Org & edu citations or links
-
One of my clients is a physician and I have achieved excellent SERP positioning for multiple targeted terms, but need to build a bit more domain authority in hopes of climbing one or two more positions and bumping a strong local competitor.
I am segueing into the the off-page SEO work and was wondering if anyone would be willing to share their favorite search queries or tips for seeking-out potential citation or back link sources on .org or .edu sites which are relevant to my client's area of expertise?
Thanks!

Hey Marcus,
Thanks for the thoughtful response - much appreciated!
I was aware of WhiteSpark's citation tool, but wasn't aware that they had collaborated to form citationlabs - very cool - I am experimenting with it at the moment. Naturally, many leads arrive at dead-ends, but no one said link prospecting was easy - right?

Hey Dino
Sorry, my bad, I kind of misread that.
Right, there are various options and some tools that can help. It's hard to know the very best way without knowing the industry and keywords your client targets but I would start with those keywords and some basic inurl searches so.
<keyword>inurl:.org</keyword>
<keyword>inurl.edu</keyword>
Then, you can play with that in several different ways. There is a great cheatsheet of search queries here so you need to tinker and see what works for your clients industry.

Then beyond that, the following tools and blog posts make for some interesting reading.

Hi Marcus,
Thank you for the response. I am looking for methods to find the candidate sites other than the obvious search queries (e.g. intitle: "key phrase" )
As for the the suggestions offered once the candidate sites have been identified; I agree completely, and have already branded prominent social accounts in anticipation of "spreading the word" so to speak

Well, the obvious one is to identify all the relevant candidate sites and look at what kind of resources they are linking out to. Then, create something that is either missing or substantially better than something they already link out to and do the outreach to request the link.
That is like a view from 10,000 feet but that is basic way to go about earning these kinds of links.
If you are clever, this approach could be used to not only get these specific links from .edu and .org sites but to generate a whole bunch of links and social activity.
In a nutshell: create something amazing and then tell the world about it.

GWT app and link emulation
Hi, I have a gwt site - https://www.whatiswhere.com. I have tab control which emulates the menu. I am planning to put <a>links instead of text into tab labels to create internal links. I am thinking to add java script to stop onclick event of</a> <a>otherwise i will get to the new session of GWT site. What I want is to just change the tab but at the same time have a link for the crawler. Would my approach work? Will it be equivalent to non-follow link? Will it improve the ranking comparing to 'no link at all' case?</a> <a>Thanks, Andrei.</a>

Links: Links come from bizzare pages
Hi all, My question is related to links that I saw in Google Search Console. While looking at who is linking to my site, I saw that GSC has some links that are coming from third party websites but these third party webpages are not indexed and not even put up by their owners. It looks like the owner never created these pages, these pages are not indexed (when you do a site: search in Google) but the URL of these pages loads content in the browser. Example - www.samplesite1.com/fakefolder/fakeurl what exactly is this thing? To mention more details, the third party website in question is a Wordpress website and I guess is probably hijacked. But how does one even get these types pages/URLs up and running on someone else's website and then link out to other websites. I am concerned as the content that I am getting link from is adult content and I will have to do some link cleansing soon.

Directory Quality for Citation Building
Hello All, Just started to work on a new clients site that has been hit with multiple google penalties. I was looking at their backlink profile and noticed they have numerous links from what seem to be very low quality directory websites. My question is, when building citations and looking for directories to submit to, what makes one directory more credible then another one? If most of them are just publishing links and business information, why does google consider one credible and the other spammy? Clearly with some it's easy to tell if they are credible or not, but with some it is not as easy. Should you only really be submitting to the best of the best or are some lower lever ones ok too? Have read a few things on this topic, but most is older and just want to hear what people have to say on this today. Thanks.

Link Building on a small budget
Hi Folks I'm looking for recommendations from the community that can help me tic the requirements below; Looking for link-building services for a small start up. Prefer to work directly with the person doing the work. Prefer that they speak English 🙂 Have a small monthly budget so not looking for big organisations, rather a expert who is working on his/her own, and can have a phone conversation with me before engagement. Any-hoots I may be looking for a needle in a haystack here but any recommendations on people would be highly appreciated 🙂 PS: I know SEOmoz recommends some folks, but wow they are expensive ... can't afford that

Pagination & SEO
I have the WP-Pagination plugin and I am wondering how to handle duplicate content issues and what's best for SEO. My developer initially downloaded the plugin to speed up loading for the home page. Now my home page has 21 pages of paginated content. But the pagination continues with each of my categories as well. Should I be placing a canonical reference to my home page, or category main page? My site name is gracessweetlife (dot) com
