No reply from Google despite reconsideration and hard work!
-
Hi everyone,
I hope someone can help.
The site www.danbro.co.uk suffered a manually penalty in April.
It had a number of poor quality sitewide blog links and the link profile looked (and still does despite a massive improvement) unnatural.
The work to over turn the penalty
Since then 80% of the spammy blog links have been taken down. the other 20% of sites simply do no respond to requests (these sites were documented).
The webmaster also has started building up more natural links as 95% of the anchor text could be classed as 'money keywords'.A low % of links included the brand name at all.
A number of requests have been sent ( i told the site manager this should have been avoided but hay-ho). The last request of which i assisted them with was sent last week. The reconsideration was extremely detailed and documented all link removals and links that were still live yet poor quality.
some questions
-
Its been a few months since the penalty - should a brand new site be launched?
-
If option '1' was to be implemented, is a 302 re-direct a feasible option as the site's content is vast? will this pass on the penalty?
-
in your opinion Is the websites link profile the root of this penalty?
-
If point '3' is true would you a) start a fresh site or b) continue working on balancing the link profile?
Any help or case studies would be tremendous
thanks in advance

Steve, sorry, I completely misread that original question, if it is a manual penalty, things are somewhat worse and recovery, in my experience is a whole lot harder. You will have to be absolutely fastidious in your approach and get rid of everything manipulative or start over.
Sorry buddy, skim reading whilst stuffing my face at lunch time!

Hey Steve, it is difficult, especially if you inherit these problems with a new client and there is just not a great deal of case study data out there.
You just need to be brutal in your clean up and attempt to remove anything that is obviously manipulative and as Robert mentioned above, if you have links from other sites that are clearly spam honeypots for Google then get them removed.
Best of luck

Hi Marcus,
thanks for your answer.
with regards to the 24th - The site was actually hit on the 12th April.
The link profile is deffinately alot better than 3 months ago however it still looks unnatural.
The only issue is where to allocate resources and time...
should time be spent making a more natural looking profile (google may not even respond or take notice) or is it easier 'burining the house down' and starting a fresh.
it is a difficult one.
thanks for your time - much appreciated
-
Arghh, looks worse than I thought. OpenSiteExplorer won't expand the linking sites for me at the moment but if it is this rotten, then a clean up is just not always practical let alone possible.
This is the client needs to be transparent and if they can't be, then you need to dig through the link profile to guide your hand.
If they are doing .edu and .gov link building then this is a true case of manipulation and as Robert says above, fixing it will likely be pretty difficult.
-
Steve,
I feel your pain, but....
Thinking about your situation, I went to the site and used OSE to see what your links look like. The first red flags I see came within 5 seconds of opening OSE and clicking on linking domains. You sell accounting software for contractors and, while that can be rather broad, the first couple of domains that stand out are links from NASA and the University of TX.
There were so many links from the NASA blog I did not bother looking for yours and assumed a lot of BS was there. For UT, I started scratching my head as the blog post was around a UT student visiting Germany. For your comment a "student" named Alex is gushing about Germany being efficient but, the name is actually a link to your home page.
So, what is Google seeing?
My guess is that if I can hit two really questionable links, one a .gov the other a .edu in the first few seconds and Google is really digging, you are going to have to work very hard to fix this. Otherwise you are going to have to reform your site by doing as you state above and rebuild.
My only incredulousness comes from you stating that Google does not respond. I would have thought they would have sent you the does not meet Google Quality Guidelines.....resubmit request for reconsideration... email.
Good Luck,
-
If you have done a lot of work and have a manual penalty then play it out a while longer and see what happens. If you simply don't get a response or the link profile is just too rotten to repair then it may be time to burn the house down and start again.
I have had a quick look at the link profile and have seen a lot worse. You have two main keywords targeted with thousands of links from only a handful of sites so if you have got rid of a lot of sitewides, it may be a lot more balanced. That is not taking
Your questions.
1. If it was on the 24th then the link profile is highly likely
2. I have to admit I am not sure about this one. In theory, it should not, but I would really want to cut all ties with the previous site so you may need to deindex all that content first. In reality, the 302 redirect is for content that has been moved temporarily and not for redirects that are temporary so this is not really the correct usage of the redirection.
Possibly a custom 404 with some links to the new site and a change of URL in webmaster tools may be a better option but I am unsure of any best practice here and you may have to ride out a bit of turbulence when first moving.
3. Yep, the date alone tells us that to a degree of certainty and it's further compounded by the use of the sitewides etc.
4. That's not a five minute answer and really depends on whether there are any natural and quality links or is it 99% junk? If the latter, then with the rumoured update to penguin getting more aggressive, then it could be time to move on.
What i would do is compare against other people in your niche. Look at some market leaders, figure out what a normal link profile looks like and determine how close you are to that.
Hope this helps
Marcus

