SEO and marketing for a company that doesn't want to promote their primary website
-
Hi All!
One of my new clients is in a semi-grey-hat industry, and is in perpetual danger of having their real websites (of which they have several), blocked by the Chinese firewall (which is where their target market is).
So their idea is to use neutral sites to write information (Squidoo, article site, maybe a stand-alone WP site with a few pages) and promote those pages. The idea being that China is less likely to block those sites, and then the link to the actual website from those pages could always be changed if China blocks the website listed.
I'm a little dubious as to how feasible this is - how do you promote a Squidoo page? Or an article on an article site for semi-competitive keywords? Besides on-page SEO (which may not be enough), is there anything you can really do post-Penguin?
If anyone has any ideas as to the above - or as to how else to effectively market sites when you can't market the site and brand directly, I'd be very happy to hear.
Thanks!

Hi Aviva,
I would use a company like http://www.writeraccess.com/ they are very inexpensive and you can get somebody to write your entire website with perfect grammar and spelling emphasizing the words you chose to emphasize and they will make sure in is 100% new fresh content. I would go about it this way than writing it myself I personally do not consider myself a good writer and employee company as well as writers access to do my blogging and website text creation.
I hope this is been of help.
Sincerely,
Tom

Hi Thomas,
Thanks for the response. It's definitely a good idea - I'm just not sure how much really good content I can write (or can be written) on their topic, still kind of promoting their sites, without looking spammy. (Which will be an effective deterrent to people sharing and linking.)
I'll start thinking more about it, though. Maybe I can make it work somehow.
Thanks,
Aviva B

Number 1 do not use squido it is spamy
I know exactly what you have to do. You should do a lot of blogging even no follow links have weight. If you build a WordPress site with a blog and actually try to fill it with somewhat decent non-recycled content always fresh and better than obviously it has been. You can then create a social media buzz about it then get people to naturally link to your interesting articles. It's inbound marketing and its effective and the Chinese won't ban you. I hope I have been of help to you. Of course you want to index the site and do all be on page SEO needed however you obviously will need links and links coming from social media matter to Google and will matter to your site
Sincerely,
Thomas Von Zickell

Law Firm Website Completely Switching Marketing Focus - How to Best Handle
Hi Moz Community, Thanks in advance for the help! We have a law firm client interested in fully switching their SEO marketing from Criminal Defense to Personal Injury. Our client no longer wants any business for Criminal Defense cases. Background Info: The website for the last 10 years has focused on Criminal Defense (and ranks well). Over the last couple of years we have introduced Personal Injury content on the website and achieved some decent rankings as well. In order to make the website less relevant for Criminal Defense, it had crossed our minds to de-index these specific Criminal Defense pages but still leave them present on the website. Question: Would you recommend de-indexing all of the pages at once or done in a gradual manner? Our concern it that doing it all at once could affect the overall domain's authority more sharply and harm rankings for any other keywords not involving Criminal Defense.

I'm doing an SEO-audit for a client. When I'm checking if the rel=canonical tag is in place correctly, it seems like it: view-source:http://quickplay.no/fotball-mal.html?limit=15) (line nr 15) Anyone seing something wrong with this canonical? When I perform a site:http://quickplay.no/ search, I find that there's many url's indexed that ought to have been picked up by the canonical-tag: (see picture) ..this for example view-source:http://quickplay.no/fotball-mal.html?limit=15 I really can't see why this page is getting indexed, when the canonical-tag is in place. Anybody who can? Sincerely 🙂 GMdWg0K0 -
Can't diagnose this 404 error
Hi Moz community I have started receiving a load of 404 errors that look like this: This page: http://paulminors.com/blog/page/5/ is linking to: http://paulminors.com/category/podcast/paulminors.com which is a broken link. This is happening with a load of other pages as well. It seems that "paulminors.com" is being added to the end of the linking pages URL.I'm using Wordpress and the SEO by Yoast plugin. I have searched for this link in the source of the linking page but can't find it, so I'm struggling to diagnose the problem. Does anyone have any ideas on what could be causing this? Thanks in advance Paul

Why isn't link velocity in the 2011 Ranking Factors?
How come there's no reference to link velocity in the Search Ranking Factors, 2011 or prior? We know that we have to continue building links for a client even if they're already doing well, not just because of the competition nipping at their heels but because if we stop they slip down anyway, so we know that stopping link building will often times have an adverse effect... meaning link velocity right? So how come there's no mention of it? Just curious 🙂

How 'Off Topic' can I go - site wide?
Hello, I am currently number 1 for a competitive keyword - so don't want to push the wrong button and self destruct! My site is highly focused on one relatively narrow niche with about 50-60 pages of content bang on topic. I was wondering if Google will discredit my site in any way if I start adding pages that are** 'loosely related' **to the overall theme of my niche. Some of them are what you might call sister concepts with maybe one mention of my target keyword in the body..... Does the algo value what percentage of the whole site's content is on/ off topic? If so how important is this as a factor? Thanks a lot
