Why are our sites top landing pages URL's that no longer exist and retrun 404 errors?
-
Digging through analytics today an noticed that our sites top landing pages are for pages that were part of the old www.towelsrus.co.uk website taken down almost 12 months ago. All these pages had the 301 re-directs which were removed a few months back but still have not dropped out of Googles crawl error logs.
I can't understand why this is happening but almost certainly the bounce rate on these pages (100%) mean we are loosing potential conversions.
How can I identify what keywords and links people are using to land on these pages?

I'm glad to help.
If the visits are not organic or referral then I wouldn't worry too much about this.

Hi,
Really appreciate all the info, a great help.
I have looked hard at Google Analytics and cannot see any referrals from these links or organic search results. Also having checked Webmaster tools there are no impression for these pages so it's i am clueless as to where they are coming from. One URL has had a least 30 to 40 visitors to the site this month with 100% bounce rate.
An odd one I think.

Hi,
If Google Analytics says that the visits are direct then these visits did not result from a link on a different website. A direct visit is from a person either typing in the URL directly into the browser, or clicking on a PDF (or word doc) link.
You might have some promotional material, a white paper or someone is just typing in the URL. Use your advanced segments to double check and make sure that the visitors are not landing on your site from referral links or organic search results.
If you really, really want to make sure that these pages are not ranking you can link your Google Analytics to your webmaster tools then check to see if there are any impressions for those pages. If there are no impressions then those pages have definitly been de-indexed.

Hi,
Thanks for your help, just what i was after. Interesting the first landing page i selected show no keywords set and traffic was direct, so I can only assume that there is a link on some website/blog that people are using to enter our site via that url. What do you think?
-
Hi,
You can identify the keywords that people are using to land on those pages by digging into your analytics. I'll explain the process assuming that you are using Google Analytics:
Once you are on the correct profile in analytics click on the "content" tab, then click on "site content". You will now be able to click on "all pages" on the "site content" dropdown. In the filter box type the page url and press enter on your keyboard. Click on the correct URL in this filtered list. Just above the list you will find a tab called "Secondary dimention", select this and then select "Traffic Sources" and then "Keywords". This should give you a list of all the keywords that have been used to find those pages.
As for the links, instead of selecting "keywords" under traffic sources, you can select source and it'll give you the domains that the visitors are being referred from.
Tip: When looking for links you can use advanced segments to only include referral traffic
Please let me know if this works or if you have more questions.

Magento 1.9 SEO. I have product pages with identical On Page SEO score in the 90's. Some pull up Google page 1 some won't pull up at all. I am searching for the exact title on that page.
I have a website built on Magento 1.9. There are approximately 290,000 part numbers on the site. I am sampling Google SERP results. About 20% of the keywords show up on page 1 position 5 thru 10. 80% don't show up at all. When I do a MOZ page score I get high 80's to 90's. A page score of 89 on one part # may show up on page one, An identical page score on a different part # can't be found on Google. I am searching for the exact part # in the page title. Any thoughts on what may be going on? This seems to me like a Magento SEO issue.

What's the best way to A/B test new version of your website having different URL structure?
Hi Mozzers, Hope you're doing good. Well, we have a website, up and running for a decent tenure with millions of pages indexed in search engines. We're planning to go live with a new version of it i.e a new experience for our users, some changes in site architecture which includes change in URL structure for existing URLs and introduction of some new URLs as well. Now, my question is, what's the best way to do a A/B test with the new version? We can't launch it for a part of users (say, we'll make it live for 50% of the users, an remaining 50% of the users will see old/existing site only) because the URL structure is changed now and bots will get confused if they start landing on different versions. Will this work if I reduce crawl rate to ZERO during this A/B tenure? How will this impact us from SEO perspective? How will those old to new 301 URL redirects will affect our users? Have you ever faced/handled this kind of scenario? If yes, please share how you handled this along with the impact. If this is something new to you, would love to know your recommendations before taking the final call on this. Note: We're taking care of all existing URLs, properly 301 redirecting them to their newer versions but there are some new URLs which are supported only on newer version (architectural changes I mentioned above), and these URLs aren't backward compatible, can't redirect them to a valid URL on old version.

I have a lot of spammy links coming to my 404 page (the URLs have been removed now). Should i re-direct to Home?
I have a lot of spammy links pointing at my website according to MOZ. Thankfully all of them were for some URLs that we've long since removed so they're hitting my 404. Should i change the 404 with a 301 and Re-Direct that Juice to my home page or some other page or will that hurt my ranking?

Weird 404 URL Problem - domain name being placed at end of urls
Hey there. For some reason when doing crawl tests I'm finding pages with the domain name being tacked on the end and causing 404 errors.
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | Jay328
For example: http://domainname.com/page-name/http://domainname.com This is happening to all pages, posts and even category type 1. Site is in Wordpress
2. Using Yoast SEO plugin Any suggestions? Thanks!0 -
What's the best way to check Google search results for all pages NOT linking to a domain?
I need to do a bit of link reclamation for some brand terms. From the little bit of searching I've done, there appear to be several thousand pages that meet the criteria, but I can already tell it's going to be impossible or extremely inefficient to save them all manually. Ideally, I need an exported list of all the pages mentioning brand terms not linking to my domain, and then I'll import them into BuzzStream for a link campaign. Anybody have any ideas about how to do that? Thanks! Jon
