Is it OK to 301 redirect the index page to a search engine friendly url.

Hey, yep, simple for sure, but in this instance, just not the right thing to do.
In an ideal world, if you wrote a piece on big yellow underpants then the page name would include those keywords so...
http://www.yoururl.com/big-yellow-underpants.html
But, for the homepage, this is a special case, you have no page name as such, just the URL itself so in the 99.9% of cases where you don't have the keywords in the URL rewriting the / to a keyword driven page (or vice versa) is just not going to do anything.
This is a tiny thing, don't sweat it!

Hi Marcus,
It occurred to me, when tweaking my page score, that the only item I could not address was the keyword in domain. The keyword in question we currently rank 3rd.. So I am pondering on the little things and interested in the views of others.
As Kyle states using a 301 it is simple to do and internal nav is not an issue.
Thank you

Hi,
If you mean 301 http://www.yourdomain.com/index.html to http://www.yourdomain.com/ then that would be ok, otherwise your index page would already be the most user friendly URL.

Hey Butler
Why would you want to do that? Surely, you don't want a redirect on your index page? what could be better than http://www.yourdomain.co.uk/ ?
You are really not going to get a search hike from redirecting to
http://www.yourdomain.co.uk/keyword-goes-here.htmlThere is nothing really that wrong with this, but certainly, if you are doing it purely for a ranking boost, I would not bother and how would this work for internal navigation? Would the homepage links point to this page?
Maybe I am missing something here but as a general overview I see little point in doing this.
Hope this helps!
Marcus

Linking from high ranking sub domain pages to less ranking main domain pages to benefit latter
Hi all, We have our product guide pages on sub domain which are years old, so have some backlinks and high ranking for the beand related queries. Now we created new guide pages on our main website and we want these new pages to rank top beating the old pages from sub domain. Again we can't deindex or rel canonical to solve the issue as there are some part of users still using the old pages. We are planning to give a link from every old page of sub domain to same new page on main domain. Will this linking increases the authority of new pages technically and helps in ranking better? Like we give a link to "Moz guide 1" page to "Moz guide 2" page to rank latter better. Thanks

Search appearances drop, search traffic increases ... how to interpret?
I've just been comparing search appearances in Google Webmaster Tools with organic search traffic from Google and found that the two do not correspond at all. Why would this be? GWT says my appearances in search crash-dived around the second week of September (does this correspond with a Google algorithm update?), but my organic search data in Google Analytics for the same time period shows that search visits actually increased. Anyone else seeing anomalies like this? 525f2de7c58cc2-09483641 525f2e345acdf1-83344837

Are internal search meta keywords necessary?
One of my duties is to improve internal search results. From my reading, good site architecture and content is the way to achieve that. However, for example, are internal meta keywords necessary? I know they haven't mattered externally for a long time, but somebody in my department mentioned wanting this functionality in our CMS. I just want to make sure I'm not missing anything.

Google webmaster tool content keywords Top URLs
GWT->Optimization->Content Keywords section... If we click on the keyword it will further shows the variants and Top URLs containing those variants. My problem is none of the important pages like product details pages, homepage or category pages are present in that Top URLs list. All the news, guides section url's are listed in the Top URLs section for most important keyword that is also present in my domain name. How to make google realize the important pages for the important keyword?

New Search Engine.... Vanoogle.com
I'd like to see google start a new search engine. They might call it Vanoogle.com (Vanilla Google). This search engine would not be stinked up with social data, freshness inclusions, crap from my last query, skewed based upon my IP, warped because of my browser, targeted because of my cookies, no personalization, no image results, product results, none of that stuff. Ads are OK if labeled. I just want a plain vanilla search. Something that I know is "clean". Just like the good olde days. Millions of people will start using it right away. 🙂 Would you use Vanoogle.com?

Should I block non-informative pages from Google's index?
Our site has about 1000 pages indexed, and the vast majority of them are not useful, and/or contain little content. Some of these are: -Galleries

-Pages of images with no text except for navigation
-Popup windows that contain further information about something but contain no navigation, and sometimes only a couple sentences My question is whether or not I should put a noindex in the meta tags. I think it would be good because the ratio of quality to low quality pages right now is not good at all. I am apprehensive because if I'm blocking more than half my site from Google, won't Google see that as a suspicious or bad practice?1 -

Is it bad to use registered trademark symbols in page titles? Does this somehow hurt in search rankings?

301 redirect question
So I have an employer who owns a retail site and his category URLs are horrible. So, I am suggesting to him to create a new page with a pretty URL and 301 redirect the old page to the new page. I am suggesting this to him, because this will help increase CTR for the targeted keyword & help him rank higher for the term. He is apprehensive about this cause he thinks this will cause him to drop in ranking. Does anybody know any resources or have any past experiences that will back up my suggestion or his for that matter?
