Are a lot auf tag-sites in the index a bad signal for low quality? (Panda Update)
-
Hello everybody,
first of all please excuse my bad english. I'm from Germany - I try my best.
The case:
I have a Wordpress SEO project which rankings very well. A this moment I have all "archive sites" like "archive", "category" und "tags" indexed. I use the more-Tag for every archive/category/tag site - so duplicate content ist not really a problem, but in view of the Panda Update, which surely arrives in Germany soon, I wonder if all this Tag/Archive/Category Sites in the index maybe seen as low quality und can hurt the ranking of my whole site. Low quality because: With using the more-tag the site are just a list of internal links with content snippets.
I have 500 articles und 700 Tag Site (all in the index). So my fear is when google (with Panda Update) looks at my site und sees all this (maybe) low quality tag-sites in the index I get penalised because there is not a good proportion between my normal (good quality) Articles und the archive/tag sites. I hope you guys can understand my thoughts.
Do I have a legitimate fear that the mass of tag-site in the index could be problem? Are there any data from the USA, how blogs mit Tag-Site in the Index rank after the Panda Update or if sites which contains of internal Links mit content snippets - like these tag site - are low quality in Google eyes?
Or I'm worring to much?
Thank you very much!

Hi,
your are right Google rolled out the Pande Update worldwide, but only in english speaking countries. So here in germany there is not Panda, yet. But it will rolled out soon, for sure.
If someone reads this and has actually experience with blogs and indexed Tag-Site before and after the Panda Update, it would be great if you would share the information with me.
At this moment I'm thinking about setting all tag-sites to "noindex, follow". That could be a solution / prevention. As far as I understand the "noindex, follow" the internal link-structure shouldn't be hurt because Google follows all links as usual. Is that right?
Are there any experience on switching from indexed tags to "noindexed, follow" tag? Did that affects the Ranking in a negativ way?
Thank you very much, guys!

This is a question a lot of people have. First, let me say that Google announced that they rolled out Panda/farmer on a global scale at the beginning of last week. So if all this content was already in the index for an extended period of time and you did not see a significant drop this past week, it shouldn't be a concern in that regard.
What should be more of a concern is that many of those pages may be competing with individual articles on the site. It's not necessarily a problem, but could be. If you're happy with the rankings and the click-through rate to your site from organic rankings, I'd say don't mess with it. Just my take on things.

Hello Tompt,
thank for your answer.
No, duplicate content is not what I mean.
It's the point that these tag oder archive pages, which only contains of list of internal links and content snippels (like: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/popular/past-30-days) could be seen as low quality content, because its in fact just a mix of differant post snippets und linking titles and not a real article or one-piece of content.
1. Question: Do you think oder have data, if tag/archives sites like this (just internal links with little content snippets) are "low quality" in googles eyes, especialy after the Panda Update?
2. Question: If so, would it be a problem to have a great number of these pages in the index (700)? Especialy in view of the Panda Update? Because in fact I have more tag/archive pages than realy article pages (500) in the index.
If it is not a problem, it could stay as it is. If it could become a problem, when Panda rolls out in Germany - I may should change something or get these pages out of the index.
I realy hope, you understand what I mean.
Thank you.

Okay let me explain what I think you mean. You have lots of wordpress pages that essential display your posts in different ways, so categories, tags, archive etc, and you're concerned that they may be penalised for the duplicate content?
With a wordpress site it's fairly common to use the robots.txt to block crawler access to the archive, tags and category pages, which stops the problem completely, but does reduce the ways in which your pages can be accessed.
Does that sound about right?

Commas in title tags
Hello Guys, Thanks in advance for all who can help me with this I am helping a dinnerware company with their SEO. I told them to change their ambiguous title tags for more specific ones. However, they opted to create some title tags with 2 or three keywords separated by commas. I have attached an excel image illustrating their new title tags.. My question is, will this format be a problem with Google--penalties? The questionable title tags are highlighted in light orange. Thanks! lHH92

Index or No Index (Panda Issue)
Hi, I believe our website has been penalized by the panda update. We have over 9000 pages and we are currently indexing around 4,000 of those pages. I believe that more than half of the pages indexes have either thin content. Should we stop indexing those pages until we have quality page content? That will leave us with very few pages being indexed by Google (Roughly 1,000 of our 9,000 pages have quality content). I am worried that we would hurt our organic traffic more by not indexing the pages than by indexing the pages for google to read. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jim Rodriguez

Multiple and tags
It has recently come to our attention that some of the pages on our site have multiple and tags. I understand that this goes against best practices-- but I was wondering if anyone could tell me specifically how this could be impacting our site's performance and search rankings.

Changing site title
I'm wondering what the procedure and implications are of changing my sites tile? I realise that my Having my keyword in my sites title whilst chasing the same keyword in articles may be causing over optimization. The slug also takes on the article title too, in effect giving me the keyword three times before I've even written my article. Example below. Imaginary site title : soap benefits.org Article: The essential guide to making homemade soap Slug: The-essential-guide-to-making-homemade-soap As you can see, soap has now been mentioned three times, not including excerpt/meta description or image alt tags. As most of the article titles would contain my supposed keyword "soap" I'm thinking the best option would be to change site title with allinoneseo (that possible?) and change the slug to something relevant, giving me more room to escape over optimization. Does this sound sensible? I don't have that many articles so if I had to change other things it wouldn't be too much of a hassle. It seems a pity to loose my sites title I picked, but if I end up writing hundreds of articles this would be a problem. Help appreciated.

Index.php + external site added to end of URL
Good day, I have a domain http://www.ecofriendlylink.com. I am trying to resolve the Crawl Diagnostic errors on it. I have several Duplicate Page Content errors. Example 1: (The domain happynewyou is not mine, some Comments from them have been placed on my site. Ecoshop.php is a page on my site). URL: http://www.ecofriendlylink.com Duplicate Page Content: http://www.ecofriendlylink.com/www./happynewyou.com/ecoshop.php Referrer: None. Example 2: URL: http://ecofriendlylink.com/index.php Duplicate Page Content: http://www.ecofriendlylink.com/index.php http://www.ecofriendlylink.com/www./happynewyou.com/index.php Referrer: http://ecofriendlylink.com/ Example 3: is a different problem, but still a Dup Page Error. URL: http://ecofriendlylink.com/water.php Duplicate Page Content: http://www.ecofriendlylink.com/water.php Referrer: http://ecofriendlylink.com/ water.php is a page on my main domain. The www version and the non-www version, if this a problem and something I need to overcome? So please can you advise what I need to do to get rid of this strange external domain name + index.php (as per examples 1 + 2), and explain what I'm doing wrong with Ex 3. Thank you!

Title and Heading Tags
Firstly I would like to comment on how helpful this site is. I haven't posted much before but have been reading tonnes of answers for many months now and have been finding it really useful. I used the SEOmoz scanner and the main problem highlighted was duplicate content so I started to add 'customer product reviews' I had received and unique 'further information' to each page (hopefully this was the right thing to do to solve duplicate content! : ) ) Then I looked at heading and title tags. Currently I set title tags for each product page to be "Brand Name- Product Name" but after doing some research we are thinking of putting Keyword Description of Product | Product Name | Brand Name (around 60 characters long). So is this the advised thing to do and create unique titles that are relevant to each specific product page for over 200 pages we have? In addition, any advice on setting optimum tags would be great. We keep reading varying tips online. I gather ideally h1 needs to be a shorter keyword rich version of the title tag? Many Thanks
