Why a terrible website ranks number 1??
-
Hi,
I'm an SEO newbie.
A couple of months ago I launched a new E-Commerce website for my client :
http://www.corporategiftsshop.co.za
The site has over 1000 pages indexed in Google. I've done some link building and on-page SEO for the keyword terms :
corporate gifts
promotional items
promotional giftsCurrently the website ranks number 31 for "Corporate Gifts" in Google.co.za
What I cannot comprehend, is that the site which ranks number 1 is simply shocking!
http://www.corporategifts.co.za/
It is a single, static webpage with all links pointing to another website : http://www.promogifts.co.za
It has 1 back link and a page rank of zero, yet it still ranks number 1? Can anyone give me a reason or some insight into this as it has me stumped..
Some of the other sites in the top 5 are also poor, yet they still rank high.
Our site has a Page rank of 5 and 67 unique domains which links to it ( according to our webmaster tools ) yet it still only manages a 31 ranking??
Any advise would be greatly appreciated as I need to make sense of this, otherwise hang up my SEO gloves..
Regards,
Marnus.

I know this is an old thread but both these websites are on the 1st page now hahahah

Very good question,Marnus.I also checked other websites such as giftwrap is also ranking high but has a low DA.
-
Hi,
If you have built good links then wait for some days Google will crawl your site. I suggest you should do local listing in .co.za and get backlinks from local directories of .co.za. SO it will good for your site for getting top rank.
-
Thanks for the suggestions. I've built numerous links from Relevant .co.za sites, but I see Google has not indexed them as yet. Not sure hat I can do to speed things up a bit? Still blows my mind that such a site can rank number 1. I thought google now rewards content and quality?
-
Ya it is redirecting, it open with or without www. but see with www it has 10 links and domain authority is also higher than yours and 67 % links comes from .co.za domain. so my suggestions are that if you increase keyword density and add that keyword in H1 tag then you can also beat that site. Try to do relevant and dofollw link building. If you get backlinks from .co.za domains the it will also boost your ranking.

I checked without the WWW. I checked OpenSiteEx sing the full domain www.corporategifts.co.za and it returned only 3 domains which link to the site
-
Hi,
My Client Website is www.corporategiftsshop.co.za
The site which ranks number 1 is www.corporategifts.co.za ( Does not return any data in OpenSiteExplorer )
-
<cite>www.corporategifts.co.za/</cite> <cite>are you check this domain ??? because i cheeked this domain and it has many indexed pages and 10 backlinks. I also check in</cite> ahrefs.com it has 8 Dofollow links.
-
I checked www.coprorategifts.co.za in OpenSite Explore and it says :
No Data Available for this URL
Site only has 2 Pages indexed by Google as well..
-
hi,
Please check both site in opensite explorer www.coprorategifts.co.za has 67% links from .co.za domain and you get only 33% If you get relevant backlinks and dofollow links then you can also beat that site. Also check keyword density of that site is has higher keyword density for corporate gifts compare to your site. They put keyword in title and also in H1 tag so Google gives more preference to that site compare to yours. Do link building which have .co.za extension so it will help you to rank higher.
-
Hi,
Yes it does, but that still does not explain why the site www.coprorategifts.co.za ranks number 1 for the term "corporate gifts"
Surely having just the keywords in your domain name cannot be the main ranking factor? I thought Google did not give that much weight anymore?
Regards,
Marnus.

Hi,
Please check these three sites in opensite explorer. Your site has less backlinks and domain authority and social presence then this site http://www.promogifts.co.za/ and it contains keyword in it's domain.
http://www.corporategifts.co.za/ This site contains corporate gifts keywords in their domain thats why it has top ranking. If you search with corporate gifts shop then your site appear on 2nd position.

Does an EAT score on my YMYL site impact my rankings?
I've read some conflicting information on YMYL and EAT. If the Google Quality Raters are out there reviewing YMYL pages and scoring them on EAT, does that site's score have an impact on that page's/site's ranking?

Is it possible (or advisable) to try to rank for a keyword that is 'split' across subfolders in your url?
For example, say your keyword was 'funny hats' - ideally you'd make your url 'website.com/funny-hats/' But what if 'hats' is already a larger category in your site that you want to rank for as its own keyword? Could you then try to rank for 'funny hats' using the url 'website.com/hats/funny/' ? Basically what I'm asking is, would it be harmful to the chances of ranking for your primary keyword if it's split across the url like this, and not necessarily in the correct order?

