Why would a site with virtually no external links and low authority rank very high?
-
Hey there:
I'm not sure anyone's going to be game to answer this but...
I have designed, done on-page optimization for and done ongoing content marketing and linkbuilding for a local fitness site. The site is about nine months old and I am attempting to achieve rank for the keyword "personal trainers in philadelphia." We've made progress; having taken a new site from +100 to 19 in about four or five months worth of content creation and linkbuilding on a very modest budget. I'm not complaining.
What has me confused though is that there are one or two sites that are ranking very high for this keyword string with considerably shoddier metrics than our site and I'm wondering how a stock WP theme site with very few inbound links can rank top five for a reasonably competitive keyword?
Our site is http://vtrainersinc.com. The site I've noticed that ranks top five and seems to have an inferior SEOMoz profile is bodycrafters.net. Anybody got any ideas as to why these things seem to occur? I have this feeling this site has stumbled upon a magic SEO elixir which I'd like to get my hands on!

Thanks, Matt and William, for taking a look and offering input. I'm going to give William's tweak a go and see if I get a bump. I'm suspicious that any of 1 -3 apply here, Matt, as the domain is not that old and it's pretty content-deprived and static. (Even though it is built on WP, it's not being updated or blogged to...)
Thanks again,
dave

There are many "possible" reasons - hard to know which one is causing it.
-
Could be that they've done well in places that aren't showing up.
-
Could be that they 301'd an old domain with a lot of juice you aren't seeing to the new site.
-
Could be that you are connected to them in some way so you're more likely to see them on personalized results.
-
Could be that they're just doing something exceptionally right.
-
Could be temporary - a lot of sites like this come and go on page 1 these days. I track "seo melbourne" almost every day and the top 10 changes ridiculously often.
I could probably think of more "possible" reasons but I don't see a way to determine which it is. If they owned the former #1 site and rebranded, a simple 301 with almost no links would still outrank almost everyone else. If they update frequently, they could be getting some sort of freshness bonus.

I just did a quick review and would note the following.
Google search is now VERY precise. A search for "personal trainers in Philadelphia" (without quotes) returns the results you quoted.
But a search for "personal trainers in Philadelphia AND SOUTH JERSEY)" - which is the 1st text encountered in your main content containing your keyword phrase) - puts you in #1 position in SERP.
It is possible you are diluting your effectiveness by adding the south Jersey part.
I would try removing that and putting this phrase "personal trainers in Philadelphia" - period - in the 1st sentence of your main content and see if the results change.
Your competitor seems to have done that, and even without a strong link profile it is easy for Google to see clearly and unambiguously what their site is about.

Why would a newly created site, have ranked ahead of our site for keyword that we are optimized for?
This newly created site has a DA of 1 and PA of 1, no backlinks, no optimized urls, the keyword they ranked better than us on was listed a total of 6 times on the homepage. Our PA is 29 and DA is 18 for the page that ranks for this keyword. They really copied a few elements of our site but made sure to change a few things, but also list at the bottom of their site 5 keywords that are crucial to our niche industry but they're all linking to the same page. Any ideas? It's an SEO guy running the site, we've watched them toy with adwords trying to be number 1, but not liking the price, so they are here and there with it. Mainly I don't see why they'd rank better for this keyword, we our site have prolly 500% more content that's both of quality and relevance to our customers, in the form of Pdfs, infographics, help sections, and video. Very baffled here, any advice would rock!

Good moz rank and trust, terrible page and domain authority
I have this happening both for page and domain. For domain the rank and trust are 5.2 and 5.51 but domain authority is only 48. My competitors with trust and rank between 5.5 and 6 have their domain authority in the 70-80 range. The same happens for home page metrics and the metrics are about the same. What can cause this authority discrepancy?

How can I find the pages on my site with the highest page rank?
I have a lot pages on my site and I'm wondering if there is a tool out there that will find all the pages with the highest pagerank for me? Also, it would be helpful to find that on competitors sites as well. Any ideas?

How is this page ranking so high?
I have been using OSE, and I have come across a few sites that rank within the top 5 for VERY competitive keywords and seem to have NO inbound links to the page. Am I overlooking something? For example, Keyword: floor lamps Page: www.lampsplus.com/products/floor-lamps/

Link to landing page or home page
Ok, so I've been doing a bit of link research and found that most of our competitors use anchor text to link to their homepage on their site and not a specific landing page. Our current strategy is to link to the correct landing page depending on the anchor to get these to rank, as opposed to getting our homepage to rank for different keywords. If that makes sense. The main reason I can think of to send all links to the homepage is that it would increase the domain authority of the site as a whole. Instead of spreading the links to certain pages depending on the anchor text. It would also give your one page a greater chance to rank for all keywords? Quick example I am a site that sells sports clothes. I have 2 main pages from my homepage: Homepage Football Rugby _Should I link to the football page for all links anchored with "football", and all linked anchored with "rugby" to the rugby page OR should I anchor all links including "rugby" and "football" to the homepage? _ What do you think is the best strategy? Thanks in advance.

Are My Links Valuable?
I have been link building for a couple months now. I am having a hard time trying to figure out which sites are even worthy of getting links from. Obviously, those that are clearly link farming, or have lots of ads throughout their site are not valuable. I use OSE, but don't know what is a good P.A or D.A. and what it means when one is much higher than the other (and if that is a bad thing). I also use compete.com to give me a general idea of the unique visitors going into a site. Any tools I can use to help evaluate the strength of specific incoming links/ specific websites? Any ideas or thoughts would be helpful. Thanks So Much, Melissa
