Org & edu citations or links
-
One of my clients is a physician and I have achieved excellent SERP positioning for multiple targeted terms, but need to build a bit more domain authority in hopes of climbing one or two more positions and bumping a strong local competitor.
I am segueing into the the off-page SEO work and was wondering if anyone would be willing to share their favorite search queries or tips for seeking-out potential citation or back link sources on .org or .edu sites which are relevant to my client's area of expertise?
Thanks!

Hey Marcus,
Thanks for the thoughtful response - much appreciated!
I was aware of WhiteSpark's citation tool, but wasn't aware that they had collaborated to form citationlabs - very cool - I am experimenting with it at the moment. Naturally, many leads arrive at dead-ends, but no one said link prospecting was easy - right?

Hey Dino
Sorry, my bad, I kind of misread that.
Right, there are various options and some tools that can help. It's hard to know the very best way without knowing the industry and keywords your client targets but I would start with those keywords and some basic inurl searches so.
<keyword>inurl:.org</keyword>
<keyword>inurl.edu</keyword>
Then, you can play with that in several different ways. There is a great cheatsheet of search queries here so you need to tinker and see what works for your clients industry.

Then beyond that, the following tools and blog posts make for some interesting reading.

Hi Marcus,
Thank you for the response. I am looking for methods to find the candidate sites other than the obvious search queries (e.g. intitle: "key phrase" )
As for the the suggestions offered once the candidate sites have been identified; I agree completely, and have already branded prominent social accounts in anticipation of "spreading the word" so to speak

Well, the obvious one is to identify all the relevant candidate sites and look at what kind of resources they are linking out to. Then, create something that is either missing or substantially better than something they already link out to and do the outreach to request the link.
That is like a view from 10,000 feet but that is basic way to go about earning these kinds of links.
If you are clever, this approach could be used to not only get these specific links from .edu and .org sites but to generate a whole bunch of links and social activity.
In a nutshell: create something amazing and then tell the world about it.

Too Many External Links A Problem
Client is thinking of adding a directory to an eCommerce site which users would find useful. It would help users find other services and vendors that are specific to the niche of products this site is selling. My only concern is it would create a number of external links to other sites. Even though they're related, would this diminish our standing with Google search?

Help needed for a 53 Page Internal Website Structure & Internal Linking
Hey all... I'm designing the structure for a website that has 53 pages. Can you take a look at the attached diagram and see if the website structure is ok? On the attached diagram I have numbered the pages from 1 to 53, with 1 being the most important home page - 2,3,4,5, being the next 4 important pages - 6,7,8... 15,16,17 being the 3rd set of important pages, and 18,19,20..... 51,52,53 being the last set of pages which are the easiest to rank. I have two questions: Is the website structure for this correct? I have made sure that all pages on the website are reachable. Considering the home page, and page number 2,3,4,5 are the most important pages - I am linking out to these pages from the the last set of pages (18,29,20...51,52,53). There are 36 pages in the last set - and out of this 36, from 24 of them I am linking back to home page and page number 2,3,4,5. The remaining 8 pages of the 36 will link back to pages 6,7,8...15,16,17. In total the most importnat page will have the following number of internal incoming links: Home Page : 25 Pages 2,3,4,5 : 25 Pages 6,7,8...15,16,17 : 4 Pages 18,19,20...51,52,53 : 1 Is this ok considering home page, and pages 2,3,4,5 are the most important? Or do you think I should divide and give more internal links to the other pages also? If you can share any inputs or suggestions to how I can improve this it will greatly help me. Also if you know any references for good guides to internal linking of websites greater that 50 pages please share them in the answers. Thank you all! Links from tumblr
I have two links from hosted tumblr blogs which are not on tumblr.com. So, website1 has a tumblr blog: tumblr.website1.com And another site website2.com also uses the a record/custom domains option from tumblr but not on a subdomain, which is decribed below: http://www.tumblr.com/docs/en/custom_domains Does this mean that all links from such sites count as coming from the same IP in google's eyes? Or is there value in getting links from multiple sites because the a-record doesn't affect SEO in a negative way? Many thanks, Mike.
