I noticed another SEO builds backlinks (tons) on a social media profile that then has a link to his client's site. Another site he builds backlinks are a bitly account that 301's to the clients account.
Why would you do this?
Is it that you can build links indiscriminately to build a page up in PR to 3-4-5 PR, then pass that higher PR to your site (safe). Is that PR building method better than placing 100's of smaller PR links on your site?
It seems logical that if you passed in a tremendous amount of juice to juice a site up to PR4, you won't make your main site PR4 by JUST that link. You would need to build a lot of PR4 sites to make your site PR4. Why not just put all the backlinks on the main page instead of building up secondary social profiles etc...
Please reveal this secret. I know a lot of SEOs are using this method. Help

I do not have the website otherwise by looking at the trend I might have helped you better but the situation you told me is possible only when
- You competitor is very smart
- Your competitor is really dumb
I would build links to my social profile (Infect I have done that in the past) not because of the juice or link value or anything similar but i was more focused toward attract real and targeted users to my social media accounts from where I can build relationships that later can be used in multiple ways...and at the same time this activity opens more door for link opportunities.
I would love to build links for my Google+ profile as I am pretty much sure that author rank is going to help a lot in the future.
So, if your client have a long term strategy when it comes to social or inbound in general and have some really smart people doing SEO for them then he is using this activity to get more exposure in the targeted audience and he actually wants to invite people to calibrate and engage with him and his business through social media channels.
But what if he is dumb!
He might be thinking the same that Building links for a social media website like twitter and facebook and then adding a link of a website on social media profile give him more benefits as twitter and facebooks are authentic websites in the eye of Google.
If this is the thought... then this is not going to help achieving want he really want to achieve from this activity.

Link Building for a Newbie!
Hi Guys & Girls. Following my previous question, I seem to really be getting to grips with SEOmoz and all its features which seem fantastic. As mentioned before, I am quite new to this SEO game and learning all the time!! Through all my reading and learning over the last week I have learnt that Link Building is one of the most powerful ways of increasing your SEO game. I'm really trying to get my head around it all. I have come across things like "Link Farming" which seems to be a big no no in terms of Google. Submitting to Link directories etc etc. Now for somebody new, this all comes across quite confusing. Recommended Link Building Companies UK and Europe
