E-Commerce Categorization

I'm working on an e-commerce site that currently has about 50 root categories and growing, with no sub-categories. They are all linked from the sidebar of every page and all the products are pretty related. They could probably be sub-categorized in to 5 root categories.
At want point does categorization become too flat?

Making such radical changes is always something that shouldn't be taken lightly, that's for sure. And if it's done, you'll need to have a spreadsheet where you can enter a column with all the page names, a column with their current URLs, and one with the new URLs, because implementing 301 Redirects is critical but can be a nightmare otherwise.
What it comes down to is evaluating the value of other SEO (on-site, link-building, and social) that can be done to improve things as compared with architectural changes. Judgment calls. Not always fun.

Yeah that makes sense. Unfortunately this site is built in ProStores, which gives me no control over the URL structure. It makes me hesitant to make category changes that are going to recreate the URL structure.
ProStores is a nightmare.

Categorization becomes too flat at the moment you lose high quality visitors. Since the site started out flat, there's no way to tell what that point it. The only way to determine if it's already too flat is to refine it. I always recommend to clients that it's best to have no more than eight to ten top level categories, and only have sidebar navigation that links to sub-categories within the specific category you're in, or at most, those, then below them, two or three additional links to similar top level categories.
The reason for this method is because in the flat model, you have no way of communicating to search engines what the real relationship separation is. This in turn dilutes the ability to drive more strength to the highest level categories. The end result then is a situation where your top level categories don't do as well for their most important keyword phrases, the sub-category page phrases also suffer, and in turn, individual product pages do as well.

How to index e-commerce marketplace product pages
Hello! We are an online marketplace that submitted our sitemap through Google Search Console 2 weeks ago. Although the sitemap has been submitted successfully, out of ~10000 links (we have ~10000 product pages), we only have 25 that have been indexed. 301 redirection for e-commerce website
Hi moz community, I am the web agency for a e-commerce website. Its current domain is https://www.liquorland.co.nz but now all the e-commerce part will be moved to a sub-domain https://shop.liquorland.co.nz. There are thousands of e-commerce current being indexed in Google (i.e., 15,500) plus they also have a mobile version of the page like /mobile/default.aspx. Is it necessary to 301 redirect all the pages? We are afraid it may slow down the website because the request will go through thousands of filters. Is it OK to just redirect the main categories? Blog on subdomain of e-commerce site
Hi guys. I've got an e-commerce site which we have very little control over. As such, we've created a subdomain and are hosting a WordPress install there, instead. This means that all the great content we're putting out (via bespoke pages on the subdomain) are less effective than if they were on the main domain. I've looked at proxy forwarding, but unfortunately it isn't possible through our servers, leaving the only option I can see being permenant redirects... What would be the best solution given the limitations of the root site? I'm thinking of wildcard rewrite rules (eg. link site.com/blog/articleTitle to blog.site.com/articleTitle) but I'm wondering if there's much of an SEO benefit in doing this? Bay Area E-Commerce SEO Firm Needed
So my e-commerce site recently got hit badly with the latest Penguin update. Traffic is down by 60%. We were using a cheap Indian SEO firm who did get us great results but it seems they was a lot more spamming than I realized. I am now looking to clean up my backlinks and create a new relationship with a local business so I can be more hands on with my SEO. Does anyone have any recommendations for SEO firms that have experience in e-commerce? Ideally somewhere in the Bay Area or even Sacramento?

Is it possible to export Inbound Links in a CSV file categorized by Linking Root Domains ?
Hi, I am performing an analysis of the total inbound links to my homepage and I would like to have the total amount of inbound links categorized by the Linking root domains. For example, the Open Site explorer does offer the feature to show you the Linking Root Domains to your page. Then when you click on the first Linking Root Domain, it also shows you the Top Linking Pages ( Which means all the pages that link to your page from this particular top level domain) Now I would like to export this data to a CSV file, but open site explorer only exports the total amount of top level linking domains. Does anyone has a solution to this problem ? Thank you very much for the help in advance!

What's the best format for a e-commerce URL product page
We have over 2000 non branded experiences and activities sold through our website. The website is having a face lift with the a new look and a stronger focus on SEO. As part of this, I am keen to establish what the best practice is for product based URLs. I've researched the market and come up with a few alternatives that are used: domain/category/subcategory/activity_name domain/activity_name/category/subcategory/activity_reference domain/generic_term/activity_reference/activity_name domain/category/activity_location/activity_name Activities are location based but the location can change (say once every 2 years). Activity names, category, subcategory and activity_reference rarely change. Are there any thoughts/ research on the best method? (If there is one) Many thanks in advance for your insights.

I have a site that has both http:// and https:// versions indexed, e.g. https://www.homepage.com/ and http://www.homepage.com/. How do I de-index the https// versions without losing the link juice that is going to the https://homepage.com/ pages?
I can't 301 https// to http:// since there are some form pages that need to be https:// The site has 20,000 + pages so individually 301ing each page would be a nightmare. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
