Different Title and Meta Title Tag
-
Do the search engines rank based on the meta title tag or the title tag?
What if you have a different meta title tag from the title tag?
Edited:
I have edited to clarify my issue. Having a different meta title tag from the title tag.
Thank you for those who have answered the question so far.

Interesting. Thanks!

Hello ASMC, I believe you are asking whether search engines look at the title tag
<title>This is the title</title>
or if they look at a meta title tag
The answer is that search engines look for the first example, the title tag. The second example is not a normal meta tag and does not need to be used.
I hope this answers your question.

Thank you all, I was referring to different title tag and meta title tag
Thanks,

Search engines look at your: URL / title tag / H1 / Body but do not place your exact keyword in each of these because that is over optimizing.
If you keyword is "blue cheese" your title can be "blue cheese is my favorite dressing."
As far as meta description: this does not help SEO with spiders however having your keyword within this will result in having that term bold when searched.
Meta keywords are outdated, Google does nor count them and Bing consideres this a form of spam. Also having meta keywords will givre your competition your terms.
Just use this tool: http://pro.seomoz.org/tools/on-page-keyword-optimization/new
I would recommend focusing on one keyword per page. Two max..

Search engines consider your title tag one of the main factors when crawling your site. There are a few different meta tags so I'm not sure which one you're referring to, however if you're talking about meta description then this one should be different but targeting the same keywords as you have in your title tag. If you make them identical it will look suspicious to a search engine. Take a look at Google's SEO starter guide:
Pages 3-5 talks about Title and Meta description,

Do you say Browser Title or Page Title?
I have seen much more use of "Page Title" of late....in fact hardly any of "Browser Title" except by some folks who are using a very old CMS. We need to go with one at my workplace to avoid confusion. My vote is Page Title. Thoughts? Thanks, Tim

Writing the perfect Meta Descriptions
I have a lot of Meta Descriptions to write and so this got me thinking, what is the 'perfect' way to write one? I tend to stick to 165 characters and I now write them with the aim of getting the prospect to 'click through' and visit the intended page, I don't 'keyword stuff' though if I can include a keyword in the flow of the description then I will... In this example, I need to write a Meta Description for a 'worldwide cruise destination' called Okinawa which is the largest in a group of islands between Japan and Taiwan... Here is my Meta Description effort; Okinawa is the largest of the Ryukyu Islands, steeped in history but has developed into a captivating worldwide cruise port with a wonderful and relaxed culture. How would you rate my effort in a score of 1 - 10? How would you write it better? Thanks for your time! Andy

Problem with meta title
My web is http://www.canexel.es, is supported by wordpress and I'm having some problems with the meta title. Google SERPS shows “Canexel: Casas de madera canadienses“ when I config the snipped to show “Casas de Madera canadienses – Canexel” I use SEO yoast plugin. I dont know why it is showing the name of the company followed by a colon at the beginning. The home page is the only one that is having that problem. Thx!

Title tag and URL Optimization
Hello guys, Should the URL reflect the structure of the title of a webpage? This is the old title with the Url: 20mm O/D Black Polypropylene LSZH Flexible Conduit 100m Coil /Product/20mm-o-d-black-polypropylene-lszh-conduit-100m-coil/1352 I changed the keyword position and it looks like this: 20mm Flexible Conduit | O/D Black Polypropylene LSZH | 100m I kept the same Url for now, should I change that too? Thanks

The actual title tag is different from the one showing in SEOmoz
Hello all I was looking at the crawling report for my project, I have noticed that there are so many duplicate titles in the "Duplicate Page Title" report, I checked the title tag for one of the titles (for this page) manually (in the page code), and it was showing like this: <title></span><span>Interviews | TechSparks</span><span></title> where it's showing in the "Duplicate Page Title" report like this: Interviews | TechSparksEasyRotator Preview Hovering over the tab in the browser shows the title as I mentioned first, and searching Google for this page shows the title like the first one I mentioned too. Do you any clue why that is happening? fUbtXe6 fUbtXe6.png

Duplicate Page Title
I have a dating site, it's got a lot of duplicate page titles, most of them are the language buttons for the users to view the site in there language. but I think it's obvious that the buttons don't have anything to do with it. I'm thinking that page tittle is basically a description of what the site is. like for an example "online-dating" is this it? please tell me in terms for a dummy, how to fix it.
