Wordpress initial setup
-
Hello
I am going to create a new WP site.
Basically, I would like to have your suggestions for the initial setup (checklist) in terms of SEO.
For example: xml sitemap, robots.txt, .htaccess, permalinks, www or no www, etc
Basically, I would like to start in the right way
Any advise would be appreciate.
Thank you so much
Andy

I would agree with Marcus on this one. The first thing that you would want to do is plan ahead think about your niche and think about who you are advertising too.
I would definitely suggest creating a wire frame of what your website will look like, what pages will social media links(if any) will be on your website.
The most important thing you can do is plan accordingly and create a wire frame then a sitemap, and go from there.

Hey Andy
Right, the first step is some good honest planning and think about the content you will have on your site. You want to organise the content and decide upon the keywords as you would for any other project and build the structure of your site around that. You may find that tags or categories work better but that is the basics.
Then, you want to install the Yoast Wordpress SEO plugin. This will do most of what you need out the box but you can then decide which taxonomies (types of categories) that you need or more importantly don't need. If this is a single user blog, then you will not need the author pages indexed and likewise, you may not want to index date based archives as they are again just duplicates of the homepage on a single user blog.
I would love to give a more detailed and generic answer but as ever, it really depends on the content but the Yoast tool is a great start. Combine that with the campaign manager here to identify duplication and other issues as you go then you can tweak and refine as you go.
Hope that helps
Marcus

Best practice to handle Wordpress Categories/Tags
Hello Mozzers, I am sure a lot of people here are using wordpress. How do you handle Categories & Tags? I came across that they produce a lot of duplicate content in the google index. My website is brand new so I don't have any traffic yet, how would you handle it? noindex, follow? Or block /categories/ and /tags/ from robots.txt? Probably I am completely wrong with both ways? I am grateful for your answers! Best regards!

Website Redesign - Blogger To WordPress Platform URL Structure
I am transferring a website (www.EXAMPLE.com) From Blogger To Wordpress. Currently, the website content is specific to cover the Colorado Market. In the near future, I plan on covering the same market in other state. I have seen regional websites like this that have the URL structure - (STATE.EXAMPLE.com) I have also seen websites with URL Structure - (EXAMPLE.COM/STATE) Is there any advantage using one URL structure over the other in term of SEO & otherwise? In the process of transferring the website, I would like to clean-up the URL structure but I don't want to lose a significant amount of link juice/organic traffic. Do you recommend I restructure the URLs at this time?

Wordpress "incoming search terms" plugin
Hello everyone! newbie to SEO and have been trying to keep everything nice and ethical but I've seen on a couple of blogs today "incoming search terms" at the bottom of the blogs, then a bullet pointed list of search terms beneath it. So I had a quick search about the use of it and noticed wordpress has a plugin that automatic ally generates these "incoming search terms". I ask is this a legitimate plugin or will this harm my blog? I assume it generally will as I can't see this being much use for the audience, rather it would be 100% for trying to lure in search engines.

Should WordPress themes be hard coded for better SEO?
In the interests of making my site faster I have recently come across the suggestion of removing unwanted PHP from my WooThemes WordPress theme. The suggestion is to hard code the choices I have made in the WordPress template to reduce on database calls. Has anyone actually done this to their WordPress theme before and seen any measurable results?
