription if we linked back, would that be considered by Google as a paid link, or would it be seen as a sales tool / promotion?

Which Links to Disavow!
We just took over SEO for a new client who is being penalized for a bad link profile. They've asked Google to reconsider multiple times, and Google still claims that the links are bad. Because of this, and because I don't have direct access (logins, etc.) to what the former SEO did, I am considering using the disavow links tool. The most obvious links to disavow are a group of almost 1000 links that come from the same forum. However, when viewing the links on this forum they actually seem natural. People are reviewing the product (ipod cases), both negatively and positively. While this could have been an SEO tactic for link building, I don't want to disavow these links if they're not the problem, even though this domain is the source of almost all the low-quality links. Another site that has more than 200 links is Askives. Do any of you have experience with links from Askives, or removing these links? Thanks again!

Total Links vs Google Webmaster Site Links
I am interested why the numbers between SEOmoz and Google are so different. In SEOmoz we only show 17,000ish links from 190ish domains. In Google, we show 200,000+ links from 370 domains. Why is there such a dramatic difference?

Does a hashtag link pass the same amount of link juice as a link without a hashtag?
Example 1: link to: http://www.domain.com/#something-inside-the-page Example 2: link to: http://www.domain.com/

For a new site, does it matter which sites I get back links from first? I.e., are the first back links more important than later ones?
I've heard that when a site is new, the sources from which it gets its first back links are very important -- that the early links are more important for ranking than later links. Is this true. If so, what would be some good places to get these very first links? Thanks.

Link Farming
Are link farms still bad? I still am not sure about this question. I know that some people still do link farms. If they are bad, wouldn't a directory be considered a link farm? For instance I can get my site on a .EDU, but it will just be a list of links. Is that bad?
