Redirecting root domains to sub domains
-
Mozzers:
We have a instance where a client is looking to 301 a www.example.com to www.example.com/shop
I know of several issues with this but wondered if anyone could chip in with any previous experiences of doing so, and what outcomes positive and negative came out of this.
Issues I'm aware of:
- The root domain URL is the most linked page, a HTTP 301 redirect only passes about 90% of the value. you'll loose 10-15% of your link value of these links.
- navigational queries (i.e.: the "domain part" of "domain.tld") are less likely to produce google site-links
- less deep-crawling: google crawls top down - starts with the most linked page, which will most likely be your domain url. as this does not exist you waste this zero level of crawling depth.
- robots.txt is only allowed on the root of the domain.
Your help as always is greatly appreciated.

Thank you Daniel & Steve for your comments. This is pretty much the line we have taken on this, always nice to get back up on something that is new to us. Great answers and greatly appreciated Best Regards Sean

I totally agree with Daniel, it would be a huge mistake!
Don;t forget that all of those links that are coming in currently, whether natural or built will have some relevance from sites/pages with anchor text relevant to that homepage. You won't just be losing a bit of link juice, you'll be losing what the search engines currently see as recommendations of trust and relevance from one page to another with that other being altered to a different page with whole different content (in the fact that it's a shop)... so the keywords and relevancy "bonuses" you did have on the homepage from all those links will no longer match up.... if that makes sense.
i.e. link from page about bananas, to page about bananas, with anchor text of bananas.
If you change the homepage it will become:
link from page about bananas, to page about apples, with anchor text of bananas.
That's an extreme and simplified example but you get what I'm saying

Never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever redirect your home page. You've listed enough reasons already without even needing to add anymore. This is just a bad idea. It's one thing if your specific platform makes your homepage something other than the root domain and that's how it has always been. If you have had a home page at your root domain and now want to redirect it, bad idea. Just put the content of example.com/shop at example.com. Pretty easy fix.

Domain forwarding or redirects for SEO?
Hi all! A client of mine owns several top level domains which are not in use, let's call them example.nu, example.de, example.net and so on. The current website is example.com.
Technical SEO | | JHultqvist
When checking the technical status of the unused domains I realized that all but one are forwarded (via DNS) to example.com and only one has a 301 redirect. Should I redirect all of them by means of 301 or let them stay forwarded? Very few of the domains have any other sites linking to them. Any thoughts would be really appreciated! Jesper0 -
General Question: Linking Root Domains 0
Hi, we have several subpages with PA 1. We try to figure out why. The link metrics show 0 Linking root domains, but shouldnt there be at least the own domain like 1 linking root domain or are we getting it already wrong here? The subpages have following link metrics: 0 External followed Links. 8416 subdomain and 8421 Root Domain, Linking Root Domains 0, 299 Subdomain, 302 Root Domain (From Mozbar). The pages seem to be crawled. We are suspecting techincal reasons. What would be the impact of the linking root domain to the PA 1? Thank you in advance

Slug redirect
Hi All, I'm facing a small yet big problem on one of my sites that I'll try to explain: I have a site with thousands of URL's, all with an odd link structure, like index.php/modules?=name=Video , etc I want to build a proper link structure and for that I'll have to replace that links. My question is: 1. Will I have any relevant SEO problem to do 301 redirects from the old links to the new?

2. Should I do it all at the same time or do it by parts?
3. What options do I have to avoid give not found errors / redirects for the old links? Thanks for the help.0 -
Moving a blog from unique domain to root /blog/ but on 2 different servers? HELP!
I have a main site hosted on one server, I have the blog hosted on another server - BOTH of which my team has FULL control over. I ultimately want the blog to reside on the root domain: www.mysite.com/blog/ My network team is saying "DNS will not allow this to happen, the resolution will ultimately have to be on blog.website.com" Has anyone out there done this? Is it even possible? HELP!

Can I do a redirect to a new domain name only a couple of weeks after having redirected to another domain?
I have a client with two website with very similar content. Both had a lot of inbound links and performed fairly well in SERPS. We recently combined both sites and have redirected one of the domains to the other. The traffic dipped slightly initially, but is recovering nicely. Now the client registered a new domain name he would like to use for the site. Should I wait a few weeks for everything to settle down after the first redirect/consolidation of sites before doing a new redirect to a new domain name, or should I not worry about having any issues with doing it right away?

Should rel canonical tags include the root domain
It does sound like a silly question but bear with me a little... I recently installed on my Joomla website a module that automatically creates rel canonical tags for pages that contain lists that can be sorted by different criteria: (price, alphabetic order, etc...) I know that a proper canonical tag should look like this: However, the module I'm using creates the following structure Will this work? I mean, will it be "understood" by the bots? To see what the module actually does, you can visit the following link http://www.quipeutlefaire.fr/fr/index.php?sort=price&sort_direction=desc&limit=10&limitstart=0&option=com_auctions&category=240 In the source code you will see that the canonical tag is Which is the original "unsorted" page. Thanks in advance for your help
