I'm having a hard time understanding branded keywords. When wouldn't I want to brand a keyword?
-
For example, why wouldn't I want to brand all my keywords with my company name?
-
Hi William,
Thanks for the question. It looks like you've got a few great answers already. I thought I would weigh in as well.
Branded keywords will be important for you to monitor how effective your branding efforts are. You'll also want non-branded keywords to help you to analyze how well your SEO efforts as a whole are doing. It's not required to have either, but I recommended it.
I hope that helps.
Cheers,
Joel. -
I'm not sure what you mean by "why wouldn't I want to brand all my keywords with my company name." Are you asking if you should only optimize for keywords like "companyname shoes"? Unless your company is a leader in the industry, that wouldn't work very well.

Will,
It makes great sense to look at the 'plumbing + city' in terms of ranking difficulty! It is certainly clear that 'plumbing' is something that you will not rank and 'plumbing + city' will be a way better! Just put your self in shoes of the customer - you will look for plumbing thingies in city, area or anywhere where is nearest to the place where you seeking this service for.
At this case - customer's logic + keywords will generate the best leads and will not ask you terrible much effort to rank in Google by those keywords.
So, use ether - city, area or other popular terms + service name. Easiest way to start!
Best,
Jungles

Thanks! That clears it up a lot. But why wouldn't I want to add locations and city names to brand keywords?
For example 'plumbing + city'. I know I won't rank for plumbing, but what about when I add the city in there?

branded keywords are those that include your brand and none branded are the generic terms which will take more work and are likely to drive a lot of traffic from generic searches people put in if they don't know your brand. So for instance if I was searching for beer instead of Budweiser beer then ranking highly and gaining traffic from the none branded search would be useful to know as a segment and it would give you a guide as to how your search engine rankings are going.

Hi William,
It's easy - if you have high visible brand that delivers you great traffic (or you are planning to build one like that) you are tightening together keywords that you are targeting because you creating a bridge between Visibility, Marketing and Conversions.
Example: shoes + your brand name.
If you ever will be brave enough to even think that you could rank your website for keyword 'shoes' - good luck with that! But it is really possible to do for 'Shoes +your brand name' keyword as it will be unique, without any competition and therefore supper easy to rank! It is something like cut the piece of the 'shoes' keyword traffic which is like supper HUGE!
Regards,
Jungles

Unsolved Keyword Rank History chart has missing data for periods of time
Hello, When I look at the rank history for a particular keyword, there are missing gaps in the data. For example, the keyword was fluctuating around rank 10-20 from Jan 2022 to July 2022. Then suddenly the line on the graph disappears. It starts tracking again in Oct 2022 starting at rank 16. It almost appears as if Moz lost track of the keyword for some time. Other tracked keywords did not experience the same issue during this time. Then as a result, Moz reporting will say the tracked keyword moved up in ranking 40+. What is happening here? I'm unsure how to explain this activity to my clients.

Can I rely on Keyword Difficulty tool?
I just ran into a problem that I hadn't expected. Testing the Keyword Difficulty I saw the results contained a result for a page that has Domain Authority=1 and Page Authority=1. As a result, Keyword Difficulty was reduced (compared to last month), which may actually be reversed if the site is crawled. Sadly, I didn't run the report on the figures as it was a small project. Questions: Can I rely on results shown by Keyword Difficulty? Are results where Domain Authority =1 are used to calculate Keyword Difficulty? If so, why is that? Is there any difference between a page that has received no links and a page that OSE/Mozscape has no link data for? The problem Using the Keyword Difficulty tool, I found swings of up to 14% in Keyword Difficulty (between Oct -Nov). Dr Pete may suggest that this is because of changes in Google's index ( http://www.seomoz.org/blog/a-week-in-the-life-of-3-keywords ). However, It would be helpful to have a figure for Keyword Difficulty that isn't affected by the gaps in the Mozscape data. The (bad) solution You can mirror something close to Keyword Difficulty using: =(Sum of Page Authorities + Sum of Domain Authorities )/20 Right now, I have resorted to manually calculating keyword difficulty. I use the SEOMoz Page Authority & Domain Authority figures and a quick splash of Excel SUMIF and COUNTIF. I find the results don't look as 'easy' when I can ignore results where the data is unknown (PageAuthority=1 & DomainAuthority = 1). Background Info One result I still have a report on is for the phrase [fixing your business puzzle] using US Results on Google. For the specific result, I found the additional information about the site: DNS lookup shows the domain was registered in 2010

Tracking 1000 Keywords / 5 Competitiors
What's the best way to track 1000 keywords for a website along with monitoring how the competition ranks for the same set of keywords. We love the SEOMoz Tools but would love to see what else is out there using which I can pull weekly reports maybe of our rankings along with those of the competition.

Why is my site showing a redirect that doesn't exist?
I have two sites. www.plasticandfoampackaging.com www.flyfitters.com Previously I had flyfitters 301 redirecting to plasticandfoampackaging. I stopped that about a month ago. I moved the nameservers and stopped the redirect. I am a novice but it seems to be working perfectly. However, SEOMOZ is showing that the redirect still exists. Does the site need to be recrawled or do I need to update the info somewhere? Please advise. Thanks Patrick
