Site problem
-
I moved a site earlier on in the year to a better server www.keyrs.co.uk, my main keywords being equity release - equity release calculator and equity release schemes.
Since this happened the ranking have gone down and the schemes and calculator terms and have hit positions 7-8 when they were 2-3. basically my question is open to all, i am looking to see what the problem is with these pages as it is driving me nuts. All tools on SEO moz show the pages are doing well, however i must be missing something.

I notice the page speed of your equity site was 60/100, a super quick fix for this is Gzip compression in HT Access (if on linux, not so quick on Windows). A little more complex would be caching rules, both will have a great beneficial effect on page speed, and hopefully SERPs too.
Best of luck, just noticed your in Lancaster! just down the road from me in Chorley!

Hi Aran,
I have donee this on the main top 5, most of the results show us ahead I have mainly used the tools in SEO moz ?? but I totally agree with you that the preventitive approach is better, it kind of all happened at once and now just trying to restore everything.

Speeding the page load time will not do any harm, but for small drops in serps I generally look at carrying out a competitive analysis on the top 5 or top 10 competitors.
-
the equity release term was at number 2 and dropped to 3. It was the other 2 that dropped places quickly too 7-8. I was wondering if I had miissed something or if there was something obvious I was missing in regard to these pages, maybe a problem with links or on page factors?
-
Yeah it could just be coincidence and the drop would have happened anyway.

Hi Mike,
It appears your not on a shared IP, which is good (checked with http://www.axandra.com/free-online-seo-tool/shared-hosting-check.php).
Page Speed shows you could improve the overall speed fairly easily with Gzip or similar and some caching rules, which may be beneficial to the UX and SERPs.
I see your at 3rd position for "Equity release" today, not 7-8. Maybe the drop was a short term fluctuation?
I'd recommend doing some competitive analysis on the competition and identify what they are doing, this allows you to be preventitive with your seo.
Cheers

i thought the same but both servers are in the uk, it was shortly after. Our old server was getting slow and site was having issues with speed. I have been doing all standard things, link building, social, updated content but it is having so little difference?
-
You kept the domain name and all the page URL's the same right?
When you say a "better" server, is it hosted in the UK, and is it a shared server? These things can make a bit of a difference.
Did the rankings drop very soon after the change?

Duplicate content problem
Hi there, I have a couple of related questions about the crawl report finding duplicate content: We have a number of pages that feature mostly media - just a picture or just a slideshow - with very little text. These pages are rarely viewed and they are identified as duplicate content even though the pages are indeed unique to the user. Does anyone have an opinion about whether or not we'd be better off to just remove them since we do not have the time to add enough text at this point to make them unique to the bots? The other question is we have a redirect for any 404 on our site that follows the pattern immigroup.com/news/* - the redirect merely sends the user back to immigroup.com/news. However, Moz's crawl seems to be reading this as duplicate content as well. I'm not sure why that is, but is there anything we can do about this? These pages do not exist, they just come from someone typing in the wrong url or from someone clicking on a bad link. But we want the traffic - after all the users are landing on a page that has a lot of content. Any help would be great! Thanks very much! George

Site architecture & breadcrumbs
Hi A client hasn't structured site architecture in a silo type format so breadcrumbs are not predicating in a topical hierarchy as one would desire (or at least i think one would prefer) For example: say the site is called www.fruit.com and it has a category called 'types of fruit' and then sub/content pages called things like 'apples' and 'pears'. So in terms of architecture that should be: www.fruit.com/types-of-fruit/apples and www.fruit.com/types-of-fruit/pears etc etc The client has kept it all flat so instead architecture is: www.fruit.com/types-of-fruit and www.fruit.com/apples and www.fruit.com/pears As a result breadcrumbs follow suit and hence since also not employing logical predication dont reflect the topical & sub-topical hierarchy I have seen that some seo's at least used to think this was better for seo since kept the page/s nearer the root but surely its better to structure site architecture in a logical topical hierarchy so long as dont go beyond say 3 or 4 directories/forward slashes in the url's? Also is it theoretically possible to keep url structure as is (flat) and just edit/customise the breadcrumbs to reflect a topical hierarchy in a silo structure rather than change the entire site architecture & required 301'ing etc in order to do this (or is that misleading or just not possible?) Cheers Dan

Xenu Alternative for Large Sites
We're launching a new site and we're trying to crawl it to check for any problems. It's millions of pages and Xenu seems to start encountering errors as the numbers mount past 500,000. Does anyone know of an alternative, free or paid, that could handle the size better?