Questions on Google Penguin Clean-up Strategy
Hello Moz Community! I was hit with a REAL bad penalty in May 2013, and the date corresponds to Penguin #4. Never received a manual spam action, but the 50% drop in traffic was very apparent. Since then, I've had a slow reduction in traffic, to where I am today... which is almost baseline. Increases in traffic have not occurred regardless of efforts. In researching a little more, I see that my old SEO companies built my links with exact keyterm matches, many of them repeated over and over, verbatim, on different sites. I've heard two pieces of advice that I don't like 1) scrap the site, or 2) disavow all the links. I would rather see if I can get the webmasters to change the link to something generic, or my brand name, before I do either of these. To scrap my site and start new will be damn near impossible because I'm in an extremely competitive niche, and my site has age (since 2007), so rather work with what I have. A couple of questions, for folks who are in the know about this penalty, if I may: This penguin update, #4, on May 22nd, was it ONLY because of the link text? Or was it also because of the link quality? None of the updates before it harmed me, and I believe those were because of the quality? Could it be for links linking from my blog to my site? My blog (ex. www.mysite.com/blog), has close to 1,000 blog posts, and back in the days I would write these really long, keyword stuffed links leading to www.mysite.com. I've been in the process of cleaning these up, and shortening them, and changing them to more generic (click here's), but it is a LONG and painstaking process. If I get webmasters to change text to just the url or brand name, that's better than disavowing, correct? As long the linking site has a decent spam score and PA/DA on OSE? Is having SOME exact anchor text okay on these links? Is it just the abuse that's the problem? If so, how many should I leave? (like 5 max per keyword?) Or should I just change to the url, or disavow altogether, any and all links that have exact keyword matches? I've downloaded my link profile from OSE and Majestic, and will do so from Ahrefs (I believe it is)? Does Webmaster Tools have any section that can help give me insights into the issue? If so, can you point me in the right direction? Can I get partial credit, for some work done? For instance, say a major update, or crawl, happens, and I've only fixed/disavowed 25% percent of the links by then, is there a possibility that I get a small boost in traffic? Or am I in the doghouse till they are all fixed? Say I clean/disavow everything up, will my improvement be seen in the next crawl? Or the next Penguin update? As there may be a substantial difference in time there. 😎 I see AHREFS, has some information on anchor text... any rules of thumb as to percentages of use of a certain anchor text, to see if I'm abusing or not, before I start undertaking all of this? Thanks! Could the penalty have "passed" altogether, and this is just where I rank? Thanks guys, but the last thing I want to do is ditch my site... I will work hard on this, but need some guidance. Much appreciated! David

Does including your site in Google News (and Google) Alerts helps with SEO?
Based on the following article http://homebusiness.about.com/od/yourbusinesswebsite/a/google-alerts.htm in order to check if you are included you need to run site:domain.com and click the news search tab. If you are not there then... I ran the test on MOZ and got no results which surprised me. Next step according to :https://support.google.com/news/publisher/answer/40787?hl=en#ts=3179198 is to submit your site for inclusion. Should I? Will it help? P.S.

How does google recognize original content?
Well, we wrote our own product descriptions for 99% of the products we have. They are all descriptive, has at least 4 bullet points to show best features of the product without reading the all description. So instead using a manufacturer description, we spent $$$$ and worked with a copywriter and still doing the same thing whenever we add a new product to the website. However since we are using a product datafeed and send it to amazon and google, they use our product descriptions too. I always wait couple of days until google crawl our product pages before i send recently added products to amazon or google. I believe if google crawls our product page first, we will be the owner of the content? Am i right? If not i believe amazon is taking advantage of my original content. I am asking it because we are a relatively new ecommerce store (online since feb 1st) while we didn't have a lot of organic traffic in the past, i see that our organic traffic dropped like 50% in April, seems like it was effected latest google update. Since we never bought a link or did black hat link building. Actually we didn't do any link building activity until last month. So google thought that we have a shallow or duplicated content and dropped our rankings? I see that our organic traffic is improving very very slowly since then but basically it is like between 5%-10% of our current daily traffic. What do you guys think? You think all our original content effort is going to trash?

Missing Suite Number on Google
I realized that we are missing a suite number. It is not on the website or the recently updated Google/Bing/Yahoo revisions I did. Should I go and fix? Or should I go and adjust old listings. Does a suite number matter in the NAP?

So What On My Site Is Breaking The Google Guidelines?
I have a site that I'm trying to rank for the Keyword "Jigsaw Puzzles" I was originally ranked around #60 or something around there and then all of a sudden my site stopped ranking for that keyword. (My other keyword rankings stayed) Contacted Google via the site reconsideration and got the general response... So I went through and deleted as many links as I could find that I thought Google may not have liked... heck, I even removed links that I don't think I should have JUST so I could have this fixed. I responded with a list of all links I removed and also any links that I've tried to remove, but couldn't for whatever reasons. They are STILL saying my website is breaking the Google guidelines... mainly around links. Can anyone take a peek at my site and see if there's anything on the site that may be breaking the guidelines? (because I can't) Website in question: http://www.yourjigsawpuzzles.co.uk UPDATE: Just to let everyone know that after multiple reconsideration requests, this penalty has been removed. They stated it was a manual penalty. I tried removing numerous different types of links but they kept saying no, it's still breaking rules. It wasn't until I removed some website directory links that they removed this manual penalty. Thought it would be interesting for some of you guys.

How to make Google forget my pages ?
Hello all ! I've decided to delete many pages from my website wich had poor content. I've made a php 301 redirect from all these old pages to a unique page (not the home page, a deep page). My problem is that this modification has been made a week ago and my position in the SERPs have crashed down... What can I do ? I believe that I'll get up again when Google will see that these pages don't exist anymore but it could take a long time 😞 (these page are in the Google cache with a date older than my modification's date) I've read somewhere that I should put a link to the destination page (where old pages are 301 redirected) but I don't understand how it could help... Can someone help me ? Tell me what I've done wrong... These pages were very poor and I've deleted them in order to boost the global quality of my site... It should help me in the SERPs, not penalize me...
