Hunting the White Whales?

I'm not a SEO, just a small business owner with the will to succeed. When it comes to the Big Links from real sites, (Technorati, Tech Crunch, Slash Dot, ect.) where do you start? How do you begin the process of getting a good article on a great site?
-
There is several ways to obtain links from the big sites, but as you might understand, the less cost involved the more competition you are facing.
Running good PR effort, might get you the attention (and links) from these big sites. Try not to promote your product as much as providing something that has significant news value related to the site you would like to get featured on. It might be a story of how you are helping in the solving of a problem users are facing, it might be funding news - ask yourself what the users of the big site would LIKE to read, and not what YOU would like them to read. Typical mistake in PR campaigns, is focusing on features instead of benefits.
Adding social bookmarking to your website, might help as well, but again ask your self what the USERS would like to share, and not what YOU want the users to share. In the past, providing valuable easy-to-digest content like infographics was the way to go.

White hat techniques for difficult niches
Hi all. We've been approached by a client in the online gambling sector about white hat link building. Much of our focus is on guest blogging, but most sites have a no gambling policy. I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas for link building ethically for tricky niches.

Could someone show me an example of a service site that is using 100% content generation/brand building tactics in a boring niche? such as plumbing/electrical/movers, etc. All I see are paid nav/footer links, profile spam, directory submissions etc ranking in every niche. I'm looking for a specific example. Any site will do.

What white hat article marketing tactics do you use?
It seems there's a lot of negative connotations with the phrase "Article Marketing" as it's associated with spam, spinning, etc. I couldn't find anything other than that, which begs to ask, what are the white hat tactics that you use after you publish your article? What tools do you use to streamline the process? Social Bookmarking? RSS? Any methods you use to score quick backlinks? How do you get your content in front of bloggers?

Link building strategy - black hat or white hat?
I have a competitor who always ranks very on alot keywords relevant to our business and using Open Site Explorer I note they have a tremendous amount of links. I also noticed that it appears their web company has gone out and set up numerous websites with relevant content, and then have linked back to the competitors main site. Is this kosher? I ask because before I settled on my current domain name, I purchased several keyword rich domain names; should I be thinking of setting up websites with relevant (and original) content and link back to my main site?
