Keyword Research tool time-effort equivalent
-
SEOMoz's keyword research tool is awesome, but what does the competitiveness actually mean in terms of time/effort?
I've read the help file which is great but to get an idea, to rank for highly competitive keywords, is that 12 months of constant effort, link-building and keyword buying or more like 3 months? (how massive is massive?)
I know its a hard question to answer, but an idea would be awesome. Thanks to anyone that can answer in advance...

Thanks, hey, how do I get outta this friggin' cooler??? It's cold as well a freezer!!

Thank you Robert. I didn't post the question but loved your answer

Perfect - totally understand your response and this helps me alot; I wrote this question thinking highly competitive meant (typically) 10 years. Thanks again.

Hugh,
Just so I am not impaled by public opinion, I want to say again that this is a rough way of doing this. Looking at what you have, for me or me as my agency, I would say that I could pull off the above(what you have) 80% of the time or more.
There will always be factors that must be found and mitigated - the finding is where I see more failure than in mitigation. The reason IMO is that as SEO's we are prone to sight-blocking hubris. OK, sorry, I am prone to sight-blocking hubris and must be ever vigilant.
So, that said, I wish you the best and leave you with this: as to red and blue oceans remember the premise of the book; the effort is less and the payoff is higher in blue than in red oceans.
Best

Thanks for the answer Robert, this expands my thinking - I like the blue ocean/red ocean idea, and I understand the verticals concept (although I'm a newb when it comes to SEO).
So based on your thinking, would you say ballpark estimates for reaching top-3 in local searches (with consistent and expert SEO) would be:
-
around 3 months for highly competitive keywords,
-
1 month for a 'competitiveness' score of around 35?
... and multiply this by, say, 4 for global-dominant rankings...
For me so much in business planning comes down to gauging demand before developing products, and in this case I'm using keyword research to gauge market demand / competitiveness tradeoffs before I start...

Hello Hugh,
This is a very understandable question. I hope to provide you a small guide on this.
If you have a range of terms for more than one site and you have most entered into kw tool you will see that in some verticals you have a high difficulty and not a lot of searches. In others you can see high difficulty and many, many searches. That to me is one component.
The next is whether or not the search would be for a product or service that is perceived or marketed on a local basis. (A muffler shop comes to mind).
The next, which is very important is: Where are you starting from? So, for us as an agency if the client has a site and is already ranking in some areas, etc. it will provide a boost if we are helping them spread out. (making it easier even for a difficult term). But, if the client is going into unchartered waters or is essentially new to the space, it will mean having to build authority for site and pages while competing.
So, if I am looking at a global US search and have a new client with little they have done right on the Internet and we are going into what has been described as a "red ocean" in Blue Ocean Strategy, and, if the terms I am after are highly searched and difficult, page one could be 6 months or longer away.
Assuming the difficulty stays the same, but the search is now changed to be local and all else is the same, I think, I can begin to rank them for some of the terms within 3months plus or minus.
Then, if we go back to global but change them to having some Internet sophistication already, there is a significant increase in the speed with which we can help them rank. Change this to also include local and it gets faster. If, the search is a small number of searches monthly in local for any of the above, I find that it is easier to rank as less and less competitors focus on the longer tail or less familiar terms. NOTE: This is a major reason I do something I do not thoroughly enjoy: KW research.
So, I hope I have lessened your frustration to a degree,
All the best,
Robert

Is it a bad idea to hyphenate keywords?
Hello, my understanding was that Google reads hyphens in keywords as spaces, but if that's accurate how come keywords with hyphens that I research with Keyword Explorer — for instance, hospital-acquired infections — rank lower when I include the hyphen? If the hyphen hurts SEO, do I have to remove them all from the blog or page in question? Removing hyphens means a blog or page will have punctuation errors, which is irritating to an editor, but I don't want to sacrifice the effectiveness of keywords, either. Thanks, in advance, for your response!

Rank checking tool for keyword analysis
We are looking for an ideally free suitable rank checking tool to perform a keyword analysis. Previously we used Firefox Rank Checker but currently this is not working effectively as it once did. We use Authority Labs as a paid tool to track rankings but this is a rank tracking platform and not so effective for a once-off rank check to perform a keyword analysis. Any thoughts, help or ideas here would be super appreciated!

In Need of Excel Formula to Manage Export from Adwords Keyword Tool
Hi All, I was wondering if anyone had an excel formula that they use to manage large amounts of data in spreadsheet exports from the Google Adwords Keyword Tool? Specifically, I am interested in something that establishes a solid corollary between a given keywords competition score and the amount of local/global monthly searches. Any suggested ideas or methods are very welcome. Thanks!

Keyword Analysis Tool
Can someone please enlighten me on the Keyword Analysis tool Matrix. Does Domain Linking refer to the number of links back to that domain as a whole? Also why is it that a page with a lower page ranking can be way ahead of one with a domain ranking that is way higher or vice-a -versa? What is a good number to go after? what is actually attainable? Thanks

Keyword Research, Feels like my head is about to explode in 1.2...
Hello fellow Mozzers! I've been reading quite a few books and forums on SEO for past few years. Finally a few weeks ago I decided to dive into SEO a lot more seriously and start building and optimizing our ecommerce site. We sell brand name servers, workstations, storage and related replacement and upgrade parts for them. I've read many articles, browsed all the popular SEO forums, watched SEO training videos religiously. I'm happy to say that I now (more or less) understand how to optimize a site/page for SEO (On page optimization, unique content/blogging, link building, social sharing, off page optimization, etc...) However the biggest challenge I'm have with is Keyword Research (which I think is the first and most crucial step). I can't seem to find a tool that will help me find good keywords/phrases that I can target in my business profile. Since its an ecommerce site, and we have about 2500 products which means about 2500 pages. the good thing about product pages is that there are part numbers which get searched quite often so I have no problem with selecting keywords for product pages, however for the home page its a NIGHTMARE. I searched the word "server" in Google keyword tool, and it shows that it has 40,000,000 monthly global searches with low competition. That's great news (right? high search volume, low competition) However when I google server or servers, the 1st page is filled with sites like: Dell, HP, IBM, Wikipedia, and a few more with a very high domain authority and thousands of links. So I'm assuming trying to target "servers" as my keyword for the homepage is probably a bad idea, correct? When I google "buy server" i get mostly irrelevant content like "how to start a calling card business, a few articles(also irrelavant). I guess my question is this: Can you please provide some advice or information on the keyword research articles and/or tools you use? Something that would provide relevant keywords based on a main keyword. Or am I not using the Google Keyword Tool properly I also checked out our main competitors site to see which keywords they use, to get an idea, but when trying to google the keywords they're targeting they're not being displayed on Google for those keywords on the first few pages. We are almost done building our new site which will have a few tools like online server configurator, Q&A section, Server Talk (Forum), Quick Product Finder(Suggests products based on entered criteria) and a few more Which most of our competitors don't have, and I pretty much have an idea on which keywords to use for those pages and sections of the site, but I am completely clueless on the keywords to use for the home page. Any help is greatly appreciated! Also forgot to add, should I just use the company name and a few simple keywords for the home page like servers, buy servers and then write weekly or biweekly article that are server related like Does a small business need a server? How do I choose a server for my business? Should I upgrade my server or buy a new one? Do I collocate or host in-house? Should I virtualize my server? Obviously adding links to products and services within these articles and try to create brand awareness that way?
