Importance of an optimized home page (index)
-
I'm helping a client redesign their website and they want to have a home page that's primarily graphics and/or flash (or jquery). If they are able to optimize all of their key sub-pages, what is the harm in terms of SEO?
-
No, that's not correct. Think about the way link juice flows as well. Remember that it is the professionals who say neither of these practices are good. If you want a good strong SEO position, you need to avoid these practices.

Just from my own sites...
Most profitable can be one of three things....
A) Highest sales volume
B) Best profit margin
C) Items that are easy to obtain, inventory and deliver (low labor)
If I had a client, I would talk to her and ask what she can sell a lot of and what she enjoys moving.
Where you can get SERP position based upon competition levels is also a part of this.
-
If I'm hearing you correctly, you are saying that while not recommended, it's possible to have a good SEO program for deep pages, while not optimizing the home page. Is that accurate?
-
Thank you Egol. How do you determine which keywords are most profitable? Is it something that the client figures out overtime, or is there a way to determine "profitability" before the SEO process begins?
-
As EGOl and iNet state, using flash for a homepage isn't a great idea.
You will need links outside of the flash to ensure crawlers find deeper pages.
If you do optimise sub level pages over the homepage, then fancy homepage flash become inert as most visitors are going to land on sub pages, by passing the homepage.
Include Flash by all means, but make it a page element, not the entire page.
Jquery on the other hand is awesome and if done correctly will not hinder your SEO.

Google will tell you not to have sites that are image heavy or that have content buried so that they cannot easily crawl / read it.
Steer well clear of both of these possibilities as neither will benefit your customer. Also remember that Google also uses page load speed as a metric as well.
Regards,
Andy

For many sites the homepage brings in more traffic than any other page. Also the homepage is usually the strongest page on a site and that gives it the ability to attack the most difficult (and often most profitable) keywords. Not using the homepage would be like not using your best sword.
Maybe there is a way that you can include flash elements on the page and still have space left for optimized text?
Or, better, have a homepage that has a number of enticing links that will pull the visitor deeper into the site and engage them with more information.

Home Page Not Ranking... Need an EXPERT
Hi, for about a year now, our home page seems to have been "removed" from Google (except for our branded keywords). The home page is clearly indexed, but none of the keywords for the home page rank in the top 500 (again, except for our brand, trophycentral). Other pages in the site are fine and we rank in the top 10 positions for hundreds of keywords. We are also okay on Yahoo and Bing. So the issue is the home page from non-branded words. There have been no manual penalties, but since the words, such as trophies and trophies and awards are all but gone, something is going on. It has been almost exactly a year now and I have tried everything from removing backlinks (although I still can't tell which are "bad links", to changing titles, to improving speed and structure. I have had quite a few really nice people try to help, but their suggestions don't seem to work or are too vague. I really need an expert as the impact to the business of not having a home page performing is very damaging. Thank you!!!

Yahoo and Bing do not index all pages
Only 20% of our pages are indexed by Bing and Yahoo although we have correctly submitted the sitemap to bing webmaster tools and other search engines index all our content. Do you have any suggestions?

Paginated Home Page Duplicates on Wordpress Sites
A number of my websites created on WP are displaying duplicate home pages with these types of urls. http://www.example.com/page/10/ http://www.example.com/page/11/ http://www.example.com/page/12/ I found these duplicates using the site:search command. Basically, put in any number and the Home Page opens. With the above mentioned url structure. Any idea on why they are created, how they can be stopped and what kind of an impact they would have in terms of SEO and the penalty that comes with duplicate content.

So instead of adding "noindex, follow" tag i have changed the url in my search result page like this: Original
http://www.mysite.com/kb-search.aspx?=travelguide&type=wiki&s=3 To
http://www.mysite.com/travelguide/attraction-guide.html And the search result page contains the title of the articles, a short descriptions (300 chars.) and a link to the articles. Does it help? Or should i add noindex, follow tag? Helps Please?0 -

HTTPS attaching to home page
Hi!! Okay - weird tech question. Domain is http://hiphound.com. I have SSL attaching to checkout and my account pages. Tested and works well. Issue - I am able to reach the home page at https://hiphound.com AND http://hiphound.com. If I access the home page via HTTPS and click on a link (any link) then the site is redirected to HTTP again which is good. My concern is the home page displaying via HTTPS and HTTP. Is this is an issue that can be resolved or is it expected behavior I have to live with.? I am being told by DEV there is nothing they can do about it but want to understand why and if they are correct. Thoughts? Thank you!! Lynn
