Dealing with updating blog posts
-
I run a travel and culture blog which means that I write about a lot of upcoming events which recur each year. Usually I title (and slug) the page with the event name and date.
When it comes to update the article the next year, sometimes it's as little as changing the date, other times more has changed and it needs to be substantially re-written.
Until now, what I've done is update the title, content, and then re-posted (sometimes altering the slug where it's needed to be done). Sometimes it works fine and Google keeps me ranking well, but other times the changes dont get such a great response.
I have these options (as far as I can see). Which do you think is best?
1. To create a new article each year and put a message at the start of the previous one to say, click here to read about the 2012 event
2. To continue what I'm doing updating, changing the slug, and re-posting (ie changing the date).
3. To write a new article and insert a 301 redirect.
I need to make sure the article appears as a new article in my RSS feed and also on the homepage.
Look forward to your ideas!
Thanks

Wow - now I feel like my idea has been blessed by a god (Lead SEO at SEOMoz).....feeling quite chuffed actually!

That sounds like a great idea. I'll try it. I have a fair number of readers coming through the RSS feed so don't really want to lose that.
I'll try it and let you guys know!

I like Gary's suggestion - having one page for the event over multiple years means that you're not creating a new page every time, so the page can continue to benefit from the links it accrues year over year (changing the slug means the post loses its link equity every time).
I can't find any statement from Google saying that changing the publish date of a piece of content isn't allowed when the content is updated. I think in this case it should be fine since your intent isn't to manipulate - it's an update page and a new post.
The other solutions would be to redirect all of your past event pages to the new one every time you make a new one - this would preserve a portion of your link equity - or not to update the publish date (I don't know how much traffic you get from RSS readers so that would be your call).
-
Ok. Thanks anyway!
Anyone?

I wasn't aware the Google didn't like a modified "published date" perhaps someone with more knowledge on that than me can help? Sorry, I believe in "knowing your limits" and I have no personal experience with that being a problem (I am not saying it is not, just that I don't know!).

Thanks for the reply
I dont necessarily need to keep previous years content - the issue with that way is that to get the updated post to go into the RSS I'd need to play with the publish date and that isn't something Google likes, right?
Thanks

How about you maintain a single "page", i.e. a consistent URL for the "current year", so a slug of something like
-my-event-event-name (no dates or anything like that in the slug) then each year
1.) Put the new/revised content on that URL. Include the year in title, content, description etc.
2.) Create a new post and copy the last year's content to that one including the historic date and link to it (if you want) so a URL a bit like -my-event-event-name-2011
That way, you always have the latest content on a consistent URL. You can then maintain all the links you accrue over time to a single URL, just update content each year and store all of the past posts on "newly created" URLS each year. No matter whether they rank or not, presumably....

Should the same posts appear in both parent and child categories?
Hi all, For context, I'm trying to Silo my content more efficiently. I've just moved all content into their own SILO'd categories and removed them from duplicate categories. As such, posts now sit only in 1 category. My question here is: Should my posts be showing in both the parent category and it's sub category or just the sub-category? I've currently got this only showing in the sub-categories it's relevant to. For example:

How to deal with hundreds of externally-generated images with no alt text?
Hi all This is a good one. I work for a webdev company who has clients in the transport industry. Part of our work on their sites involves pulling in transport-related offers from a feed. This includes both text and images, which our site template turns into viewable pages. The problem is that Moz has flagged that these images don't come with alt text, and there are _hundreds and hundreds of them. _I can't add alt text to them all, there just isn't the time or resources. Besides, the list is updated frequently, and new images are pulled in. So... what do? Would it be prudent to noindex them all by default setting? I'm stuck! Many thanks,

Help! A site has copied my blog!
My site tanked on July 21 and I have been working so hard to bring it back up but nothing is working. Today I looked at "Links to Your Site" on Google Webmasters and I see a copy of my site on another URL. mysite.eemovies.org/mycategory/mypost The domain name is eemovies.org and then all my stuff is wrapped around it and all my content is there! How do I stop this?!

Blog.mysite.com or mysite.com/blog?
Hi, I'm just curious what the majority think of what's the best way to start a blog on your website for SEO benefits. Is it better to have it under a sub domain or a directory? Or does it even matter?

Blogs & CMS setup and integration
Hi Guys, I'm quite new to all things website wise. I understand the 'basics' of SEO (i think) and i'm alright with html but my experience stops there. Since i signed up to SEOMOZ, i've realised the importance of SEO and therefore our company has now employed 'an expert' to help us to go forward who happens to work for our web hosting company. Throughout the discussions, they strongly emphasised the importance of blogging and having a proper blog setup on our site and so we went along with the suggestion along with the SEO. Before we began, i went away and redesigned our site updating a lot of the content, the layout etc to basically give them a much better starting point because ultimately it would only benefit us. They have just started the work this month and to say i'm underwhelmed is an understatement!! With regards to the blog, as i didn't know what they were planning to do, i created three links at the bottom of our pages which looked like blog posts, a general blog page, and some blog posts which are all simple html pages. I assumed that they would then go away and create the blog thereselves and then obviously add it to our site. They have just come back now and said to me that as our site doesn't have a CMS, they will have to forward me the weekly posts and i will have to add them to the site myself and post them to our facebook and twitter pages. I am not particularly impressed with this as this is what we have paid just over £800 for which supposedly included them setting it up and managing it and did not include the SEO which is a lot of money for a small company as ourselves. What i wanted to know is that from our site as it stands now: http://www.customdesignedcable.co.uk, would it be difficult to include some sort of blog system that would integrate into our pages on the footer and the blog page or would i have to redesign the site through something such as joomla? I have never used joomla and i've only just found out that it exists. I'm asking on this forum as all of you guys know what your talking about and before i go back to them all guns blazing tomorrow, it would be great to be 'well up' on how difficult it would be and what the easiest ways would be to do it just to give me some ammo because i think they are talking out of there backsides! Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated!! Big Thanks Guys!! I look forward to hearing from you. Chris.

How to deal with tracking numbers in URLs
I am working on a site at the minute that has links like this: Jobs in London URL looks like: domain.com/jobs-in-london/ However, my developers insist that they need to use tracking codes, so everytime someone clicks on the above link, they are redirected (301) to a new URL that looks like: domain.com/search/1234567(unique search id) This is killing me when I am trying to get internal pages, like /jobs-in-london/ ranked. What to do?

Advantages of Wordpress Pages versus Posts
I have a number of SEO focused articles that I would like to post to our site to help with content and rankings. I am wondering the advantages of posting the content as a page versus a post within Wordpress. Or even vice versa.
