Can personal name anchors from blog commenting be a risk?
-
Hello,
I've created a new site early this year.
In an effort to stay on Googles good side I decided not to do any link building. Everything you create yourself is pretty much frowned upon by Google, right?
I have been doing a fair bit of blog commenting where that would add value.
As a result my link profile shows about 50% anchors with my name in it.
Can this be dangerous?
Thanks!
-
Yeah, I'm Danish... can't run from it
-
Ha, no worries, glad it helped! P.S. I kind of like your name, it sounds kind of like a viking name. Take care!
-
Ha, ha... great answer
I am not trying to rank for my own name and it's also a quite boring one.
Thanks!
-
Nope, that should be totally fine, that is, unless your name is 'Quality SEO Services' or 'Cheap Toys'.
Take a look at the link profile of say Distilled.com - a big chunk of the anchor text is the two senior partners names. Likewise, my own site is the same.
Additionally, Penguin is keyword specific, so, it would never happen but if it did and you picked up a penalty for your name, would that even be that big of a problem?
I have a natural penalty for my name in that there is a far cooler and more interesting musician called Marcus Miller so I have absolutely no chance in hell of ranking 1st for my own name and rightly so as most people Googling 'Marcus Miller' are not looking for me, they are looking for my cool, M jazz composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist alter ego (who also worked with Miles Davis).
Honestly, as long as you are adding value with your blog posts and keep using your name or nick name and don't do anything silly, then you have nothing to worry about and likely a lot to gain!

Second anchor text on page. Does it count?
Back in 2008 there was "proof" that the anchor text of a second link on a page would not be counted for the anchor text.
Link Building | | Stramark
In the MOZ starter guide it is still advocated: https://moz.com/learn/seo/anchor-text BUT in 2014 it was reported on searchengine land:
http://searchengineland.com/googles-matt-cutts-one-page-two-links-page-counted-first-link-192718
That the second link might be counted. Direct link to the matt cuts video from 28 may 2014

https://moz.com/blog/the-first-link-counts-rule-and-the-hash-sign
https://moz.com/ugc/3-ways-to-avoid-the-first-link-counts-rule (2011) Question: did anyone recently test this recently? The deeper questions are:
1:is the LINK value counted if you have more that one link on a page to another page?
2: is the Anchor text counted if you have more than one anchortext to another page? The most interresting i have is that i have a menu from which i link to my important pages. Does it help to put extra links in the content to specific pages?1 -
Remove comments or leave them be?
We're finding a lot of comments that were posted by a previous company - they've been using a keyword as the comment name (UGH) and then the comments are usually generic, like "great information, will definitely be back to read more form you" - you guys know what I mean... Now, this site is ranking well and so are the keywords. My question is, should we work on removing those comments or just leave them be and now moving forward, use the proper process - since we are doing this ourselves now.

How to deal with over-optimised anchor text?
Hi, We took on a client a few months ago, who came to us after seeing a drop in rankings. After cleaning up the site, we concluded that their drop is more than likely down to over-optimised anchor text. The keywords that have mainly been affected are the ones that have a majority of links with the exact anchor text. The links have built using blog networks, articles and there are some comments thrown in for good measure. We have no way of getting them removed. Hmm, links can't hurt you!? So what is the best solution? Has anyone had any success over coming this issue? What sort of time scales are we looking at? Gareth

Pay Per Post Blog Reviews - Does It Work?
I have come to realize that several SEO companies are basing their entire link strategy on paying bloggers to write a review about their client's website that also includes a link back to their website. I am thinking about adding this as part of my link building campaign. I am thinking about acquiring approximately 15 links a month from PR 2-5 blogs that pertain to my industry and target audience. I am thinking of using the network payperpost.com to find good blogs. First question: Does this type of link building work well? Second question: Is 15 links a month from PR 2-5 blogs (writing on my subject matter) enough to help out?
