Pagerank 0 vs Page Authority 53....?
-
I sometimes see sites with PageRank 0 but Page Authority 50+.
For instance http://auto.beginthier.nl/:
PageAuthority = 53
mozRank = 4,64
mozTrust = 5,69
Root domain links = 42
PageRank = 0How should i interpret these stats? If or instance i'm optimizing for a car related website (a site about: car parts, car insurrance, classic cars), would these be a good place or a bad place to get links from (ignoring the benefits of direct traffic)?
PA = 53 (very good) Vs. PR = 0 (very bad)?

Hi Lawrence,
Your research is quite interesting. It sounds like there's benefit from adding links to this type of directory in the Netherlands regardless of the SEO benefit - if the Dutch are using these types of sites as their start pages, then you may actually gain a fair amount of traffic.
Although we have a few banklinks from Dutch directory pages, I cannot say that this was part of any strategy similar to yours. I'd be really interested to know if it works for you, and also whether you get a fair bit of traffic from them.
Please post a blog or something about it in a few months - it would be very much appreciated!
Matt

Hi Matt thanks for you reaction,
I'd normally never go after directory links for an international site, but i think in the Netherlands there is something 'special' going on here. People in Holland seem to use these directories as there 'homepage'. They are called startpagina's with www.startpagina.nl being the most authoritive one. It seems like Google values these links like any other natural link.
I'm making these conclusions after looking closely at other big players in the niche im working in.
When researching http://www.independer.nl/ http://www.easyswitch.nl/ and http://gaslicht.nl/ in open site explorer the highest rated links seem to come from these type of directories/startpagina's. They get links from subdomain directories/startpagina's that are closely related to the keywords they are trying to rank for and often have exact match anchor texts.
When i saw this i thought i could easily replicate these link profiles over time, but would only take over links from pages with good stats: PA 45+ and PR 2+.
This is how i bumped into http://auto.beginthier.nl/ with PR 0 and PA 53. Btw this site was created in 2002 according to archive.org. So its not a new page. Maybe it's the architecture as you suggested then coz the homepage has Pr 2 and the rest 0 http://www.beginthier.nl/.

Hi Lawrence,
It's hard to tell why that page only has a pagerank of 0. If you do some relevant searches in Google, do you see the page appearing in SERPs? Having a PR of 0 doesn't necessarily mean it's not worth getting a link from them - the page could be new, they could have poor architecture, etc.
I would suggest that more important factors from linkbuilding include: contextually relevant webpages, non-spammy anchor text*, and not going over board with loads of similar looking links.
*If you're on a linkbuilding mission across these directory pages, try not to link to the same page with the same anchor text over and over again. Google will spot this and will either give you a slap on the wrist, or just not pass any link juice to your website from the links - either way, it's pointless.
If you're in doubt, it is MUCH better to get only a couple of really valuable links from high authority websites, then it is to get hundreds of links from low value websites.
Best,
Matt

Puzzled by high ranking page (#2 in SERPs) with zero/low page or domain authority
So, I get the smoothie that is page authority and domain authority and the link metrics that Moz uses to predict how well a page will rank for a certain keyword. I can look at a specific search term where we are on say, page 2 or 3, with a page authority of 1 and domain authority of 26, I get why competitors rank above us. But then I look at a keyword that is much more competitive, where we rank #2, which is awesome, where the landing page is also showing a page authority of 1, and domain authority of 26. How can we rank higher than competitors with a page authority of 56 and domain authority of 65? Their onpage optimization for the keyword is no worse, and sometimes better that ours but we maintain this ranking. By the way the competition also have hundreds if not thousands more linking root domains than our page. Any ideas why one keyword is a rockstar and one is a dud, with the same poor PA and DA?

Why is my domain authority so low?
Hello, a couple of years ago I started publishing on my site more than 10 posts a day of content that no one else had. For this reason, my competitors started paraphrasing my content without giving proper attribution, and they ranked better in Google. That's why I realized that apart from creating content I had to work on my SEO, so I started to get some backlinks, most of them via contests on blogs. I am getting about 1 high quality link from PR2, PR3 or PR4 blogs each week. According to Open Site Explorer, I have 20 root domain links (200 total links). In reality I have more backlinks but they don't show up (they do show up in Ahrefs, about 50 root domains). To my surprise, I only have 15 Domain Authority. This is the most evident example, take a look at this screenshot: http://imgur.com/dFk2rkx My website is on the far left, two of my competitors on the right. As you can see I win every category except total links and the most important, domain authority. Are total links that important for Domain authority, even if 99% are internal? By the way, I also have more posts than these guys, I don't know why the report says otherwise. Why is the site on the right ranking so high? The same thing happens with the rest of my competitors, they have a lot of low quality links from "lists of domain sites" and in general a lot of very spammy links. According to what I have been reading, my good quality links should be more helpful than my competitors' spammy links, which should in fact affect them. So what is going on? I have no idea if I'm doing things right. Why is my domain authority so low? Thanks for your help. dFk2rkx

#1 with grade F page optimization
For a specific keyword we rank #1 in Google. Nevertheless, I got a Grade F on SEOMoz regarding page optimization. All comments were certainly true. On another keyword (keyword 2) we got a grade A, on this keyword we rank #3. Strange enough I did linkbuilding on keyword 2 to the page regarding this keyword. I did not do linkbuilding for the first keyword. How can this be explained? Both keywords have average competition.

Build links to home page or internal to rank internal pages?
I understand that naturally people link to the home page and internal pages - probably the home page more often than not. In order to build a natural looking link profile I also understand that I need a variety of anchor text, brand and url links. Should I be building links mainly to the home page with only a few to internal pages? Ultimately I want my internal pages to rank for specific terms so in my head it makes sense to concentrate my link building effort to internal pages but that would seem unnatural to google I'm sure. For arguments sake if I only built links to the home page with a mix of the anchor texts described above would these internal pages rank eventually anyway as 'link juice' flows throughout the site? Or is it an absolute must to build some links to internal pages. Could a page rank for a keyword without having any links to the site with the keyword anchor text (simply url links) based on the page title/content? Also what is a good ratio of home page to internal links? I would assume around 10:1? A lot of questions I know but I'm confused as to what will be the best strategy.

Total Links vs Google Webmaster Site Links
I am interested why the numbers between SEOmoz and Google are so different. In SEOmoz we only show 17,000ish links from 190ish domains. In Google, we show 200,000+ links from 370 domains. Why is there such a dramatic difference?

2 links going to same domain but different pages
Hi, How is the link juice distributed when you have 2 links in the same article but they go to different pages on the same domain? I know some say if 2 links go to the same page in an article then only the first link passes juice. Would it be better to have 2 articles each having 1 link or 2 articles each having 2 links?
