Can I rely on Keyword Difficulty tool?
-
I just ran into a problem that I hadn't expected. Testing the Keyword Difficulty I saw the results contained a result for a page that has Domain Authority=1 and Page Authority=1.
As a result, Keyword Difficulty was reduced (compared to last month), which may actually be reversed if the site is crawled. Sadly, I didn't run the report on the figures as it was a small project.
Questions:
- Can I rely on results shown by Keyword Difficulty?
- Are results where Domain Authority =1 are used to calculate Keyword Difficulty? If so, why is that?
- Is there any difference between a page that has received no links and a page that OSE/Mozscape has no link data for?
The problem
Using the Keyword Difficulty tool, I found swings of up to 14% in Keyword Difficulty (between Oct -Nov). Dr Pete may suggest that this is because of changes in Google's index ( http://www.seomoz.org/blog/a-week-in-the-life-of-3-keywords ). However, It would be helpful to have a figure for Keyword Difficulty that isn't affected by the gaps in the Mozscape data.
The (bad) solution
You can mirror something close to Keyword Difficulty using:
=(Sum of Page Authorities + Sum of Domain Authorities )/20
Right now, I have resorted to manually calculating keyword difficulty. I use the SEOMoz Page Authority & Domain Authority figures and a quick splash of Excel SUMIF and COUNTIF.
I find the results don't look as 'easy' when I can ignore results where the data is unknown (PageAuthority=1 & DomainAuthority = 1).
Background Info
One result I still have a report on is for the phrase [fixing your business puzzle] using US Results on Google. For the specific result, I found the additional information about the site:
DNS lookup shows the domain was registered in 2010
Archive.org shows no records
OSE shows no data for the site
Site uses https
Google showing No links
Robots.txt file seems fine
No Sitemap.xml -
Thanks Joel,
In terms of the expected swing month-on-month, is there any kind of ballpark figure to compare against? 14% seemed pretty high.
Thanks

Hi Darroch,
Thanks for reaching out. The Keyword Difficulty score is actually put together using a proprietary algorithm from many different metrics, not just the PA & DA. However, I'm glad you're finding a benefit from your formula as well. I definitely encourage folks to develop their own techniques and formulas like that.
As for the reliability, the short answer is: Yes. We are confident that our difficulty scores are a decently accurate representation of the competitiveness of the keyword.
The question about how the KWD score is affected by unindexed pages, I unfortunately don't have that information for you. They are going to be factored in, as they should be, but the weight will obviously be less. It's unlikely that we are not going to index a high authority page so the actual effect is likely little to none.
I hope that helps.
Cheers,
Joel.

Unsolved Ranking not collecting keywords
Hi, we recently migrated our blog to be on the same domain as our main website. It's been about a month. I have continued adding more keywords we'd like to track to our Ranking list on Moz. But it's been a week and the keywords are still not collecting. Is this something we need to fix on our end, or is there something going on with Moz? keyword ranking issues.png

Why are my keyword rankings dramatically changing week to week?
I have a site (actual several) that has been up for many years now. Content is changed monthly - regularly. It would always rank in the top 5 positions for 5 or 6 keywords. Now all of a sudden (without any dramatic changes to the website) my ranking results from my weekly Moz reports are dramatically different from week to week - every week. One Keyword will be #1, then the next week it will drop 49 positions, the 3rd week it might be #5, then Not in the Top 50, then #1 again, and so and so on. This happens to all my keywords on my site. I was waiting for Google to finish it's changes to it's algorithms but it's now been long enough and I can't get a handle on what's happening, why it's happening, and what to do about it, and what direction to take with my SEO. My Traffic has actually improved over last year by approx. 25%, but I have also started a PPC campaign for this client. Any suggestions would be great.

MozBar Chrome - Can I turn it back on?
I'm using Chrome 27.0.1453.110. I installed the Moz toolbar and lost the send button in gmail. Didn't matter how I sized the window it was out of view. So I closed the Moz toolbar while I did my mail. But now I don't know how to bring it back up. Does anyone know how to turn it on again? It is still installed.

Campaign Keyword Overview?
This may be more of a developmental comment, however... Is there any way to pull an overview of keyword ranking over the week (or any period of time) for one of your campaigns? It looks like you can pull graphs on individual keyword performance, however not for the full set of keywords for a campaign. Anyone have suggestions on how to do this within Pro Moz... or is it best to compile the keyword data every week and track it in Numbers or Excel? Thanks everyone!

Meaning of Keyword difficulty
Before joining SEOMoz I used to calculate Keyword difficulty with my own method based on keyword density, presence of synonyms, Page rank, title and URL. This seemed to rather well work and I reach 1st page on a fairly regumar basis by picking good difficulty / interest ratio keywords and only onsite optimization. (No link building) I just looked @Keyword analysis in SEOMoz. It seems it is only based on page / site autority. Is this correct? Do you believe keyword and synonym density is irrelevent? Do I need to set back to my home recipe if I want to include keyword analysis in my difficulty assessment ? Thx

Does SEOmoz have a keyword visibility report / tool?
Know of a tool where I can show the overall success of a set of keywords, us vs. the competition? A visibility report where a #1 ranking is worth 30 points, #2 is worth 29, so on and so on down to #30 worth 1 point, outside of the top 30 is worth nothing. (something like this). Trying to show an overall visibility scorecard, not sure if I can do it here or with some other tool. Didn't see it on Raven. Thanks!
