Satelite sites
-
Hi there
I want to drive traffic to one of our eCommerce sites by building satelite sites that focus on our chosen niche longtail keywords. so,
'where can i buy fake snow'
The problem is for other keywords ie. fake 'ice cubes', the com and co.uk are already taken.
So, my question is, should i settle for a .net / .biz / .eu etc. or choose the next best keyword/phrase that i can secure a .com/.co.uk top level domain name for?
Many thanks,
Ben

So, you want to create satellite websites and then get link back from those sites to your main website right? Sorry to say, but this looks like an attempt to game the SERP by artificially boosting ranking of your websites.
Moreover, it is highly likely that you are going to slap those satellite sites with thin content that nobody likes, believe me search engines have started hating them too.
Ok, let’s imagine that your main ecommerce website somehow manages to get some value from these inbound links coming satellite websites. But what if a Panda refresh gets the network down and the link juice that your main website has been getting so far will be smashed in a matter of second. All your hard work will go in vain. And please do not ignore Penguin. Your main website could come under the scanner of Google for building links unnaturally.
So, here is my suggestion. Rather than wasting your valuable time and money on building something worthless why not make your existing website AWESOME. You can build a great blog and starts sharing great content that will help you earn Links naturally. There are other things to do. Invest in making your website more conversion oriented, reach out to great bloggers and share your expertise in the form of a great article or tool or whatsoever.
In short, start adding value to your website rather than chasing the crappy links and you will be good.

The domain suffix is unlikely to have a big impact on this sort of tactic. If this is the way you want to go then just get whichever name is available.
In truth though I'd really weigh up the tactic. The return from this approach is likely to be low unless you are set up to pretty much automate this at scale (which I am guessing from the question you are not - and is the sort of tactic very much frowned on at SEomoz).
There are two extremes in building such satellites. One is just to throw up some cheap thin content and rely on the exact domain match to do the work. This is not without cost, but not too expensive. However you have a risk attached as this is very likely to come under google definition of spam do could result in your main site getting penalised if you do a lot of it. The other approach would be to build a quality site that can stand on it's own merit - which obviously costs more. Also don't forget to factor in that you will still need to be link building and doing SEo on the satellite sites too.
Considering that an extra site means an extra large step in the conversion process (you have to get users from site A to site B before purchasing and you will lose a lot of them at that stage), you need to be really sure of the returns.
Many people here will tell you that what you are talking about is spam and you should therefore instead concentrate on building a better core site.
I'd say that what you are suggesting is unlikely to be the best return on your time and you should therefore concentrate that time and effort in to the core site unless you are really sure about what you are doing and understand the risks involved.
Your product is interesting enough that you can probably get much better links much more affordably through a content marketing approach and get more traffic and sales as a result. Start a thread here asking for content marketing ideas for a fake snow company and see the responses you get. I reckon it's a dream product to promote!

Are bloggs published on blog platforms and on our own site be considered duplicate content?
Hi, SEO wizards! My company has a company blog on Medium (https://blog.scratchmm.com/). Recently, we decided to move it to our own site to drive more traffic to our domain (https://scratchmm.com/blog/). We re-published all Medium blogs to our own website. If we keep the Medium blog posts, will this be considered duplicate content and will our website rankings we affected in any way? Thank you!

Do you see sites with unfixable Penguin penalties?
Hello, We have a site with 2 Penguin update penalties (drops in traffic) and one quality penalty (another drop in traffic) all years ago, both just drops in rankings and not messages in Google Console. Now that Penguin is hard coded, do you find that some sites never recover even with a beautiful disavow and cleanup? We've added content and still have some quality errors, though I thought they were minor. This client used to have doorway sites and paid links, but now is squeaky clean with a disavow done a month ago though most of the cleanup was done by deletion of the doorways and paid links 9 months ago. Is this a quality problem or is our site permanently gone? Let me know what information you need. Looking for people with a lot of experience with other sites and Penguin. Thanks.

International web site - duplicate content?
I am looking at a site offering different language options via a javascript drop down chooser. Will google flag this as duplicate content? Should I recommend the purchase of individual domains for each country? i.e. .uk

Can links from an old site raise DA for other site? Or just unethical?
So this may be an odd question. So a competing company went out of business. Their domain name is now available. So just for research purposes, would you ever or would it be unethical for a person to buy an expired competing domain name, and point it to another site to collect their link juice? The site was only a DA of 10, but not sure if one - its bad to buy a competing companies expired domain - and two - even though in the same industry, this would be bad to point it to another site or create a site from it. Just curious your thoughts.

How do I know for sure if my site has been slapped?
I'm new to this SEO business - and I focus on inbound marketing. My client's site is www.SubconsciousMind.com. Just a few weeks ago it was showing in the top search results for several major keywords. Now, it has disappeared all together and there are competitors showing that have very little SEO (metatarsi not set up properly, etc.). So, I know there has to be an opportunity. Some obvious things:

There aren't a lot of links and the majority seem to be bad (bad linking farms)
Social media is set up by a robot
Articles are poorly written obviously ONLY for SEO My client hired a SEO company awhile back to get results, not understanding black hat / white hat and it worked for several years. Now - it is really hurting her. The sites she is linking to doesn't have any contact info to get the "unlinked." I've read I can use the disavow tool. I asked her if she got anything from Google about "being slapped". She doesn't even receive the emails to her site because she trusted someone else to set it all up. Should I rebuild from scratch? Any recommendations? We are funning adwords now as a quick fix.0 -
Do sitewide links from other sites hurt SEO?
A friend of mine has a pagerank 3 website that links to all my pages on my site on every page of his site. The anchor text of all these links are the title of each page that it links to. Does this hurt SEO? I can have him change to the links to whatever i want, so if it does hurt, what should i change the anchor text to if needed? Thanks mozzers! Ron

Should I 301 Redirect a Site with an 'Unnatural Link' Warning?
Hey Fellow Mozzers, I have recently been approached by a new client that has been issued with an 'Unnatural Link' warning and lost almost all of their rankings. Open Site Explorer shows a ton of spammy links all using main keyword anchor text and there are way too many of them to even consider manually getting them removed. There are two glimmers of hope for the client; The first is that the spammy links are dropping off at a rate of about 25 per week; The second is that they own both the .com and the .co.uk domain for their business. I would really appreciate some advice on the best way to handle this, should I :- Wait it out for some of the spammy links to drop off whilst at the same time pushing social media and build some good clean links using the URL and brand as anchor text? Then submit a recosideration request? Switch the website over from the .com domain to the .co.uk domain and carry out a 301 redirect? Switch the website over from the .com to the .co.uk without doing a redirect and start again for the client with a clean slate? I would still register an address change via Webmaster Tools. Add a duplicate site on the .co.uk domain. Leave the .com site in place but rel="canonical" the entire domain over to the .co.uk Any advice would be very much apprecited. Thanks
