Does Alexa ranking consider unique visitor only?
-
The traffic of my website has been dropping since 2 months ago while I am seeing the Alexa ranking is increasing
I know some of our staff need to visit our website( home page and some other front pages) daily to handle some data gathering. But they are from a same ip/office. Would this become a factor of this Alexa ranking result?

BTW: If you want to advertise with someone I would do the following:
- Get them to share key traffic and demographic figures (Google Analytics)
- Track their campaigns and click-throughs - use the Google URL Builder to build your destination campaigns, you will then be able to analyse in your GA account how your external campaigns perform.
- Generally websites accepting advertisers have inflated rate-cards and inflate their traffic. I would compare their CPM with for example running similar campaigns through Google Adwords (you might get more value from Adwords)
- I would also base your payment on performance - don't work on impressions or clicks, try and work on conversions - i.e. you pay nothing for impression/click but you pay a conversion rate - i.e. 10 USD for a user registration or xx % of revenue for any referred transaction.
- Be careful with paying for registrations (especially those not resulting in revenue), many sites will drive lots of signups to you but no actual revenue.

Thanks for your info!

Don't look at Alexa, especially if the website is not certified (i.e. has the Alexa tracking code installed). Even if a site is certified and has the tracking code installed, the traffic (both PV and visitors) is hugely underreported.
Almost all their stats are still some guesswork and fluctuate. Remember that Alexa will only track traffic if the toolbar is installed and it will use the JS tracking code to for additional metrics. You will typically find that only techies will run Alexa.
I would do perhaps competitive comparisons (if this is what you are looking for) with Google Trends, SeoMoz or any of the other tools, but in most cases it will still be guess work as your competitors will not openly share information. Another means is Google Adwords.
I consider Alexa a nice "vanity" rank and good for marketing purposes - i.e. "We are #5 on Alexa" - it means really nothing and has no impact on PVs, revenue etc.

Thanks for your info. what is the best tools to evaluate a site's traffic then? I am using this info to decide if I want to advertise with them sometime. Thanks.

Don't give too much weight in Alexa, Compete, Quantcast. They all measure in different ways and Alexa in specific although widely used, is only for those who have a toolbar.
The reason why your traffic is dropping and Alexa is rising, could be because you are pointing webmasters and other related users like SEO agents to your site. A lot of webmasters have wide range of toolbars and they are likely to give Alexa rankings lower.
If you visit webmaster sites, you will notice their Alexa ranking is easily lower, but doesn't mean they get lots of traffic.
Bottom line is don't pay too much attention to these stats as they are not accurate.

Ranking fluctuation
According to Miles Rank tracking I have a keyword that is fluctuating by 5 or 6 positions in a 24-hour period every time it goes 10 down to 15 and back to 10 again with very little stopping point in between and keeps fluctuating like that. As far as I know the website is stable it uses Magento 1.9 and is a fixed category page. The page URL is relatively new as we migrated from an old site with a different URL structure I added 301s at server level from the old page URL to the new one. There is only two things I can think that can be the problem -
Technical SEO | | seoman10
1. Lack of links directly to the page (there is literally only one or two)
2. Loading speed problem But I don't see any of these would cause a 5 position fluctuation regularly every day. But do you have any thoughts? Thanks in advance.0 -
Internal Link Rank Flow
I've read in many articles that pages can "pass" rank to other pages internally. Is anyone aware of any well done internal linking case studies which confirm this? If my homepage has the strongest Page Authority, would linking to another page deeper into my website from my homepage boost my rank for the deeper page in Google (more so than linking to the deep page from a page with lower page authority)?

What should I consider before setting up a sub domain?
Morning all! We've just been approached by IT. They've been asked to develop an online 'portal' where clients can upload and download materials. IT will be developing a portal that sits on the company network perimeter (hosted on our internal servers). The concept is that 3rd parties can get and update information in regards to progressing cases, the first use will be for agencies who will retrieve records via the portal and then post reports after a consultation. however I would like to have an automatic link to forward to the portal from the web address: oursite.com/dave We will look to create robot.txt and anything else to prevent from listings/indexes. Does any of the above mess with your SEO? The Directors have asked if they can have this on a sub-domain of our site. Is this wise? And, are there any major SEO considerations for my team to worry about? Better still, have any of you had to deal with this before? If so, what happened? All the best, John

What should the combined domain rank of 2 sites?
We have just combined 2 sites by redirecting a site with a domain ranking of 35 to a site with a domain ranking of 27 (this is because the we want to use the address with a ranking of 27) After a week I now have 1 domain with a ranking of 26?? So my questions are; Should the ranking have increased already? What should I expect the ranking to increase to if at all? Is there something I could have done wrong when transferring? Thanks

GWT crawl errors: How big a ranking issue?
For family reasons (child to look after) I can't keep a close eye on my SEO and SERPs. But from top 10 rankings in January for a dozen keywords I'm now not in top 80 results -- save one keyword for which I'm ~18-20.
Technical SEO | | Jeepster
Not a sitewide penalty: some of my internal pages are still ranking top 3 or so. In GWT, late March I received warning of a rise in server errors:
17 Server Errors/575 soft 404s/17 Not Founds/Access Denied 1/Others 4
I've also got 2 very old sitemaps (from two different ex-SEO firms) & I'm guessing about 75% of the links on there no longer exist. Q: Could all this be behind my calamitous SERPS drop? Or should I be devoting my -- limited -- time to improving my links?0 -

Wrong Page Ranking
Higher-level page with more power getting pushed out by weaker page in the SERPs for an important keyword. I don't care about losing the weaker page. Should I: 404 the weaker page and wait for Google to (hopefully) replace it with the stronger page? 301 the weaker page to the stronger page? NOTE: Due to poor communication between content team and myself, the weak and strong pages have similar title tags (i.e, "lawsuits" and "litigation")
