Been Penalized, Starting from Scratch, Need Advice
-
Good Morning,
We've been penalized for unnatural links on the site : http://goo.gl/JgK1e
After attempting to contact many of the sites with links pointing at our site, and getting no response, we decided to start from scratch on a new domain : http://goo.gl/XUH3f
The first thing I did once the new domain was up was remove all of the unique content (text) from the original site and place it on the new site...
I am still having a difficult time getting the new site to rank in the SERPS.
Can you guys please provide pointers as to what steps should be taken to get the new domain, http://goo.gl/XUH3f a high ranking in the SERPS?
Thanks!!

But my site is not SEO related, and it is very hard to find sites that I can get links from in my industry.
-
If your site is seo related, yup (in fact I just left a comment). Also note that these backlinks are nofollow. Why would you think this is a bad place to leave a comment on?
If there were 6817684 comments with shitty, spammy links - I would say no.

Oleg,
One of the highest Domain Authorities in my OSE profile is for this site: http://blogs.law.harvard.edu/ahmed/ultimate-seo-checklist/
Are you saying that going ahead and commenting on this blog with my new domain as the URL is a good strategy? Isn't that part of what got me here in the first place?
-
Before you start building links again I recommend you invest in a 10 year old + domain, domain authority is a huge factor..
-
Thank you both! I will look into this right now.
Also, i'm open for anymore suggestions anyone has
thanks again!

Easiest way is to sort by domain authority or page authority and just go down the list. View each page > If the page's content has 1) real content, 2) low outbound links and 3) is relevant to your site, its probably a good link.
You can also write more unique content - although I'd build more links first since you say that your current site is all unique content already.

I recommend a link building strategy. You have a good site however it needs to have some authority (relevant quality links). There are many ways to build links to your site: Guest Blogging / Press Releases / Contacting a webmaster and giving some value in exchange for a link. Also take a look at your competitor links for whatever keywords you are trying to rank for. Type the keyword in google and take the top site paste it into OSE and evaluate these links. Are these links relevant? Do these sites have fresh content? Will your site / Can your site add value to the users of these site? If all three answers are yes, do whatever it takes to get those links or similar links.
Build a blog on your site and get others to blog on it using a good blog service (http://myblogguest.com), make sure that you only link to other relevant quality sites (sites that have good linking profiles).
Be sure to keep you link ratio natural (majority of your inbound links anchored with your URL/Brand name)
Create content on your blog that others will be interested in: Cute video of 20 kittens in a plastic bin... 5 reasons why our bins are indestructible... Yogi gets stuck in bin...
Create unique (entertaining, educational, funny) content that others will naturally link to and then share it with niche related people via social networks.
SEOmoz has hundreds of great link building strategy that you can utilize. Simply go to the search in the top right and type: link building or guest blogging or Press Release.

Thanks Oleg, but just out of curiosity, how do i know which links are considered good and which ones are bad?
Also, any advice other than building links?
Thanks,
-
Build more links? http://bit.ly/OAhzDI
The previous domain was also more keyword rich so it ranked easier.
Quick tip - go through the old site's backlinks, pick out the good ones, and ask the webmaster to change the URL to the new site.

