How to optimize an about page for SEO. Best practices? Word count?

Does anyone have any advice on word count and best practice SEO for a blog about page or even a website about page?

I like Corey's ideas very much. I would add: a) don't forget links to those certifying org's, etc. and good anchor text; and b) that your primary audience is people -- include what will reinforce loyalty and interest, e.g., testimonials (which you can link to a testimonial page) and visual cues (logos, images about your services, etc.).

I agree with Corey and Fabio, 100%. I would suggest you to talk to your user on this page. Connect with them and use the language as it pertains to your specific audience. As for meta data, Corey again has some great advice there.

I wouldn't be so wrapped up in word count as I would be making that page valuable. An about page can have huge weight in a potential customer's faith in your company.
I do usually target some keywords to an about page, though. People search for companies as well as their services, and I would use company-oriented phrases in your title, meta, and copy. So, if you ran a digital strategy company in New York, you might title it like:
Digital Strategy Company | New York | (companyname)
Firm, agency, provider, etc. work well here as well, depending on the particular niche (AdWords keyword tool helps a lot with that). You could also get more geographic with it, and close some easier long-tail searches (for example, if you were in NYC, you might find people searching for SoHo, Midtown, Manhattan, or nearby villages and such). It usually doesn't take much more than saying "Hey, we're located near X, just down the road from Y, in Z.".
Or, you could get really crazy, and about weird minor niches that sometimes only the keyword tool will pick out. Like, do people care about you being certified in A, using B software, being compliant with C, having a charitable / environmental program like D. People search for some crazy stuff. Even if the volume is very low, competition for these sorts of things usually is too, and taking a few moments to consider usually adds up to a lot in the long-term.

I don't think you should focus on doing SEO for this page. You should create a content that a reader loves... maybe telling the site history or anything funny about the founders. You need to find a creative way to tell the readers the history of your company/website.

SEO - Massive duplication of same page, but different link.
Hi!
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | jennisprints
I'm dealing with a big client who's site has a big (approx. 39 000) duplication of the "same" page (same content) but each page has a different URL. The duplicated page is a "become a member"-page.
I've checked the backlinks in Google Search Console and there are no sites linking to any of the duplicated pages.
The developers have no clue where or how the pages came to be duplicated, but my guess is that every time a new customer sets up an account the page becomes duplicated. The customer want us to just remove the pages and sort out the duplication, but removing the pages might cause a big drop in back links/traffic and what not. I would much rather redirect the duplicated pages to the original page, but given that there are 39 000 pages it might mess with the site speed. Looking for ideas and suggestions of what the next step should be, remove or redirect.
Thanks so much!0 -
What are best page titles for sub-folders or sub-directories? Same as website?
Hi all, We always mention "brand & keyword" in every page title along with topic in the website, like "Topic | vertigo tiles". Let's say there is a sub-directory with hundreds of pages...what will be the best page title practice in mentioning "brand & keyword" across all pages of sub-directory to benefit in-terms if SEO? Can we add "vertigo tiles" to all pages of sub-directory? Or we must not give same phrase? Thanks,

Does site size (page count) effect search ranking?
If a company has a handful of large sites that function as collection of unique portals into client-specific content (password protected), will it have any positive effect on search ranking to migrate all of the sites to one URL structure.

If Penguin 2.0 targets specific pages and keywords, should I spend less SEO effort on them since will they be harder to optimize? Penalty repair is only starting at end of year.
I’m working with a company that got hit by Penguin 2.0. They’re going to switch to white-hat only for a few months and review analytics before considering repairing the penalty. In the meantime, would it make sense to focus less SEO effort (on-site optimization, link building, etc.) on any pages or keywords that were penalized or hit hardest? Or are those the pages we should work on the most? Thanks for reading!

Best practices for handling https content?
Hi Mozzers - I'm having an issue with https content on my site that I need help with. Basically we have some pages that are meant to be secured, cart pages, auth pages, etc, and then we have the rest of the site that isn't secured. I need those pages to load correctly and independently of one another so that we are using both protocols correctly. Problem is - when a secure page is rendered the resources behind it (scripts, etc) won't load with the unsecured paths that are in our master page files currently. One solution would be to render the entire site in https only, however this really scares me from an SEO standpoint. I don't know if I want to put my eggs in that basket. Another solution is to structure the site so that secure pages are built differently from unsecured pages, but that requires a bit of re-structuring and new SOPs to be put in place. I guess my question is really about best practices when using https. How can I avoid duplication issues? When do I need to use rel=canonical? What is the best way to do things here to avoid heavy maintenance moving forward?
