What do I do about sites that copy my content?
-
I've noticed that there are a number of websites that are copying my content.
They are putting the full article on their site, mentioning that it was reposted from my site, but contains no links to me.
How should I approach this? What are my rights and should I ask them to remove it or add a link?
Will the duplicate content affect me?
-
are they a competitor? If they replaced all the legitimate signals with their own, it's much more likely to be a spam site, or a dirty-tricks competitor or just a dirty-tricks site in general. In that case, I'd demand removal under DMCA and filing with Google for a removal from the Google index.

Hi Alan,
Thanks for your reply, I do have the rel:author set up on my site.
I have just checked the copy site page and they have replaced it with their own author tag and they have rel='canonical' set to their page.
The page copy has the same URL and the full content copied.
Their site has the full contact details, so I guess I will contact them.
What in your opinion should I ask for? The removal? A link to my site? Allow them to only use a excerpt from my site?

John,
Copying content is a frequent reality of the web. Several things need to be considered when deciding whether anything should be done about it.
When you perform a search for the title of a page in question, does their content show up above yours or near yours in organic search results?
Are the sites copying the content competitors of yours?
If either of those is a "yes", and your content is actually unique and yours, you can file a take-down request with Google.
You should also contact the site owners and instruct them to remove the content in accordance with the DMCA if you're in the U.S. and If their contact information is available. If it's not readily available on their site and you can't find them on Twitter or LinkedIn, you can do a Whois search on the domain name to see if there is contact info and it's not set to private registration.
You can even contact their hosting provider.
I also recommend you implement Google's authorship markup on your content as it is posted, to help Google understand you are the original author. Though this does not guarantee theft of content.
Ultimately, if it's spammers and they're not ranking for anything you care about in direct competition with your content, as long as you have the authorship markup in place, there's not much you can do about it beyond what I've described.

Tools to scan entire site for duplicate content?
HI guys, Just wondering if anyone knows of any tools to scan a site for duplicate content (with other sites on the web). Looking to quickly identify product pages containing duplicate content/duplicate product descriptions for E-commerce based websites. I know copy scape can which can check up to 10,000 pages in a single operation with Batch Search. But just wondering if there is anything else on the market i should consider looking at? Cheers, Chris

Hey guys, quick question I didn't find an answer to online. Scenario: 1. Site A links to Site B. It's a natural, regular, follow-link 2. Site A joins Site B's affiliate program, and adds an affiliate link Question: Does the first, regular follow link get devalued by the second affiliate link? Cheers!

Microsite as a stand-alone site under one domain and sub-domained under another: duplicate content penalty?
We developed and maintain a microsite (example: www.coolprograms.org) for a non-profit that lives outside their main domain name (www.nonprofit-mainsite.org) and features content related to a particular offering of theirs. They are utilizing a Google Grant to run AdWords campaigns related to awareness. They currently drive traffic from the AdWords campaigns to both the microsite (www.coolprograms.org) and their main site (www.nonprofit-mainsite.org). Google recently announced a change in their policy regarding what domains a Google Grant recipient can send traffic to via AdWords: https://support.google.com/nonprofits/answer/1657899?hl=en. The ads must all resolve to one root domain name (nonprofit-mainsite.org). If we were to subdomain the microsite (example: coolprograms.nonprofit-mainsite.org) and keep serving the same content via the microsite domain (www.coolprograms.org) is there a risk of being penalized for duplicate content? Are there other things we should be considering?

Need your thoughts on my site
Hi, This is my site: http://hemorrhoidssuccess.com/ I have got some decent natural links with a mix of different anchor texts. My main keyword is "Hemorrhoids Treatment", And i got very less exact match anchor texts. Now i was able to rank for "Top Hemorrhoid Treatment" on #2 Page, but i was not in the index for the my main keyword "Hemorrhoids Treatment". Can you review my site and let me know, what i am missing? Do i need to get more links? If so with what anchor texts? Will be waiting for your replies.. Thanks in Advance

Copying my Facebook content to website considered duplicate content?
I write career advice on Facebook on a daily basis. On my homepage users can see the most recent 4-5 feeds (using FB social media plugin). I am thinking to create a page on my website where visitors can see all my previous FB feeds. Would this be considered duplicate content if I copy paste the info, but if I use a Facebook social media plugin then it is not considered duplicate content? I am working on increasing content on my website and feel incorporating FB feeds would make sense. thank you

Separate Site or should we incorporate it into our main site
Hello, We have a website to sell personal development trainings. The owners want to start 2 blogs - one for each owner - that promotes their personal coaching practices. What's the SEO advantages of embedding both blogs in the current site vs starting 2 brand new blogs with their names as the domain names?
