Has anyone used a company to help promote their site

Hi, i receive around ten emails a day claiming they can help you get your site in the top ten in google, now i know most are a load of rubbish but i am just wondering if anyone has used any of these companies for a new site or an old site.
I am about to launch a new site after xmas and i am just wondering if any of these companies are worth looking at to help promote the new site instead of doing all the ground work myself.
Would love to know your thoughts

_Though email marketing is a legitimate way to reach out to potential customers, spamming inboxes of people in the sheer hope of getting them converted as customer is the height of stupidity. If you would ask my humble opinion, I would not care a fig of them. They are just another bunch of spammers and what I feel is that spammers are not doers. _

Diane, I would honestly spend the money hiring one of the many consultants posting on SEOmoz and around other prominent SEO circles.
When you are looking to hire, ask for past examples, full transparency in what they are doing and develop a list of goals.
I'm not sure what your budget is, but SEOmoz has a list of recommend companies. These would generally be on the upper end of the $ scale, but you may be able to afford that.
Also - learn the basics of SEO yourself. You'll get a better understanding of what you need to do for your site and if consultants/companies are ripping you off.

I would shy away from all of this. Typically they are more of the black hat type companies who are trying to get a ton of clients at low cost and claim to get you results. When in fact they will do more damage than good.
If you are looking to get SEO help, I would suggest either looking on here for an SEO to ask if they could take a look or check out the link SEO 5 links to.

My recommendation would be to do your due diligence. I would suggest asking for case studies, references and testimonials from existing clients.

Who is correct - please help!
I have a website with a lot of product pages - often thousands of pages. As each of these pages is for a specific lease car they are often only fractionally different from other pages. The urls are too long, the H1 is often too long and the Title is often too long for "SEO best practice". And they do create duplication issues according to MOZ. Some people tell me to change them to noindex/nofollow whilst others tell me to leave them as they are as best not to hide from google crawler. Any advice will be gratefully received. Unnatural links from your site
Hi, 24 February got this penalty message in Google webmaster tool. Google detected a pattern of unnatural, artificial, deceptive, or manipulative outbound links on pages on this site. This may be the result of selling links that pass PageRank or participating in link schemes. Already removed all the link on the blog and sent reconsideration request to Google spam team. But request is rejected. Please help me on this or share link with me on same case. Thanks,

Redirecting a old aged site to a new exact match site?
Hi All, I have a question. I have 2 sites with me in the same sector and want some help. site 1 is a old site started back in 2003 and has some amount of links to it and has a pr 3 with some good links to it but doesn't rank much for any keywords for the timing. site 2 is a aged domain but newly developed with unique content and has a good amount of exact match with a .com version. so will there be any benefit by redirecting site 1 to site 2 to get the seo benefits and a start for link bulding? or is it best to develop and work on each site? the sector is health insurance. My site has vanished from google
Hi my site has vanished from google. Using a third party server to host site elements
Hi guys - I have a client who are recently experiencing a great deal of more traffic to their site. As a result, their web development agency have given them a server upgrade to cope with the new demand. One thing they have also done is put all website scripts, CSS files, images, downloadable content (such as PDFs) - onto a 3rd party server (Amazon S3). Apparently this was done so that my clients server just handles the page requests now - and all other elements are then grabbed from the Amazon s3 server. So basically, this means any HTML content and web pages are still hosted through my clients domain - but all other content is accessible through an Amazon s3 server URL. I'm wondering what SEO implications this will have for my clients domain? While all pages and HTML content is still accessible thorugh their domain name, each page is of course now making many server calls to the Amazon s3 server through external URLs (s3.amazonaws.com). I imagine this will mean any elements sitting on the Amazon S3 server can no longer contribute value to the clients SEO profile - because that actual content is not physically part of their domain anymore. However what I am more concerned about is whether all of these external server calls are going to have a negative effect on the web pages value overall. Should I be advising my client to ensure all site elements are hosted on their own server, and therefore all elements are accessible through their domain? Hope this makes sense (I'm not the best at explaining things!)
