2 URLs, same content, 1 with keywords. Does this hurt me?
-
I'm in the process of adding some new features to our site and have a question about our URLs.
Most of our URLs consist of either
sitename.com/content/contentid
I'm in the process of building a directory to those pages. The directory has a number of filters which will ultimately point to the destination page.
sitename.com/filter1/filter2/contentid or
sitename.com/filter1/filter2/contentname
The destinations will have references.
From an SEO perspective, I would think I want the filter1/filter2 version of the link indexed since this will add keywords that someone might search for. However, since the filters are dynamic, if someone just searches for contentname I would want to have sitename.com/contentname returned in the search results.
Do I get any SEO benefit out of building those filter links as described if they are not the canonical links?

As an SEO best practice, there should never be more than one version of any page URL. Even with Canonical implementation, it's only a signal, not a directive, and not all search engines even pay attention to that. While it's perfectly acceptable to offer filtering options for people to discover content, filters should be blocked from indexing at all cost. Leaving it up to Google or any search engine to have to figure out which is the original content is not a best practice even though many sites do it, and even though Google says it's okay.
Trying to get one page found simply by inserting different keywords in a URL is also a crap-shoot since that's the only thing that changes about the page itself. Like buying a keyword exact match domain only to use it as a redirect to the real domain.

Does changing/shortening a url hurt SEO?
Hi all, I am in the process of making small optimization changes to my site. I noticed Moz identified quite a few URLs that could be shortened. I intend to shorten these URLs and create 301 redirects to ensure website users land on the right page. My question is, will this change in URL damage rankings and engagement(assuming the URL remains content relevant)? I have read in some places that when creating URL redirects for a change in domain, people saw a dip in rankings and engagement. I, however, am not intending to change the main domain of the site, but rather the URL slug. Any thoughts?

Duplicate Content?
Hi All, I have a new client site, a static site with navigation across the top, and down the left side. Two of the menus from the top navigation are replicated in the navigation structure on the left hand side. They have the exact same url structure, they are in fact the same exact page, listed on the site in two areas. My question is - is this a case of duplicate content, or, as they urls are the exact same, will they be seen as a single page? A canonical tag on one would be replicated on the other by the CMS - so do I leave it, or try to get them to re-structure removing one of the links? (I doubt they will do this as its a brand new site they just has developed). Many thanks!

Keyword in home II
Hi there! As someone told me in this forum it's important regarding SEO that the home page has the keyword in the url. When I type in www.tarifakitesurfcamp.com the home page is shown but it doesn't have the keyword por that page (cause obiously I didn't make any change at all) . I mean it should be something like www.tarifakitesurfcamp.com/KEYWORD right? The problem comes when I try to edit the url in the page section of wordpress. I'm not allowed to do that. Otherwise I CAN edit the rest of the pages of the website (not the home or considered as home). Does anybody have an answer for this issue? Thanks

KeyWord Density?
What is an acceptable density for a keyword? It's wise to push it as close to spam without sacrificing user experience, correct? I read an article on SeoMoz (outdated I think) that mentioned 6%. If it's a keyword phrase, do you have to make sure you don't go over the density level of a particular word in the phrase. If it's a three word phrase, do you have to not use any one word more than X% or just monitor the exact keyword.

Content Tabs and Keyword Stuffing
I am in the process of drawing up content templates to guide my company's marketing team in creating SEO optimized content as we move over our retail website to a new platform. On each product page, we will have multiple tabs that are crawl-able, each one containing different chunks of information on the products. Within each tab, I was thinking of breaking up the content and adding SEO value by using headers (h2 or h3) that have a keyword included. So, for example: "How The PRODUCT NAME Works" and "User Manuals for your PRODUCT NAME." Between the multiple tabs, in headers alone, the main keyword for the product (which will usually be the product name) will be on the page 7 times. Between this and the keywords that are part of the actual content (ex: product description), is this too many keyword instances? I know headers are often skimmed or skipped when used to simply break up the content, so I don't think they will impact user experience too much. However, I would love some feedback on if you agree with that and if you think I should cut down on the number of keywords or if I am headed in the right direction. Thanks!

Title Keyword Question
I'm writing up keywords for new pages on a website. There are a number of variations on the way we can say what we're looking for, and I don't want to post the specific keywords but I'll give an example using fruits. Let's say I want to optimize for Granny Smith apples, McIntosh apples, Jonathan apples, etc. Could my title be Apples - Granny Smith, McIntosh, Jonathan and my page will come up when someone searchs "Granny Smith apples" or "McIntosh apples" etc. or do the words have to be repeated in order. Obviously I will also be repeating these in the description and on the page I'm optimizing. Thanks!

Duplicate content issue with dynamically generated url
Hi, For those who have followed my previous question, I have a similar one regarding dynamically generated urls. From this page http://www.selectcaribbean.com/listing.html the user can make a selection according to various criteria. 6 results are presented and then the user can go to the next page. I know I should probably rewrite url's such as these: http://www.selectcaribbean.com/listing.html?pageNo=1&selType=&selCity=&selPrice=&selBeds=&selTrad=&selMod=&selOcean= but since all the results presented are basically generated on the fly for the convenience of the user, I am afraid google my consider this as an attempt to generate more pages as there are pages for each individual listing. What is my solution for this? Nofollow these pages? Block them thru robots txt?