18 years later, Page Rank 6 Drops to 0, All +1s disappear, Scrapers outrank us
18 years ago I put up our first website at http://oz.vc/6 Traffic grew and our forums reached hundreds of thousands of posts, our website had a page rank of 6 and our forums and other content areas ranked 5-6, the others usually 4-6. Panda 2.2 came along and whacked it. No measures recommended by SEO experts and the Matt Cutts videos even made a dent, including some pretty severe measures that were supposed to make a difference. Bing and Yahoo traffic both grew since Panda 2.2 and only Google kept dropping every few updates without recovery. Several few weeks ago Google provides the ultimate whack. It seems every page other than the home page has either a PR of 0 or not generating any PR at all. Every +1 disappeared off of the site. Now three pages have +1 back and the entire guide section (hundreds of articles) are still missing all +1s. I discovered two scrapers, one of which was copying all of our forum posts and ranking a PR 2 for it (while we have a zero. They were taken down but I still can't imagine how this result could happen. I am going to have an RSS feed aggregator taken down that is ranking a 2 and knows we can't prevent them from taking our Wordress feeds and storing them (we use them for areas on the site.) How can Google provide us with a zero page rank and give obvious scrapers page rank? What should have been years worth of awesome rich added content and new features was wasted chasing Google ghosts. I've had two SEO people look at the site and none could point to any major issue that would explain what we've seen, especially the latest page rank death penalty. We haven't sold paid links. We have received no warnings from Google (nor should we have.) The large "thin" area you may see in a directory were removed entirely from Google (and made no difference and a drop in Google doing the "right" thing!) Most think we have been stuck for a very long time in the rare Google glitch. Would be interested in your insights.

Why do in-site search result pages rank better than my product pages?
Maybe this is a common SERP for a generic product type but I'm seeing it a lot more often. Here is an example SERP "rolling stools". The top 4 results are dynamic in-site search pages from Sears, ebay and Amazon (among others). I understand their influence and authority but why would a search return a dynamic in-site SERP instead of a solid product page. A better question would be - How do I get my in-site SERPs to rank or how do I get my client's page to rise above the #5 spot is currently ranks at? Thanks

Webmaster Tools Crawl Stats Drop - Ranks Dropped too
Hello, So I have a situation I haven't seen that happened today. I checked in on my keyword rankings, and all seemed to drop off the rankings in one day. Even googling my domain name, I'm not the first result (when I always have been with multiple sublinks under). There were no unusual errors in the webmaster tools, no issues "Fetching as Google". The only thing I can find is in Crawl Stats, my "Kilobytes downloaded per day" and "Time spent downloading a page (in milliseconds)" dropped a lot in the last day or so (by about 90%). Has anyone had this happen? Any ideas for how to bounce back from this? Domain referenced is mediamegamall.com Thanks!

When did Google include display results per page into their ranking algorithm?
It looks like the change took place approx. 1-2 weeks ago. Example: A search for "business credit cards" with search settings at "never show instant results" and "50 results per page", the SERP has a total of 5 different domains in the top 10 (4 domains have multiple results). With the slider set at "10 results per page", there are 9 different domains with only 1 having multiple results. I haven't seen any mention of this change, did I just miss it? Are they becoming that blatant about forcing as many page views as possible for the sake of serving more ads?

Do you believe CTR affects rankings
As you know, Google tracks CTR on keywords for your website visible through google Webmaster Tools. How much if at all do you believe this affects your rankings on the tracked keywords?

SEO updates and rank changes
We have been updating page titles and meta descriptions for a client (not changing ANY links and the content we are replacing is "fluff," no major keywords or any relevant information) yet in the past few weeks, rankings have plummeted. I used the SEOMoz grader to check and make sure we have the keywords in there, in the right places for the updated page source info, and we're getting A's yet for those same keywords, the website is nowhere to be found. For example for the phrase "organic t shirts," we get an A for this page: http://greenpromotionalitems.com/organic-t-shirts.htm but when searching organic t shirts, no Green Promotional Items... Ideas?