How to unrank your content by following expert advice [rant]
Hi, As you can probably see from the title, a massive rant is coming up. I must admit I no longer understand SEO and I just wanted to see if you have any ideas what might be wrong. So, I read this blog post on MOZ https://moz.com/blog/influence-googles-ranking-factor - where the chap is improving ranking of content that is already ranking reasonably well. I've got two bits of news for you. The good news is - yes, you can change your articles' ranking in an afternoon. Bad news - your articles drop out of Top 100. I'll give you a bit more details hoping you can spot what's wrong. Disclaimer - I'm not calling out BS, I'm sure the blogger is a genuine person and he's probably has had success implementing this. The site is in a narrow but popular ecommerce niche where the Top 20 results are taken by various retailers who have simply copy/pasted product descriptions from the manufacturer's websites. The link profile strength is varied and I'm not making this up. The Top 20 sites range from DA:4 to DA:56. When I saw this I said to myself, it should be fairly easy to rank because surely the backlinks ranking factor weight is not as heavy in this niche as it is in other niches. My site is DA:18 which is much better than DA:4. So, even if I make my pages tiny tiny bit better than this DA:4 site, I should outrank it, right? Well, I managed to outrank it with really crap content. So, I got to rank two high-traffic keywords in #8 or #9 with very little effort. And I wish I stayed there because what followed just completely ruined my rankings. I won't repeat what was written in the blog. If you're interested, go and read it, but I used it as a blueprint and bingo, indeed Google changed my ranking in just a couple of hours. Wait, I lost more than 90 positions!!!! I'm now outside Top100. Now even irrelevant sites in Chinese and Russian are in front of me. They don't even sell the products. No, they're even in different niches altogether but they still outrank me. I now know exactly what Alice in Wonderland felt like. I want out please!!!!

Do we need to worry about external redirects?
Hi all, We always avoid internal redirects. Just wonder what if many of the out going links are redirecting to new links. I presume there is nothing wrong to host such links. Any ideas? Thanks

By Using interstitial (popups) on the webiste, will google penalize ranks for desktop and mobile both ?
We have implemented interstitials (pop-ups) on a website (Business Articles Website). The popups are basically used for getting leads from the website (using Signup popups). Before Popup implementation the traffic was steady, After the implementation, the traffic started to decay after a couple of weeks and due to the drop we disabled the popup from the website and initiated a force crawl and within next few weeks, we observed traffic gaining back to its normal trend. Within these timelines drop in desktop traffic was more and mobile traffic remain steady. As per Google guidelines, interstitials are more likely to be affected on mobile than desktop. But in our case, desktop traffic was hit more than mobile. So we carried out this experiment for 3 months. And we observed traffic decay and regain. Is interstitials the only culprit here (as the drop is only in desktop) or Can there be some other reasons as well for the traffic drop? bF7hc

Advice regarding latest Google Algo Update please, if possible...
Hi there I wonder if anyone can advise on this. Since the latest google update on 1st Sept or whenever it rolled out, we noticed an initial spike in hits on our site, which was great. However now we are noticing levels going back to where they were and less people visiting the site. It also seems to be very sporadic. So we have a period of say a couple of hours with no one on the site, then suddenly loads visiting. We have also noticed a big dip in enquiries, despite the site having roughly the same amount of visitors. All our stats on Moz, Webmaster Tools, Ahrefs, Serpfox and various other rank trackers are showing that we have had an increase in visibility on our tracked keywords. There is a definite spike on all, but where is our traffic and where are our enquiries? Usually we are able to work out where the problem is when updates occur but with this we have no idea. We are utterly baffled. Is this normal? Is this just fluctuations and will settle down? Has anyone else noticed weird things happening? If anyone has any ideas or experience of this then would be most grateful for any advice. Feeling rather desperate at the moment. Many thanks in advance. Clojo

A web audit for web traffic? Need answers please..
Hi, We are a PR agency based in Dubai and we produce a lot of web content. The website is build on ruby on rails and we have implemented keywords and SEO strategies but sadly the traffic pattern has not changed since the past three years. What surprised us today that we created a page 2-3 days ago for a client who is participating in Arab Health (a very prestigious healthcare event) and suddenly our page comes on top 3 on google.ae as well as google.com We are kind of convinced that there is something wrong with our code.. Do you think this could be a possibility? and the lack of change in the traffic pattern might not be an SEO issue but a code issue? What could be the possible reasons for this pattern? In such a scenario what would experts like you recommend we do? Do a SEO Audit? Web audit? code audit? hire a seo/ web / code consultant? Thanks - helpful answers are really appreciated and just btw if anyone feels they could professionally help us out of this mess, we are willing to work with him/her. Thanks in advance
